Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which word fills in the blank from "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds"? "Picture yourself in a boat on the river with _______ trees and marmalade skies."

Answer: Tangerine

"Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" is one of the most famous songs ever performed by the Beatles. It gained notoriety from allegations the song was inspired by an LSD trip. However, John Lennon consistently denied this and stated he was inspired to write the song from a picture drawn by Julian Lennon, his son, and from "Alice in Wonderland".

The song also gave its name to Lucy, a female hominin skeleton discovered in Kenya, because it was playing at the time it was discovered.
2. What are the missing words from "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!"? "Over men and horses hoops and garters. Lastly through a hogshead of ____ ____."

Answer: Real fire

"Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!" was written primarily by John Lennon. Mr. Kite is believed to be inspired by William Kite, a British circus performer from the 19th century. The song itself was inspired from circus promotional posters from that era that Lennon had come across and purchased. The music for this song was meant to have a carnival or circus atmosphere to it.
3. What are the next two words from "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" the song? "We're Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Sit back and let the _____ _____."

Answer: Evening go

The titular song of the album was mostly written by Paul McCartney, although it is credited to John Lennon as well. It appears twice on the record, in two different versions, the second one significantly shorter and played faster than the first. Another memorable line from the song is "You're such a lovely audience, we'd like to take you home with us".
4. What is the missing word from these lyrics from 'Lovely Rita"? "Lovely Rita, meter ____."

Answer: Maid

An interesting fact is the term "meter maid" was more common in the United States than the UK at the time "Lovely Rita" was written; the term "meter warden" was used in the UK. Written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, some say the lyrics tell of an incident involving McCartney receiving a ticket outside the famous Abbey Road Studio.

In actuality, however, the lovely meter maid's name was Meta. The song also contains a piano solo by George Martin, who is called the "Fifth Beatle" by some.
5. What are the missing words from "A Day in the Life"? "Found my coat and _______ __ ___. Made the bus in seconds flat."

Answer: Grabbed my hat

These lines are from the closing track, "A Day in the Life", primarily authored by John Lennon with some lyrics by Paul McCartney. The initial segment with the line "He blew his mind out in a car" is said to reference the fatal car accident of Guinness heir Tara Browne, although Paul McCartney later clarified this as referring to drug use.
6. What are these missing words from "When I'm Sixty Four?" "Indicate precisely what you mean to say. Yours sincerely, ______ ____. Give me your answer, fill in a form."

Answer: Wasting away

The composition of "When I'm Sixty-Four" predates the "Sgt. Pepper" album by almost a decade, having been written by Paul McCartney around 1958. The song had been in the Beatles' repertoire for live concerts for a long time, particularly to be played when technical troubles such as a power outage required an unplugged segment. It finally found its permanent home on this album.
7. The first three lines of the song, "Good Morning, Good Morning" begin with the same word. What is it? "___ to do to save his life call his wife in. ___ to say but what a day how's your boy been? ___ to do it's up to you."

Answer: Nothing

Although the song is credited to Lennon-McCartney, some sources say that John Lennon wrote the song after watching a commercial for Kellogg's Corn Flakes, as well as listening to the Beach Boy's "Pet Sounds" (1966). Lennon requested that the animal noises be placed in a specific order, so that each animal was capable of eating the animal whose sound preceded it.
8. What are the missing lyrics from "With a Little Help from My Friends"? "Lend me your ears and I'll sing you a song. And I'll try ___ __ ___ ___ __ ___."

Answer: "not to sing out of key"

"With a Little Help from My Friends" was written as Ringo Starr's vocal solo for the album. It quickly became Starr's personal favorite and he keeps performing it as the closing act of his "All-Starr Band" concerts. Cover versions of the song - most famously the version done by Joe Cocker in 1968 - reached number one in the UK charts several times, vastly outperforming the 1978 single release of the original that failed to break into the top 40 both in the UK and in the United States.
9. What is the missing word from "Within You Without You"? "We were talking, about the space between us ___."

Answer: All

"Within You Without You" was written by George Harrison who was influenced by his then-recent trip to India. The other Beatles did not perform on the song; instead, Harrison, along with members of the Asian Music Circle, were featured. It was Harrison's only submitted work for "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band".
10. What is the next line from "Fixing a Hole"? "I'm fixing a hole where the rain gets in. And _____ __ ___ ___ ______."

Answer: "stops my mind from wandering"

As always, the song is credited to Lennon/McCartney, but this one is all Paul. It appears as the fifth track on the first side, and was one of the songs that mystified younger listeners who didn't recognise the detached perspective produced by the use of drugs such as marijuana, which was later acknowledged as influencing the author as he wrote. It also includes a dig at the fans who crowded the Beatles wherever they went, making life stressful:

"Silly people run around they worry me
And never ask me why they don't get past my door."
