Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When Thomas Edison died in 1931, his friend Henry Ford was at his side. Mr. Ford took something from his friend as he died. Do you know what it was?

Answer: His dying breath

Henry Ford trapped his friend's dying breath in a bottle. When Mr. Ford died in 1947, the bottle was found among his possessions.
2. Copper, zinc, and nickel comprise which metal when mixed?

Answer: German silver

Amazingly, German silver contains no silver whatsoever.
3. U.S. Patent #90,218 was granted in 1869 for this invention.

Answer: Stove plate

Patent #0090218 is for a "Stove Plate". Patented by R. Bailey on May 16, 1869.
4. The Bank of Vernal is the only bank in the world that can make this claim.

Answer: Bricks to construct it were sent through the mail

Construction began in 1919, with bricks mailed seven per package from Salt Lake City. It was cheaper to mail the bricks, than to ship them commercially.
5. The fastest wind ever recorded gusted to 318 mph. Where was this wind recorded?

Answer: Moore, Oklahoma

On May 3, 1999, gusts reached 318 mph. This record still stands today.
6. An incumbent U.S President has never been tried, convicted, or jailed. However, two have been arrested. Can you guess who they were?

Answer: Franklin Pierce & Ulysses S. Grant

Franklin Pierce was arrested for running down Mrs. Nathan Lewis in his horse and buggy. She suffered minor injuries. As the President was arrested, he simply declared, "I am Mr. Pierce". He was released. Ulysses S. Grant was arrested for speeding during his first term in office by Constable William H. West. West grabbed the Presidents horse's bridle as it galloped down the street. Upon recognizing the President, West apologized. Grant told West, "Officer, do your duty".
7. The duckbilled platypus is an amazing creature. Which of these traits is not exhibited by this animal?

Answer: They hunt birds

The duckbilled platypus births its young by laying eggs. They secrete milk for their young from slits located near the mammary glands. They growl like dogs. They also have spurs behind the rear ankles. These spurs contain poison, similar to a snake.
8. Spiny lobsters are easy to harvest in the waters of New Caledonia, using this method.

Answer: Dead octopuses on a pole

When a small octopus is lowered into a watery bed of spiny lobsters, they freeze in terror. The crustaceans can then be picked up, with not so much as a pinch.
9. In Lake Wales, Florida, a street exists named 'Spook Hill'. Can you guess what is special about this particular avenue?

Answer: It defies the law of gravity

If you put a ball on Spook Hill, it will roll upwards. And be careful parking your car, because if you forget to set the emergency brake, it will slowly make its way to the top. It is an optical illusion, of course, yet the City Manager of Lake Wales will never tell what engineers have discovered about this strange hill.
10. Can you guess which American automobile had the worst track record for durability, and performance?

Answer: Ford Edsel

When Ford introduced the Edsel in 1958, it made its mark as the all-time worst auto. Only 109,466 of these autos were sold from 1958 to 1960. 2,864 Edsels were built in 1960, yet any one of these cars are very collectable. In 1958, only 1/2 of the vehicles performed properly. Rear axle problems, power steering pumps were faulty, the heaters operated even when it was turned off. Edsel Owners of America may beg to differ about the quality of these cars. Based in West Liberty, Illinois, this group has over 1,600 members.

They meet annually to swap parts and information.
