Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following items are currently displayed at the Smithsonian Institution?

Answer: A silk purse made from a sow's ear

Arthur D. Little manufactured a purse using sow's ears. He boiled thousands of sows ears into somewhat of a liquid base. He then used his knowledge in synthetics to spin and dry the milky substance, producing a very long string of synthetic silk. This silk was woven into a purse, in opposition to the old Shakespearean adage that theorized it was impossible.
2. Which one of the following was officially listed in the National Register of Historic Places?

Answer: A chicken coop

A ceremony was held in Georgetown, Delaware, in the fall of 1974, commemorating the registration of a chicken coop constructed by Mrs. Wilmer Steele in 1923. This coop has been completely restored to its original condition by the Delmarva Poultry Industry Association.
3. Former U.S President Millard Fillmore uttered four words before he died. What were they?

Answer: "The nourishment is palatable."

Millard Fillmore died in Buffalo, New York, March 8, 1874, at his home. The attending physician was feeding him a spoonful of broth when he died.
4. The secret formula for 'Coca-Cola' is still very heavily guarded. In its early years, this product contained cocaine. It contains caffeine these days. Yet during WWII, caffeine was in short supply. What was the new 'ingredient' that may have been introduced, if it hadn't been rejected by top executives?

Answer: Extract of bat guano

In 1916, 'Coca-Cola' tried to eliminate the use of the coca leaf from its product. The Supreme Court ruled that trace amounts of the coca leaf must be used, or they could no longer keep the 'Coca-Cola' trademark. The company still uses coca leaf in the product, from de-cocainized leaves. Caffeine replaced cocaine. Yet during WWII, this stimulant was not readily available.

The chemists found that they could synthetically produce caffeine from bat droppings. This idea was nixed, and they survived WWII without caffeine.
5. Frederick the Great ordered roughcast bronze buttons to be placed on all Prussian soldiers sleeves. What was his reason for this?

Answer: To keep his soldiers from wiping their noses on their sleeves

Interesting, yet true.
6. William E. Brockway. Who was he?

Answer: A counterfeiter

William E. Brockway re-produced an 1865 U.S. $100 bill so close to the original recognized by the U.S Treasury Department, they recalled all genuine $100 bills from circulation.
7. Lithium is a light metallic salt used for?

Answer: The treatment of Bi-Polar Affective Disorder

The water supply in El Paso, Texas, contains enough natural lithium to contribute to the low incidence of mental illness.
8. Ethyl mercoptan attracts which creature?

Answer: Buzzards

Ethyl mercoptan smells of raw sewage, rotten cabbage, even rotted flesh. The Mohave Desert contains hundreds of miles of large natural gas lines. A similar chemical is added to natural gas to give it a 'rotten egg' smell. Or more so, rotting flesh. These gas lines tend to leak. Repair crews are able to find these breaches at a glance. Look to the sky for buzzards. Buzzards smell rotting flesh from miles away, and they will circle the area of the leak, looking for food.
9. Can you name the first Secretary of the Treasury of The United States?

Answer: Alexander Hamilton

Alexander Hamilton also co-drafted the U.S Constitution.
10. In 1865, a five year old boy named Max Hoffman was buried. What makes him interesting?

Answer: He was exhumed two days later, and found alive

Max was buried alive. He survived almost two days, when he was finally exhumed by his father, at the urging of Max's mother. He was a normal 5 year old after a few weeks of rest. Max lived well into his eighties. His most prized possession was the pair of brass coffin handles he had removed while buried.
