Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which British scientist is recognised as officially discovering the element, oxygen, in 1774?

Answer: Joseph Priestley

On the question of who discovered it first, it is probably more noteworthy that the Swedish Pomeranian and German chemist, Carl Wilhelm Scheele, discovered oxygen in 1772, but for some reason he didn't publish his findings until five years later.

The Englishman credited with the discovery of oxygen, Joseph Priestly, performed his own research and made his discovery in 1774. However, unlike Scheele, he almost immediately published his findings and became recognised as the man who discovered this element.
2. Belgium is known throughout the globe for producing all manner of beers, including beer flavoured with fruit. However, one specific beer stands head and shoulders above the others. Which fruit is used in the production of these world famous Kriek beers?

Answer: Cherries

Kriek beer traditionally uses Morello cherries as a key ingredient and it is this fruit which gives Kriek beer its distinctive 'sour' taste. Kriek Beer is traditionally brewed using a fermentation technique known as Lambic, which produces a very distinctive and 'funky' taste.

It is brewed in the South West of Belgium in the Pajottenland region as well as at the Cantillon Brewery based in Brussels.
3. All of these actresses are famous and known for outstanding performances but which of these ladies has not won the coveted Oscar for Best Actress?

Answer: Judy Garland

Unbelievably, while Julie Garland as twice nominated for an Oscar with her roles in 'A Star is Born' and 'Judgement at Nuremburg', she didn't manage to win one.

Sandra Bullock won her Best Actress Oscar in 2010 in the film 'The Blind Side' and
Emma Stone in 2017 for her delightful role in 'La La Land'. Nicole Kidman won her Best Actress Oscar in 2003 in the film 'The Hours'.
4. The United States of America has been blessed with the rich gift of many different natural resources including iron ore, coal and of course oil. In which state was the first oil well deployed?

Answer: Pennsylvania

The first oil well was built near Titusville, Pennsylvania when the Seneca Oil Company (previously known as the 'Pennsylvania Rock Oil Company') struck 'black gold' in August 1859.

As an aside, the crude oil gained from this well was refined into kerosene and satisfied the exceptionally high demand for lamp oil.
5. According to the United Nations, there are nearly 200 countries in the world, but which is classified as the world's smallest one?

Answer: Vatican City

The Holy See or Vatican City is the smallest country in the world. As a City State it is located inside the City of Rome and is truly tiny with less that half a sq km in size. It is home to His Holiness the Pope and the Roman Catholic Church.
6. The metric system of measurement, which uses the metre, litre, and gram as units of length, capacity, and weight respectively is used throughout the world. Which of the countries, surprisingly, does NOT officially use the metric system?

Answer: United States of America

As of 2019, only three countries were globally recognised as not having adopted the Metric SI System as their official system of weights and measures. These are Myanmar (Burma), Liberia, and the USA.

It should be pointed out that even these countries do use some elements of the metric system.
7. What is the well known US landmark, that gained additional popularity in the TV series 'Breaking Bad', where the states of Utah, Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona all meet?

Answer: Four Corners Monument

The point at which these US states all intersect is known as the Four Corners Monument. The 'Breaking Bad' reference was due to a scene where Skyler, one of the series' characters, flipped a coin to decide which US state she was going to run to (This was shown in 'Breaking Bad', Season 4. Episode 6 'Cornered').
8. Many nations' flags include various 'items' within their design - for example the swords included within the flag of Saudi Arabia or the stylised dragon in Bhutan's and Wales' national flags. Which is the only country that displays the Holy Bible on its flag?

Answer: Dominican Republic

The flag of the Dominican Republic is based on red and blue squares divided by a white cross and includes the nation's coat of arms. The coat of arms incorporates on its central shield the national flag, a Bible, and a cross, together with branches of laurel and palm, the name of the country, and the motto "Dios, patria, libertad" which translates to 'God, Fatherland, Liberty'.
9. Which weapon was described as nothing more than an 'educated drain pipe'?

Answer: Trench mortar

The rapid spread of trench warfare during World War I forced the design of a weapon that could achieve very high angles (certainly above 45 degrees) of fire so that the shell could be landed directly into the enemy trench.

The initial weapon was designed and built by the engineer Wilfred Stokes. When it was first seen by the Board of Ordnance it was rejected as they saw it little more than an educated drainpipe. Subsequently, contracts were placed and it was used by the British and their Allies throughout the war as an effective weapons platform and has since become a standard infantry weapon around the globe.

All of the other weapons are rocket propelled, direct line of sight weapons.
10. What is the well known catchphrase that is engraved on Mel Blanc's gravestone?

Answer: That's all folks!

Throughout his career, Mel Blanc became the voice of many much loved cartoon characters including Porky Pig, Bugs Bunny and Foghorn Leghorn, to name but a few.

Following his death in July 1989, it was Porky Pig's well known catch phrase uttered at the end of each cartoon that was inscribed on Mel's gravestone for all eternity. A fitting epitaph for a much loved man.
