Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Colston Hall is a concert venue in which of these British cities?

Answer: Bristol

Colston Hall first opened for concerts in 1867, but fire destroyed the buildings in both 1898 and 1945. The modern building dates from 1951, and has seating for over 2000 people. It is one of the major venues in the southwest of England with most major artists, including The Beatles, Buddy Holly and Robbie Williams, including it on their tours. It also hosts classical music concerts.
2. Count Vronsky and Prince Stepan Oblonsky are characters in which novel?

Answer: Anna Karenina

'Anna Karenina' was written by Leo Tolstoy and published as a novel in 1878. It tells the story of the title character and her affair with Count Vronsky, which ends in tragedy. The character of Oblonsky is her brother. All the novels listed are by Russian authors - 'Doctor Zhivago' was written by Boris Pasternak, 'Lolita' by Vladimir Nabokov and 'Crime and Punishment' by Fyodov Dostoyevsky.
3. 'Elephunk' and 'The E.N.D.' are albums by which band?

Answer: Black Eyed Peas

The Black Eyed Peas are will.i.am, apl.de.ap, Taboo and Fergie. 'Elephunk' came out in 2003 and included the hit single 'Where Is the Love?' with Justin Timberlake contributing vocals. The single reached number eight on the US Billboard Hot 100 and was a number one on the UK Singles chart. 'The E.N.D.' gave the band number one hits in both the USA and UK with 'Boom Boom Pow' and 'I Gotta Feeling' in 2009.
4. A Gloucester Old Spot is a breed of which farm animal?

Answer: Pig

The breed is classed as white with (you guessed) black spots, and the breed website recommends it as being one of the best meats to eat. It was one of the earliest breeds to be officially recorded for pedigree purposes, with the Gloucester Old Spot Breed Society being established in 1913.

In the 1920s, it was one of the most popular pigs in the UK, but the population has declined since and it is now classed as a rare breed.
5. Michael McIntyre, Reginald D. Hunter and Dara O Briain all made their name primarily in which area of entertainment?

Answer: Comedy

The English Michael McIntyre, the Irish Dara O Briain and American Reginald D. Hunter are all well known stand up comedians and regulars on various television comedy panel shows. All have appeared on the long running 'Have I Got News For You', either as host or panellists, and have appeared on shows such as 'Mock the Week'. McIntyre was said to be the world's biggest earning comedian in 2012.
6. A Bakewell tart is flavoured with which nut?

Answer: Almond

The tart is named after the town of Bakewell in Derbyshire, and is believed to have originated in the 1860s. It is made with a shortcrust pastry base, covered with jam then an almond flavoured sponge mixture topping, sprinkled with flaked almonds before being baked.
7. The Eiger is a mountain in which of these countries?

Answer: Switzerland

The Eiger is situated in the Bernese Alps, and is one of three mountains forming a ridge - the others being the Monch and Jungfrau. They overlook the town of Interlaken. The Eiger is one of the most challenging mountains to climb with the first ascent made in 1858. Its north face was not conquered until 1938 and has claimed many lives in the years since.
8. Krishna Pandit Bhanji is the real name of which British born actor?

Answer: Ben Kingsley

Ben Kingsley was born in Yorkshire in 1943 to a British mother and a father of Indian descent. His father had moved to the UK at the age of fourteen from Zanzibar. Having begun his acting career on the stage, Kingsley adopted his new name in the 1970s before moving into films. Among his best known film roles are the title role in 'Gandhi' (1982), 'Schindler's List' (1993) and 'Sexy Beast' (2000). Kingsley received a knighthood in 2002.
9. Although he was born in Argentina, Sergio Parisse has played international rugby union for which country?

Answer: Italy

Parisse's father worked for the Italian national airline, Alitalia, and was based in Argentina, where Sergio was born in 1983. He began his rugby career in Argentina before moving to Italy to play for Treviso. Parisse then moved to France in 2005 to play for Stade Francais.

He played his first international in 2002 against New Zealand, and became captain of the Italian team in 2011. Parisse was considered one of the best players in his position, number eight, in the early years of the twenty-first century.
10. The second son of the monarch traditionally becomes the duke of which English city?

Answer: York

The oldest son of the monarch is designated as the Prince of Wales, with various other subsidiary titles. The title of Duke of York has been given to the second son since the fifteenth century, and was granted to Prince Andrew, the younger brother of Prince Charles, in 1986.

The title of Duke of Lancaster was last held by Henry of Bolingbroke, who went on to become King Henry IV and amalgamated the title with the monarchy. Dukes of Gloucester are usually younger sons of monarchs, although Prince Richard, who inherited the title from his father, is cousin to Queen Elizabeth II.

The title of Duke of Windsor was created in 1937 for the former King Edward VIII following his abdication.
