Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the fruit of the oak tree called?

Answer: Acorn

Although acorns are an important food source for many birds and mammals, they are poisonous to some, such as horses. Propagation often relies on animals who build winter food stores, such as squirrels, and leave some behind.
2. In 2007, the carcass of what type of prehistoric animal was found in a layer of permafrost in Russia?

Answer: Mammoth

The largest species of mammoth would probably have been about 16ft at the shoulder and would have weighed between six to eight tons. However, other species were probably about the size of an Asian elephant.
3. Which South American mammal shares its name with one of the Seven Deadly Sins?

Answer: Sloth

The sloth spends its life in the trees, only coming down once a week to "do its business". The females only bear one baby a year, but may not find a mate every year owing to their lack of activity.
4. What was the nickname of Jennifer Grey's character in the movie "Dirty Dancing"?

Answer: Baby

"Dirty Dancing" was choreographed by Kenny Ortega, who was later widely acclaimed as the director of "High School Musical". He was trained by Gene Kelly.
5. What is the first name of legendary Argentinean soccer star Maradona?

Answer: Diego

Considered by many to be the greatest soccer player of all time, Maradonna has had to battle weight problems and cocaine addiction since retiring as a player. After a spell as a television host, he became coach of a national team in 2008.
6. To what type of group do Native Americans, such as Cherokee, Apache and Sioux, belong?

Answer: Tribe

The general definition of a tribe is a social group tied by blood, language and locality. Out of the many North American native tribes, 562 are federally recognised.
7. What are the caves of Lascaux in France famous for?

Answer: Wall paintings

The paintings are believed to be about 16,000 years old. They depict animals that lived in the area at that time (by fossils that have been found). The paintings were discovered in 1940, and the caves became a World Heritage Site in 1979.
8. What do you call a surprise attack where the instigators wait in concealment?

Answer: Ambush

One of the oldest forms of warfare, the ambush is most useful when the attacking force has fewer numbers and can gain advantage using surprise. The best escape from an ambush is to leave the way you came in--if at all possible.
9. In what item of jewelry was the Taylor-Burton diamond eventually set?

Answer: Necklace

The Taylor-Burton diamond was a 69 carat stone cut from a rough diamond of 241 carats. It was bought for Elizabeth Taylor by Richard Burton for her 40th birthday and set in a necklace of hundreds of small diamonds. After their divorce, Taylor sold it for five million dollars and used some of the proceeds to build a hospital in Botswana.
