Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The 2009 film, "The Damned United" covered Brian Clough's 44 day reign as manager of which football club?

Answer: Leeds United

Brian Clough took over from Don Revie as manager of Leeds United when Revie departed to become manager of the England national team in 1974, but Clough's appointment was highly controversial with the majority of fans not welcoming him due to his previous criticism of both Revie and the team, about who he had referred to as "dirty" and "cheats". The dissatisfaction voiced by the fans and the players themselves, after Clough told them at their initial meeting, "The first thing you can do for me is throw your medals in the bin because you've never won anything fairly; you've done it by cheating" led to Clough being sacked by the club after just 44 days in charge, and replaced by Bolton Wanderers manager, Jimmy Armfield.
2. "Damn the torpedoes. Full speed ahead" is an often quoted line allegedly uttered by Rear Admiral David G. Farragut at the Battle of Mobile Bay, during which war?

Answer: American Civil War

The Battle of Mobile Bay occurred when a Union fleet led by Farragut attacked a smaller Confederate fleet commanded by Admiral Franklin Buchanan who were guarding the entrance to Mobile Bay in the Gulf of Mexico.
The bay was guarded with naval mines called torpedoes, one of which was struck by the USS Tecumseh, a monitor ship that was part of Farragut's fleet, causing the ship to sink.
When the other ships in the fleet started to fall back, Farragut demanded to know the reason, and on being informed of the torpedoes, gave the cry, "Damn the torpedoes. Four bells, Captain Drayton, go ahead. Jouett, full speed", usually paraphrased to "Damn the torpedoes. Full speed ahead".
3. "The Beautiful And The Damned" (1922) was the second novel from which author, whose debut had been "This Side Of Paradise" (1920)?

Answer: F. Scott Fitzgerald

Fitzgerald is much better known for "The Great Gatsby" (1925) than for either of his first two novels, but "The Beautiful And The Damned" (1922) is a damned fine, and beautifully written novel.
Set in the 1920s Golden Age of Jazz, the book is believed to be based on Fitzgerald's relationship with his wife and manager, Zelda, and concerns the main character's discomfort at being wealthy and in the public eye, whilst experiencing a troubled marital relationship.
4. In 1992, who reached the top 20 in charts throughout the world, with "Damn, I Wish I Was Your Lover"?

Answer: Sophie B. Hawkins

Although Hawkins is often remembered as a one hit wonder due to the success of "Damn, I Wish I Was Your Lover" (1992), she also had a US Billboard Hot 100 top ten hit in 1995 with "As I Lay Me Down", as well as a total of four top ten hits on the Canadian charts, one of which was "Right Beside You" (1994), which was also her biggest UK hit, peaking at number 13.
5. In a 2019 political debate in USA, when told he didn't know that Medicare-for-all would include dental care and hearing aids for senior citizens, which senator responded with, "I do know it, I wrote the damn bill."?

Answer: Bernie Sanders

The exchange happened during the Democratic debates, between candidates hopeful of securing the Democratic nomination for president in the 2020 election.
When Sanders stated that union members would benefit from Medicare-for-all, along with senior citizens as dental care, hearing aids, and eyeglasses would all be included, Ohio Congress member, Tim Ryan replied with, "But you don't know that, you don't know that, Bernie", leading to Sanders' immediate response, which, just days after the debate, found its way onto bumper stickers supporting his campaign.
6. Apart from a couple of hiatus between 1984 and 1988 and then between 1992 and 1996, Raymond Burns has been guitarist with rock band The Damned since 1976. What is the name by which Burns is better known?

Answer: Captain Sensible

The Damned were the first UK punk band to release a single, the classic "New Rose" back in 1976 which only just made it into the UK top 100, but it did cement their place in the history books.
They went on to have six UK top 30 hits between 1979 and 1987, including "Grimly Fiendish" in 1985 and their biggest hit, a cover of "Eloise" which reached number three in 1986.
Captain Sensible had a solo UK number one in 1982, with a cover of "Happy Talk", originally from the 1949 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical "South Pacific".
7. "There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics" is a well known quote, although the original author is unknown. To which British prime minister did Mark Twain attribute the quote?

Answer: Benjamin Disraeli

In 1907, Twain wrote of, "the remark attributed to Disraeli would often apply with justice and force: 'There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics.'", but the phrase was never uttered by Disraeli in any of his speeches, nor contained in any of his writings.

In fact the phrase never gained any popularity until well after Disraeli's death in 1881, so it seems most unlikely that he was the original author. The origins of the phrase are believed to lie in the late 19th century observance regarding legal witness, which stated that there were three kinds of witness. these being liars, damned liars and experts.
8. Damn The Weather is a cocktail that originated in the USA during the prohibition era. What is the main spirit of a Damn The Weather?

Answer: Gin

A Damn The Weather is a cocktail, shaken and chilled, consisting of gin, sweet vermouth, orange juice, and a sweetener, usually in the form of Triple Sec or Curacao.
It was originally made, as were many prohibition era cocktails, from bathtub gin, and the orange juice was an ideal way of disguising the aroma and flavour of such a poor quality spirit.
The origins of the name are unclear, but when a drink tastes this good, what does a name matter?
9. In the "Damn Nation" (2005) series of comic books by Andrew Cosby and J. Alexander, most of the population of USA has fled the country to escape what type of threat?

Answer: Vampires

The "Damn Nation" comic books from 2005 were a mini series of three issues which saw the USA covered in barbed wire fences, with all ports and borders locked down as the citizens who had not escaped battled to rid the country of a plague of vampires.
Luckily a specialist team of scientists hiding out in Buffalo discover a cure, but with the president now residing in the American embassy in London, will they get the chance to use it?
10. Our final question, and "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn", but I'm sure you can name the 1939 film this line is from.

Answer: Gone With The Wind

Adapted from Margaret Mitchell's 1936 novel, this is a classic tale of love in the American south, set against the backdrop of the American Civil War.
Clark Gable as Rhett Butler, Lesley Howard as Ashley Wilkes, Olivia de Havilland as Melanie Hamilton and of course Vivien Leigh as Scarlett O'Hara have entertained audiences ever since, although the film has come in for its fair share of criticism since its release for glorifying slavery.
In all, "Gone With The Wind" won a total of ten Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actress (Leigh) and Best Supporting Actress, won by Hattie McDaniel for her role as Mammy.
