Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Television: Everyone is familiar with the Beatles' 'Yellow Submarine' but which children's television show features a yellow submarine?

Answer: Thunderbirds

'Thunderbirds' was a Gerry Anderson production featuring marionettes that aired in 1964. Despite there only being 32 episodes in the original series, it has spawned a 2004 movie and a CGI series that commenced in 2014. Thunderbird Four is a yellow submersible that is transported to the danger zone inside Thunderbird Two's Pod Four.

This question was supplied by leith90, with no strings attached.
2. Music: Swiss electronic duo, Yello, had a hit with which of the following titles in 1985?

Answer: Oh Yeah

Featuring Dieter Meier and Boris Blank, Yello formed in 1979 in Zurich. Blank was an original founding member along with Carlos Peron. Peron would leave the band in 1983 to pursue a solo career. "Oh Yeah", which featured in the movie 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off', was the band's best known song, peaking at number 51 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US. They also did well with the single "The Race" which broke into the Top Ten of the UK Singles charts in 1988.

3. Hobbies: The yellow-flowered Lithops Weberi, which looks like a stone, belongs to which category of plants?

Answer: Succulents

Native to southern Africa the Lithops Weberi is a succulent that looks like a greyish stone with a split in the top. It's often known as a 'Living Stone' or 'Pebble Plant' and is made of two leaves. As it lies close to the ground it is camouflaged against being eaten by animals. The daisy-type flower which may be yellow or white extends out of the depression between the leaves.

This juicy question was dug up by leith90.
4. Animals: All these creatures flaunt themselves with bright yellow, but which of them belongs to a different class from the other three?

Answer: Yellow tang

The yellow tang is a reef dwelling fish, found around the waters of Hawaii and off the coast of Japan. Because of its stunning bright yellow colours, it is often kept in aquariums.

The other three options are birds, with yellow feathers. Yellowhammers are members of the bunting family, found across Europe and parts of Asia, while the European goldfinch has bright yellow bars on its wings. The golden oriole is also a European bird, but (wisely) spends winters in the warmer climate of Africa.

5. Brain Teaser: Find the yellow object hidden in the following sentence. In Durban, a nanny from Cape Town bought some plantains.

Answer: Banana

Solution: In DurBAN, A NAnny

Most bananas used in cooking are called plantains. Bananas, which are classed as a berry, are usually elongated and curved. Whilst we commonly associate the banana with the colour yellow, the outer rind of the fruit may be green, yellow, red, purple, or brown when ripe.

6. General: A pale shade of yellow is lemon, named for the fruit, but if your new car is a lemon is that good?

Answer: No

A lemon, when referring primarily to cars, is one that's never worked properly since it was made. In Australia 'Lemon Laws' were brought in to protect consumers from defective merchandise that continually fail to meet accepted standards. While the wording and scope of the law varies from country to country and even state to state, the law is to ensure the vehicle or appliance is fixed or replaced within a stated time frame.

The jury is out on this question by leith90.
7. Geography: Three of these places have names which mean yellow. Which one doesn't?

Answer: Dublin

The name Dublin derives from the Irish words 'dubh', meaning 'black' and 'lind', meaning 'pool'. The name is believed to have originated from a real black pool, where the rivers Poddle and Liffey met.

Amarillo in Texas, is Spanish for 'yellow' and is probably named after the prolific yellow wildflowers that grow in the district.

The Hwang River is in South Korea, and the name, which just means 'yellow', with the name referring to its sandy banks.

8. Sport: Which English football (soccer) team is nicknamed the Canaries, and is known for its yellow kit?

Answer: Norwich City

The club was formed in 1902, with the 'canary' name apparently coming from European refugees who bred canaries. Other sources say it was an early club chairman who dubbed the team with the name. It may well be a combination of both, but the name is so associated with the team that the official website bears the name and the bird appears on the club crest.

9. Movies: A split yellow and white Volkswagen Microbus is, almost, as important a character as the humans in which of the following films?

Answer: Little Miss Sunshine

'Little Miss Sunshine' is a 2006 comedy that focusses on a dysfunctional family looking to travel 800 kilometres to Redondo Beach in California so that their youngest daughter can enter a beauty pageant. They are beset by their own individual problems as well as those that their car, an aging Volkswagen T2 Microbus, can dish up at them. These include breaking down, requiring to be pushed until it reaches a speed of twenty kilometres an hour before it will slip into gear and a horn that, at times, refuse to stop blaring. Along the way the family members come to realise that they are much stronger as a unit and that they need to rely on each other if they are to succeed.

The film, which won two Academy Awards, stars Toni Collette, Greg Kinnear, Steve Carrell and Alan Arkin.

10. Sci/Tech: Yellow fever is a viral disease causing haemorrhage and jaundice. What is the vector through which it is transmitted?

Answer: Mosquito

Yellow fever is spread from infected Aedes aegypti mosquitoes in the tropics, particularly parts of Africa and South America. While it can be prevented through vaccination, the disease is still prevalent. After an incubation period of three to six days, mild general symptoms of headache, fever, nausea and vomiting appear and last for a few days. A small percentage of people go on to enter the toxic phase which is characterised by bleeding in the eyes and mouth. Bleeding in the gastro-intestinal tract causes liver damage and jaundice - the 'yellow' of the name.
