Question 1 of 10
1. "Welcome to Mt. McTrivia Bus Tours. Please fasten your seatbelts and remain seated until we reach the peak. If you wish to avoid health risks, debark now," our guide warns, breathlessly.

As an experienced climber who has scaled peaks even more imposing than McTrivia, you are unconcerned by this warning. Not to be taken lightly, though, AMS is one malady that can be life-threatening to mountaineers. What is another name for this medical condition?
Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. "No, Quiztaker, there aren't any refreshment stands on the mountain. If you're thirsty, it's BYOSD (bring your own soft drink)," our guide explains, dryly.

Always one to keep things in theme, you berate yourself for forgetting a certain soft drink and settle for bottled water instead. Which of these is a citrus drink from PepsiCo that would indeed have gone nicely with the tour?
Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. "Quiztaker, there is no smoking on this bus, and you have the wrong mountain anyway. Mt. McTrivia does NOT smoke," our guide declares, fuming.

Going up the mountain brought to your mind that old song, "On Top of Old Smoky," and you just couldn't help singing a few bars. When reprimanded by the guide, you switch to the parody version, in which what rotund dinnertime object is lost due to a sneeze?
Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. "I assure you, there are no secret organizations headquartered on Mt. McTrivia. Besides, I'm sure you wouldn't be allowed in without an invitation," our guide surmises, covertly.

You had posed a theory that this mountain hid something like the League of Shadows, an organization of assassins. Of course, you're thinking of the mountain base where Bruce Wayne faced his fears and trained in the ways of the League. What 2005 movie is this from?
Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. "Our mountain is renowned for its diverse animal life, something I see one passenger has already observed. Quiztaker, do NOT lean so far out the window," our guide chides, unbendingly.

Upon seeing a beautiful wild cat in the distance, you risked life, limb, and the guide's displeasure to snap a picture from your window. Of the many creatures that are native to mountain habitats, which of these is NOT a real animal species?
Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. "Quiztaker, you'll only succeed in embarrassing yourself if you try to reenact some music video. I cannot let you off the bus," our guide informs, vocally.

Overtaken by an irrepressible urge, you begin to belt out an inspirational power ballad that compares life's trials to your present activity: climbing a mountain. Maybe an overdose of Hannah Montana is to blame, since "The Climb" was a hit song in 2009 for whom?
Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. "Watch out, Quiztaker. You may think the thingamajiggy over in that tree is some kind of 'cache,' but it could be a bomb...or a drug drop...or a ...." our guide theorizes, uncontainably.

If only you had a certain piece of technology and a set of numbers, you could confirm that the small box in the tree is exactly what you think it is: a geocache. What tech gadget is key to the sport of geocaching?
Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. "Mt. McTrivia has often been compared to Pikes Peak, one of Colorado's highest mountains. I, however, will always prefer the view from McTrivia's summit, " our guide remarks, pointedly.

Thankful that you have a vehicle and modern equipment, you remember a television episode where a doctor from the 1860s and three of her friends attempt to climb Pikes Peak. On what western series, set in Colorado Springs, did this happen?
Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. "We have almost reached the peak. Look down out your windows, are those clouds?" our guide wonders, foggily.

The thin air must have affected the guide's logic centers, since we are clearly high enough to be above the clouds. With feeling of elation, you wonder if you could be on what "happy" cloud of idiom?
Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. "This is as far as the bus will go! Let's all get out up here. I'm sure you'll agree it is only a short climb to the top," our guide says, uppishly.

The view at the peak is truly extraordinary. But unfortunately, you didn't convert your watch from Game Time to Mountain Time; you have to hurry back or you'll miss tonight's challenge! If McTrivia really did exist in North America's Mountain Time Zone, which of these mountain ranges would it be in?
Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts

Answer: Altitude sickness

Altitude sickness, also acute mountain sickness (AMS), usually occurs at heights of over 8,000 feet/2,400 meters, where less oxygen is available and air pressure is low. The best treatment is a swift descent. Symptoms include headache, dizziness, and nausea, leading some to mistake AMS for the flu or a hangover. Severe cases can lead to potentially lethal pulmonary or cerebral edema. To prevent AMS, mountaineers are encouraged to ascend gradually and get sufficient rest, allowing their bodies to acclimatize.

