Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the surname of the Private Investigator on television played by Tom Selleck?

Answer: Magnum

Thomas Magnum, to be precise. Love that moustache. The best mo' on TV. "Magnum PI" ran for 8 seasons between 1980 and 1988 with 155 episodes.
2. What 1936 film starred Clark Gable as a gambling hall operator, Jeanette MacDonald as a singer looking to work for him and Spencer Tracy as a priest?

Answer: San Francisco

This film was nominated for 6 Oscars and won 1 of them. The win was for Best Sound Recording. The nominations were for Best Picture, Best Leading Actor, Best Director, Best Assistant Director and Best Writing Original Screenplay.
3. First elected to the House of Representatives (US Congress) in 1984, as the representative for Alabama's First Congressional District was Sonny_______.

Answer: Callahan

He was formerly chair of the House Appropriations subcommittee on foreign operations. I don't care what other people say, politics is very entertaining.
4. What 1976 movie starred John Wayne, Lauren Bacall, Ron Howard and James Stewart?

Answer: The Shootist

What a lineup! The Duke was the king! Ron Howard scored himself a Golden Globe Nomination in 1977 for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Gillom Rogers, a young man who idolises Wayne's character and tries to emulate his success with a six-shooter.
5. Who won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Country Collaboration with Vocal for the song "Same Old Train"?

Answer: Clint Black

He was also the 2001 St. Jude Children's Research Hospital Celebrity of the Year.
6. What was the fast-paced, thrashing, anarchic music made most famous by The Sex Pistols?

Answer: Punk

The Pistols were only together as a group for less than 2 years but they had an enormous influence on British music as the inspiration for an independent, underground scene. They did one of the best renditions of Britain's national anthem, "God Save the Queen".
7. What is the name of both a James Bond-style, evil genius in "The Simpsons" and a sign of the zodiac?

Answer: Scorpio

Hank Scorpio was trying to take over the west coast of the US. Homer took a job with Scorpio and the family moved to Cypress Creek, a perfect community where Homer got a great job and the rest of the family hated it. Cypress Creek has 4 places to buy hammocks and they're all located in the Hammock Complex on Third Street (which is in the Hammock District).
8. Who is the singer affectionately known as "The Chairman of the Board" and "Old Blue Eyes"?

Answer: Frank Sinatra

Frank did it His Way. Not only was he one of the greatest singers and entertainers ever, he was an Oscar-winning actor to boot. He won his Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role as Private Angelo Maggio in "From Here to Eternity".
9. What is the last word in the name of this 1978 movie featuring an Orangutan: "Every which way but ______"?

Answer: Loose

Orangutan actually comes from the Malay words "Orang Hutan" which translates literally into English as "Jungle Person". I actually haven't seen the movie but I think that counts as interesting information.
10. And finally, what is the Common Bond?

Answer: Dirty Harry

Here's how it works: Q1: Harry uses a ".44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world and would blow your head clean off". Q2: San Francisco is where DH was set. Q3: Callahan is Harry's surname. Q4: "The Shootist" was directed by Don Siegel who also directed DH. Q5: Clint Black.

It's hardly a common first name, now, is it? Q6: "Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?" Harry's most famous quote. Q7: Scorpio was the killer played by Andrew Robinson who was an avowed pacificist and had to be taught how to use a gun. Q8: Frank was the original choice to play Harry but pulled out owing to other committments. Q9: Clint Eastwood also featured in this movie.

Incidently, Loose is the last word in the tagline from DH: "You don't assign him to murder cases. You just turn him loose."
