Thematic Story Time Trivia Questions

1. Tattoo enjoys paintings. While viewing art in London's National Gallery, he sees one of his favorite John Constable works, a rural scene showing a traditional country conveyance. He can't control his excitement, and bursts out with which phrase?

From Quiz
It's Not "Ze plane! Ze plane!"

Answer: "Ze Wain! Ze Wain!"

"The Hay Wain" is probably Constable's most famous piece. It is one of a series of large paintings of his that are known as "the six-footers". "The Hay Wain" was voted "second-most popular painting in any British gallery" in 2005.

2. It's Thursday, 18 July, 2013, in the Tour de France, and France's own Christophe Riblon is struggling up the Alpe-d'Huez. He may be feeling a bit of paranoia, but who is that huge bunch of guys chasing him?

From Quiz It's Not Paranoia

Answer: the Peloton

Riblon won the 18th Stage of the 2013 Tour de France, which included the climb up the Alpe-d'Huez, one of the most famous climbing stages of the Tour. The Peloton is the term given in the Tour to the pack of riders who make up the bulk of competitors at any given time in each stage. Stade de Reims is a traditionally strong soccer team in the French Ligue 1. The Legion Etrangere is the French Foreign Legion, and the Garrison of Rome was another term for the Praetorian Guard, which served as Rome's police force during the Republic.

3. The first card I got from Bill said he was travelling on a "ship" but he said he was in the Sahara. What kind of ship could he use in a desert?

From Quiz Waiting for Bill

Answer: Camel

Camels are adapted to travel in deserts. Apart from the hump which is full of fat and allows them to go for days without food or water, they have nostrils that can be closed against blown sand, long eyelashes and feet that splay out to avoid sinking in the sand. It is believed that the carol "I saw three ships come sailing in" actually refers to the three wise men travelling by camel. Tell Bill I am not going to wash his clothes if one of those camels spits on him!

4. Mustapha, the one eyed camel seller, is, unfortunately lying to me. We are in the Middle East so he can only offer me a one humped camel. Why is this?

From Quiz I Do Sell Camels. One Hump or Two?

Answer: The two humped camel comes from Central Asia

There are two types of camel, Dromedary (one hump) and Bactrian (two humps). The Dromedary is found in the Middle East and parts of Africa, while the Bactrian is native to Central Asia. No matter where they come from camels provide transport, milk, and meat. When they moult their coat provides material used in textiles. Contrary to popular myth their humps do not contain water for times of drought, they are in fact fatty deposits. The place that both species can be found living wild is Australia. Many were imported into Australia in the 19th century to transport construction materials. When motorised transport came along in the 20th century and replaced them they were released into the wild, where they have thrived. Their numbers have risen to such an extent that they pose a threat to native wildlife and culls now have to be carried out.

5. Fred, the new delivery driver, has been told to load the lorry with 12 cases of Camellia sinensis and 12 cases of Camellia assamica. Trouble is, he doesn't know what this is. What is he looking for in the warehouse?

From Quiz Do You Deliver?

Answer: Tea

Tea is separated into either Chinese or Indian. Camellia sinensis is Chinese and Camellia assamica is Indian. The leaves and leaf buds are used to make the tea, and the various varieties come from either the way these are then processed or from blending. Where the plants are grown also affects the flavour of the tea. The amount of light, rain and heat that the bush is subjected to all affect the final cup of tea that we drink in the morning.

6. When you do your packing, don't forget to throw in your swimsuit. For what mode of river transport was Mark Twain a licensed operator?

From Quiz Space in your Suitcase

Answer: Paddle steamer

Interestingly, Mark Twain was a licensed steamboat operator and by all accounts, enjoyed the work very much. Vessels that were for charter, but which did not have regular schedules, were known as tramp steamers. The United Kingdom has an active paddle steamer preservation society. All aboard!

7. The ladies at the ball look lovely in their silk gowns, but some of them are not silk; they are a fake silk. What is another name for this?