Answer: Mountain Dew

With a name that usually refers to moonshine whiskey, Tennessee-born Mountain Dew was first made in the 1940s to be mixed with liquor. Early packaging and ads kept Mountain Dew in touch with its roots, featuring a jug-toting fellow named Willy the Hillbilly and his pig. Pepsi acquired the formula in 1964, and eventually slogans like "Ya-Hoo Mountain Dew! It'll tickle yore innards," were replaced with a more modern approach.

In the 1990s, we were encouraged to "Do the Dew," which has grown to include a variety of flavors.

Answer: Meatball

"On top of spaghetti, all covered with cheese, I lost my poor meatball, when somebody sneezed." The children's classic, "On Top of Spaghetti," goes on to recount how the meatball ended up outdoors and sprouted into a tree whose fruitage consisted of meatballs and tomato sauce! In 1963, Tom Glazer put these lyrics to the tune of "On Top of Old Smoky," a folk song recorded by The Weavers in 1951.

The ballad tells of a lover lost on the snow-covered mountain, "for courtin' too slow."

Answer: Batman Begins

"Batman Begins" (2005) provides an origin story for DC Comics' Caped Crusader and Dark Knight, Bruce Wayne. At the invitation of Henri Ducard (Liam Neeson), Bruce (Christian Bale) goes to Ra's al Ghul's temple in the snowy mountains of Bhutan and there learns the martial art of ninjutsu.

Instead of joining the villainous League of Shadows, though, he returns to Gotham City to fight its corruption. Although set in Bhutan, the scenes featuring Ra's temple and its surroundings were filmed at Iceland's Vatnajokull glacier, the largest in Europe.

Answer: Mountain hog

The mountain lion, native to North and South America, answers to several names, including puma, cougar, panther, and catamount. Sadly, the survival of some mountain lion subspecies has been threatened by habitat loss and hunting. One of these is the highly endangered Florida panther; its population was estimated in 2010 to have grown to 100, thanks to conservation efforts. Mountain goats live in the peaks of western North America, and mountain gorillas are primarily found in central Africa's forests.

There is no such species as "mountain hog."

Answer: Miley Cyrus

"Ain't about how fast I get there, ain't about what's waiting on the other side, it's the climb." Miley Cyrus sang this inspirational, country-tinged pop song for the 2009 Disney film, "Hannah Montana: The Movie." Although "The Climb" performed well on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, reaching number four, its short-lived nomination for the Grammy Awards was deemed ineligible, as it was not specifically composed for the motion picture.

Answer: GPSr

Geocaching is a hobby that combines outdoorsmanship with technology and keen eyesight - it's an environmentally friendly, worldwide scavenger hunt! It started in the year 2000, when highly accurate GPS technology became available to the public and could be used to determine the coordinates of a hidden container. Once the container's coordinates are published online, a cacher uses his GPSr (Global Positioning System receiver) to locate the stash and signs his name in its logbook.

Answer: Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman

"Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman" (1993-1998) stars Jane Seymour in the title role of Dr. Mike, a pioneering doctor from Boston who travels west to the growing town overlooked by Pikes Peak, Colorado Springs. In the episode, "The Expedition," Dr. Mike is thwarted by injury in her attempt to climb the mountain, but her friends succeed in reaching its glorious summit. Pikes Peak was named for early 19th century explorer Zebulon Pike, and stands impressively in the Rocky Mountains at a height of 14,115 feet/4,302 meters.

Answer: Cloud Nine

Theories on the origin of "cloud nine" (a state of bliss) are many and varied. Since the 1930s and '40s, numbered "clouds" have been used in American idiom in allusion to the euphoric effects of alcohol or drugs. In a 1950s radio program, title character "Johnny Dollar" went to Cloud Nine when he was knocked out. Or possibly, the US Weather Bureau coined the expression: word has it that Level Nine once referred to cumulonimbus clouds reaching up to 30,000 or 40,000 feet in the air.

Answer: The Rockies

The Rocky Mountains received a namesake in western North America's Mountain Time Zone, since nearly all of the mountain range is within its borders. Mountain Time encompasses the Canadian province of Alberta, the Northwest Territories, and part of Nunavut.

Some of the many U.S. states under Mountain Time are Colorado, New Mexico, and Wyoming. Arizona keeps Mountain Standard Time year round, choosing not to observe daylight saving time. In Mexico, this time zone is considered the Pacific Zone.
