Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At times, McDonald's Happy Meals came with different toys for girls and boys. In the 90s, when the girls' toy was a Barbie toy, the boys' toy was usually what, by the same company?

Answer: Hot Wheels

Hot Wheels and Barbie are both made by the Mattel company. Barbie was created by Ruth Handler, the wife of a co-founder of Mattel. Barbie was first revealed to the world at the American International Toy Fair in 1959. Hot Wheels are toy cars, modeled after many different real-life cars, that were first manufactured in 1968. In addition to being McDonald's toys, Barbie and Hot Wheels have been paired together (one as a 'girl' toy, one as a 'boy' toy) in other ways. For example, when Mattel began marketing functional computers for children, they made a Barbie computer, and a Hot Wheels computer.

Happy Meals have been served at McDonald's since 1979. When I was a kid, the Barbie/Hot Wheel toys were frequently available, as were toys based on whatever kids' movie was currently popular.
2. Many countries around the world have scouting programs based on Lord Baden-Powell's original Boy Scouts program. In some of these countries, boys who are too young to join the Scout section can become Cub Scouts. Which of these is a program for girls under the minimum age requirement for being a Scout/Guide?

Answer: Brownies

The Brownies are a component of the Girl Scouts, or Girl Guides, for young girls who are roughly 6-9 years old. The exact age limits for each section of Guides differs from region to region. When I was in Girl Guides in Canada, the age limits were: for Sparks, ages 5-6; for Brownies, ages 7-8; for Girl Guides, ages 9-12; for Pathfinders, ages 12-14; and for Rangers, ages 15-17.

In other regions, the youngest girls in the guiding organization are called Rainbow Guides, rather than Sparks. Sparks or Rainbow Guides are the female equivalent to Beaver Scouts - young boys below the required age for Cub Scouts.
3. Which of these, on average, costs a lot more for young men than for young women in the US and Canada?

Answer: Car insurance

Car insurance for male drivers is, on average, higher than female drivers in the US and Canada. This is especially true for adolescents and new drivers, even those who are insured as secondary drivers. This is due to statistics that show that males typically make more costly insurance claims. Males tend to drive more often and farther distances than females, and are therefore more likely to get into accidents at all ages. Young women may have their fair share of 'oops'es behind the wheel, but young men are typically more reckless and therefore their accidents end up being more serious or expensive. Generally, insurance costs for males will decrease as the individual gets older and gains more driving experience, unless there are accidents and tickets on their record.
4. Are female brains smaller than male brains?

Answer: Yes

The average anatomical size and weight of the brain is a bit smaller in females than in males. Of course, this is true for many parts of the body; females are generally built smaller than males. The brain needs to be smaller because the skull is smaller.

In adults, men's brains weigh around 11% more than those of females. Brain size has little to do with intelligence, however, as the neurons still function similarly in larger or smaller brains.
5. In psychology, what is the female equivalent of boys' Oedipus complex?

Answer: Electra complex

The Freudian concept of the Oedipus complex refers to the special attachment young boys supposedly feel for their mothers, while being jealous of their fathers competing for Mom's attention. The Electra complex, a term coined by Freud's protege Carl Jung, is quite similar and refers to a girl's attachment to her father. The concept of "penis envy" is another component of the Electra complex, in that girls are supposedly jealous of not having a penis. According to Freud, "penis envy" causes a young girl to become less attached to her mother and gravitate to her father.

The complex is named after Electra, of Greek mythology, who wanted her mother dead as revenge for her father's death.
6. Sometimes, men and women are so different, it's like they come from entirely separate planets! According to the title of a popular non-fiction book, while males originate from Mars, where do women come from?

Answer: Venus

"Men Are from Mars, Women are From Venus"(1992) was written by John Gray as a relationship manual. Gray attempted to explain relationship differences among the sexes (including in terms of communication, emotions, etc.) in a way that would help one to better understand the other.

The book's popularity led to Gray's writing of follow-up books, including "Mars and Venus in the Bedroom"(1998) and "Mars and Venus Starting Over"(1999).
7. Traditionally at track-and-field competitions, the ten-event decathlon has been reserved for men only. For many of these competitions, including the Summer Olympics, in how many events do women normally compete--in what is considered the women's equivalent to the decathlon?

Answer: Seven

The women's equivalent of the decathlon is the heptathlon - seven events. Prior to 1980, only a five-event pentathlon was approved for women's competitions. The International Association of Athletics Federations approved a decathlon for women in 2001, and women were able to compete in ten-event competitions in IAAF competitions. In the 2008 Summer Olympics, however, the heptathlon was the largest Olympic track-and-field event for women in the Olympics.

The women's events in either decathlon or heptathlon also differ from men's events in that the shot-put weighs less, the javelin weighs less, the hurdles are set lower, etc.
8. Though this notion has been steadily declining over the past decades, many people still feel that it's proper for girls to wait for boys to show interest and ask them out. However, there are times when it's been traditionally more 'proper' for girls to ask boys out. One such time is a customary event named after whom?

Answer: Sadie Hawkins

The traditional Sadie Hawkins Dance, in middle schools and high schools in the United States as well as some other countries, is an event to which girls are supposed to ask the boy of their choice to accompany them, rather than the other way around. The event was named after Sadie Hawkins, a character in the "Li'l Abner" comic strip.

In the comic, unmarried women were given one day per year (November 13) to chase after the town's bachelors and marry one, if they caught him. This chasing after bachelors event was first published in the comic on November 13, 1937, and the first Sadie Hawkins dance was held in the US in November 1938.

A similar event, sometimes called a Spinsters' Ball, is also frequently held, but for adult women rather than teenagers.
9. In the animal kingdom, phalaropes exhibit a reversed sexual dimorphism - the females pursue mates, and the males care for the young. What's a phalarope?

Answer: bird

Phalaropes are shorebirds. There are three species: the Red Phalarope, Red-Necked Phalarope, and the Wilson's Phalarope. Unlike most species of birds, female phalaropes tend to be bigger and more brightly coloured than their male counterparts. Females actively pursue males for mating, and are usually the more aggressive birds, known for defending their mates and nests.

The female is still the one who has to lay eggs of course, but after doing so, she then migrates and leaves her male mate to incubate the eggs and look after the babies.
10. When it comes to dating and sexual relationships, older men who land young, hot women are often praised and revered. However, society seems less comfortable with older women/younger men relationships. By what somewhat derogatory term are older women who 'prey' on young men known as?

Answer: Cougars

While a cougar is a generic term for a woman who is involved with a younger man, it mostly applies to women over 40 who are interested in men at least eight-ten years younger than themselves, often purely for sex. Many bars and clubs have "Cougar nights" in which women of a certain age get in free or receive free drinks, or a similar perk. Cougars' boy toys are often called cubs.

Other similar terms include: Puma, a.k.a. Cougar-in-Training (a slightly younger woman, usually in her 30s, who goes after younger guys); Chickenhawk (an older male who pursues young males); and Manther, one slang term for male Cougars.
