Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Hello, I am Sherlock Holmes and I have some strange mysteries to solve. We will start with animals. I was doing some detective work and discovered that there is an animal which can weigh up to seven tons at birth. Can you tell me what it is?

Answer: blue whale

You are quite right; it's the blue whale. Why, I do say, that is one big baby! Did you know that by 2010 the blue whale was considered an endangered species? This is why we must take care of our oceans; after all, we want these big animals to be around for a long time.
2. Next we move on to celebrities. Why, just the other day I saw the strangest thing. I was in a celebrity's house looking for clues, and inside a walk-in closet I saw the celebrity sound asleep! I don't know his name, but I know he once starred in the show "ER" and the movie "Ocean's Eleven". What is his name?

Answer: George Clooney

Strange gent he is. Imagine, sleeping in a closet. He has said that the bedrooms are often "too light". I saw a nice note while I was there too. It was from his Aunt Rosemary. Did you know that Rosemary Clooney was his aunt? She was a lovely actress and singer.
3. Alright ladies and gents, we now enter the entertainment category. I was listening to the radio on my ride to work. I started to think, "I wonder what the first song aired on the radio was". Some of the lyrics to this song are "fall on your knees o hear the angels voices". What song was this?

Answer: O Holy Night

"O Holy Night" was the first song aired on the radio! I have always loved that song. It was first heard on the radio in 1906. The song "O Holy Night" was composed by Adolphe Adam in 1847.
4. Let's move onto geography then, shall we? I came across the longest geographical name: "Krung thep maha nakorn amorn ratana kosinmahintar ayutthay amaha dilok phop noppa ratrajathani burirom udom rajaniwesmahasat harn amorn phimarn avatarn sathit sakkattiya visanukamprasit". Wow! That is 163 letters. In which country would I find it?

Answer: Thailand

I'd hate to have that on a spelling test. Say, did you know that Thailand is twice the size of Wyoming? It's true; I just saw it in my detective book called "The World Factbook".
5. Oh, I know, let's go back in time and look at some history, shall we? Hmm...we Brits have done some interesting things. Did you know that we once just eliminated 11 days from a certain year? I wish I could recall when that was. Perhaps you could tell me in what year this happened?

Answer: 1752

Imagine that...11 days gone. Well, you see, it had to be done, as the British went from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar in 1752. In order to compensate for the difference and keep on track, leaders decided to eliminate eleven days of that year.
6. Let us explore world. Why, last summer I took my holiday in the United States, in the state of Illinois, to be precise. Do you know I almost got arrested for dancing? Dancing! What was my crime?

Answer: bare feet while dancing

It's true, ladies and gents. Illinois has a law forbidding people to dance barefoot. Another interesting law from Illinois states that a theatre manager in Winnetka can kick you out of his theatre if your feet stink. Hmm...maybe that's why I can't dance barefoot. (Sniffs his foot) They could stand to be cleaned again.
7. Oh, my favorite category: literature. My favorite writer, of course, is Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, my creator. I was quite upset with him at one point, however, when he had the nerve to have me done in. Who was the man who supposedly killed me?

Answer: Professor Moriarity

It was found out later in "The Empty House" that I, of course, did not die. You see, I faked my death to protect my good friend Watson. Brilliant, am I not?
8. I enjoy good music and I was wondering if you could help me with a music problem. Tchaikovsky used to hold his chin with his left hand when he was conducting. Tell me what explanation people provided for Tchaikovsky's odd action.

Answer: He thought his head would fall off.

You know these stories often get so twisted. In reality, Tchaikovsky was not afraid that his head would fall off. He held his chin up because when he conducted, his head kept tilting to the side. He eventually stopped conducting because he couldn't tolerate this situation. He did go on to become one of the greatest composers, however.
9. Religion is always an interesting topic. There is a verse in the King James Version of the Bible which contains every letter except for the letter Q. In what book of the Old Testament is it found?

Answer: Daniel

The verse is Daniel 4:37. It's true; I looked with my magnifying glass everywhere for a Q, but it's not there. There's also a verse in Ezra which contains every letter except for J.
10. Well, I have enjoyed having you as my junior detective, but it's time I am off to play some croquet. Oh, if you insist, one sports question before I go. The American city of Boston once banned croquet for fear that young unmarried couples would disappear into the bushes to...ahem...look for lost balls together. What type of sport is croquet?

Answer: Lawn game

Croquet can be a simple lawn game or a competitive sport. The banning of croquet happened in 1890. Silly, I think. And I know you were just about to ask me what the word "croquet" means. I used elementary logic my dear Trivians; that is how I knew you would ask. Croquet is a French term that means crooked stick.
