Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The song, "Some Kind of Wonderful", was first recorded by Soul Brother Six, but became a top-three hit in 1975 for a band also known for "We're an American Band" and, somewhat fittingly, "The Loco-Motion". What band is this?

Answer: Grand Funk Railroad

"Some Kind of Wonderful" is a song written by John Ellison and first recorded by his group, Soul Brothers Six, in 1967 and it peaked at number 91 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. In 1974, Grand Funk Railroad recorded the song for the group's ninth album, "All the Girls in the World Beware!!!" - the single reached number three on the Billboard Hot 100. Earlier, they had two number one hits with "The Loco-Motion," and "We're an American Band".

My favorite GFR song, however, is 1970's "I'm Your Captain (Closer to Home)" - the ten-minute version of course!
2. The Seven Wonders of the (Ancient) World is a list of impressive structures that has been around in many forms since the first century BC. The current list's most famous member is, of course, the Great Pyramid of Giza, the oldest of the wonders. Of the remaining six members, how many can still be seen?

Answer: None

While the Great Pyramid is over 4500 years old and still stands, sadly the other six, all less than 3000 years old, were destroyed over the years.

The other six Wonders of the Ancient World were: The Colossus of Rhodes, the Lighthouse of Alexandria, the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, the Temple of Artemis and the Statue of Zeus.
3. The song, "What a Wonderful World", was a single released in 1967 by the gravelly-voiced and trumpet-playing "Satchmo", who was also well known for his 1964 "Hello Dolly". What is his real name?

Answer: Louis Armstrong

"What a Wonderful World" is a jazz song written by Bob Thiele (as "George Douglas") and George David Weiss. It was recorded by Louis Daniel Armstrong and released in 1967 as a single which topped the pop charts in the United Kingdom. Armstrong's recording was inducted in the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999.
4. Before the age of "stereo", the song, "The Book of Love", opened with line "I wonder wonder who-oo-oo who, Who wrote the book of love?" What band released this song in 1958?

Answer: The Monotones

The song was written by the Monotones, recorded in 1957, and reached number five on the pop chart in 1958. Unfortunately, the Monotones never had another successful song and so have earned "one hit wonder" status.
5. Wonder Woman is a superhero, first seen in "All Star Comics #8" released in 1941. What accessory piece "armed" her with her powers?

Answer: Bracelets

Wonder Woman's full name is Princess Diana of Themyscira and she also went by Diana Prince. She was created by William Moulton Marston and artist Harry G. Peter. Her indestructible Bracelets of Submission could be used for a variety of defenses, including the deflection of weapons' fire, and the absorption of the energy of a long fall.
6. Eric Clapton wrote a ballad in 1976 for his wife, Pattie Boyd, while she was readying for a party. What "wonderful" song was this?

Answer: Wonderful Tonight

Somewhat ironically, the party for which they were preparing was one given by Paul McCartney of the Beatles and his wife Linda. Another Beatle, the so-called "Quiet Beatle", George Harrison, according to the stories, had his wife, Pattie Boyd, essentially stolen away by Clapton. Clapton wrote a song about his (originally unrequited) love for Pattie, the classic rock hit, "Layla", released in 1971 by Derek and the Dominos.
7. Used comically in a now classic American television advertising campaign for Staples - the office supply company - the song, "It's The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year", is normally meant to celebrate Christmas. However, what time of year, also special, if not somewhat notorious, is being targeted by the Staples ad, which includes a happy, dancing dad and gloomy kids?

Answer: Back to School

Staples produced the humorous ad in the mid 1990s and has run it annually for its "Back to School" campaign.

"It's The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year", eventually recorded by numerous artists, was originally released in 1963 by Andy Williams on "The Andy Williams Christmas Album" and his version especially has remained a seasonal favorite.
8. The film, "It's a Wonderful Life" was produced and directed by Frank Capra and released in 1946. Its uplifting theme has made it a Christmas holiday favorite although it did not fare well at the box office in its day. It might be too easy to ask who played George Bailey (it was James Stewart), so - who played the bombastic, villainous Mr. Potter who wanted to take over the Savings and Loan? Hint: He's got a famous actress grandniece.

Answer: Lionel Barrymore

Lionel Barrymore (1878-1954), the great uncle of actress Drew Barrymore, made dozens of movies and has two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He suffered from arthritis and at least two broken hips and a broken kneecap in his later years which confined him to a wheelchair - which was well used in adding to the intimidating nature of his Mr. Potter character in "It's a Wonderful Life".
9. Released in 1979, the song, "Wonderful Christmas Time", is a great holiday favorite written by Paul McCartney. Which other Beatle performs on the recording?

Answer: None

According to Forbes, Paul McCartney wrote, produced and played all the instruments for this song, for which he, alone, earns estimated annual royalties of between US$400,000 and $600,000.
10. At one dramatic point near the end of 1980's "The Empire Strikes Back", the partially discombobulated droid C-3PO utters, "I never doubted you for a second. Wonderful!" What did R2-D2 do that prompted C-3PO's saying that?

Answer: Opens a locked door in the Cloud City

During the escape from Lando Calrissian's Cloud City, while C-3PO is in pieces and being carried on Chewbacca's back, they come upon a locked door. The ever-capable R2-D2 tries to communicate with the facility computer to open the door. When R2-D2 beeps about something, C-3PO responds, "Ah! We're not interested in the hyperdrive on the Millennium Falcon. It's fixed! Just open the door, you stupid lump!"

When R2-D2 finally opens the door, C-3PO shouts, "I never doubted you for a second. Wonderful!"

Of course, the hyperdrive wasn't fixed and shortly this caused the stalwart team much grief.

The other heroic deeds listed are all attributable to R2-D2 from the original trilogy, but none were from "The Empire Strikes Back".
