Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Fierce, dark werewolf

Answer: Gmork

Gmork is the incarnation of evil and the herald of the Nothing in the story. He intends to chase down Atreyu before the young warrior can succeed in the task of bringing a child from the outside world to give the Empress the new name she needs. His confrontation with Atreyu in the deserted Spook City is one of the tensest moments of the film.
2. Brave Plains People warrior

Answer: Atreyu

Atreyu, referenced as a Greenskin in the book, is a young warrior resembling a native American in appearance and culture. In the movie, the green makeup never worked out, so he was portrayed with the natural skin color of actor Noah Hathaway who has some Mohawk heritage.
3. Ancient turtle - or a tortoise?

Answer: Morla

Morla, The Ancient One, is depicted as a mountain-sized turtle or tortoise (it is never really seen which and the German original description of "Schildkröte" could mean either). Presumably having lived through many incarnations of Fantasia, Morla is incredibly wise and allergic to youth, a fact that caused Atreyu to be sent flying more than once in the film.
4. Luckdragon

Answer: Falkor

Unlike their classic fantasy brethren, luckdragons have no wings and are covered in a mixture of pearly white scales and fur. They fly by sheer magic and are an incarnation of the light. Falkor saved Atreyu from certain death twice, once in the Swamps of Sadness and then again, later in Spook City.
5. Gnomish scientist

Answer: Engywook

Living near the Southern Oracle with his wife Urgl, Engywook has been studying the Oracle for all his life, even though he has never actually passed the three Sphinx gates (only two were seen in the movie) and talked to the Oracle himself, relying only on the accounts of returned travelers and his observation of would-be Oracle visitors at the first gate - quite often the end of their journey.
6. Faithful and intelligent horse

Answer: Artax

Artax is depicted as a white horse, faithful, courageous and intelligent. He carries Atreyu throughout the reaches of Fantasia until the Swamps of Sadness, where he succumbs to the intense draw of gloom and drowns, forgoing the resistance that could save him from sinking in a feeling of listlessness.

The horse who played Artax in the film was presented to actor Noah Hathaway as a gift at the end of the production.
7. Rider of a sleepy bat

Answer: Nighthob

The Nighthob has never been given a proper name other than that, but is always referred to by the definite article, implying uniqueness. He is one of the three original messengers who met on their way to the Ivory Tower to report to the Empress of the impending or already occurred demise of their countries, but when they arrive, they find that they have no news to bring - others, from all corners of Fantasia, have already delivered the same news.
8. Imperial servant and herald, keeper of Auryn

Answer: Cairon

Cairon is referred to as a centaur in the book as well as in the film's production documents, even though, in the movie, he does not appear with the horse body that is typical of the race but rather with an imposing, tall humanoid figure and a robe that is very similar to the appearance of a Jedi Master from the "Star Wars" movies.
9. Human boy, from the outside world

Answer: Bastian Balthazar Bux

For Fantasia to be saved from oblivion, children from the outside world have to come and visit the country, claiming it as their own by giving the Childlike Empress a new name and then shaping the world with their wishes. The danger of visiting Fantasia is that, in creating one's own ideal world, one forgets who one originally was - a fate that nearly befell Bastian in the novel and in the second movie.

The first film only covered the first half of the book and just ended with a voice-over telling that Bastian lived through many adventures before returning home, closing with the story's trademark phrase "but that is another story and shall be told another time".
10. The Childlike Empress, renamed

Answer: Moon Child

When Bastian finally managed to summon the courage to accept his role as the designated savior of Fantasia, he decided on the name "Moon Child" ("Mondenkind" in German) for the Empress, yelling it out into the night and storm and causing himself to be transported to Fantasia. If you ask me, the German three syllable name just works much better in this key scene than the two syllables of the English language version.