From Quiz All That Glitters

Answer: Rayon

Silk is a natural fabric produced by silkworms. Man-made silk is rayon. Made from cellulose fibre, it is not a true synthetic material, such as nylon, but neither is it a true natural material either. It usually has a much higher sheen to it than true silk. It was first produced in France in the 1880s as an alternative to silk, which was a very expensive fabric. It soon proved highly popular because it was very versatile and took dye well. It also drapes well, which makes it popular for curtains and furnishing fabrics, as well as for dresses and blouses.

8. At the place where I was made, I was put in a box with a lot of other chocolate soldiers. Imagine my joy when I was unpacked and put in the window of one of London's most prestigious food stores. Located on Piccadilly, what is the name of this shop?

From Quiz Adventures of a Chocolate Soldier

Answer: Fortnum and Mason

Founded as a grocery store in 1707, Fortnum's reputation was built on high quality merchandise. Answer: ...find Cape Canaveral?

An American launch site for spacecrafts, Cape Canaveral is situated on the eastern coast of Florida, about halfway down its Atlantic coastline. Run by the American Space Program, the Kennedy Space Center found at this point has been home to numerous space launches due to the fact that its proximity to the Equator allows for maximum linear velocity as the Earth rotates. The original London Bridge, sold to American Robert McColloch in the 1960s, was reconstructed in Arizona. Mount Elbert is the highest American peak in the Rockies located in Colorado while Myrtle Beach is on the Atlantic coast in South Carolina.

13. In the one act Christmas operetta "Amahl and the Night Visitors", what does Amahl say he wants to give the Three Wise Men to bring to the Christ Child?

From Quiz The Eggheads' Christmas Story Book

Answer: His crutch

"Amahl and the Night Visitors", by composer Gian Carlo Menotti, was written for American television and first broadcast live on Christmas Eve 1951. It became an annual holiday tradition through 1966. Due to a dispute between NBC and Mr. Menotti, it wasn't shown again until 1978 when a new version was filmed, some of it on location in Israel. Additionally, there were a couple of productions done in both the UK and Australia. Today a grainy copy of the 1955 kinescope can be seen on DVD. The 1978 version was released on video as well. There are often regional stage productions of "Amahl and the Night Visitors". The story is charming, the music is lively, the songs are both amusing and dramatic. If you've never seen it - treat yourself to watching a performance either live or recorded. You'll be glad you did. (Question and interesting information submitted by VanCoerte.)

14. Tattoo loves archaeology, so he was thrilled to discover that he was going to an Arab archipelago with over 170,000 ancient burial mounds. The name of what location, once known as Dilmun, was Tattoo excitedly shouting?

From Quiz It's Not "Ze plane! Ze plane!"

Answer: "Bahrain! Bahrain!"

Seriously proposed as the actual site of the Garden of Eden as Dilmun, Bahrain is an archipelago in the Persian Gulf that was declared a kingdom in 2002, gaining its independence from the United Kingdom. Estimates of the number of A'Ali burial mounds reach as high as 350,000, and may have taken thousands of years to create. Bahrain has also been known for millennia as a pearling center.

15. Shortly after my first drink of eggnog, I made the mistake of the evening. During a conversation with some friends, I ended up accidentally using the wrong emoji to get my point across. Where was I talking to my friends?

From Quiz Oh Holey Night

Answer: In a text message

While this may not be as horrible a social gaffe as one would think, I figured I'd message my friends early on in the night just to let them know that I was drinking eggnog (#eggnog #xmas #justnogthingz). Imagine my disappointment when I discovered the next morning that I sent them a cat emoji instead of a smiley face emoji! What a disappointment. For those not in the know, emojis are small images sent on cell phones alongside texts; graphical smileys, for instance, are emojis, but there are hundreds of others that've been developed over the years to accommodate for all possibilities. Japanese in origin, emojis were added for use in cell phones in the 2010s. In 2015, the word 'emoji' become the Oxford Dictionary's 'word of the year'.

Conditions mean that the route and distance vary from year to year, but it is in the region of 1700 miles and takes more than eight days to complete. If you see Bill while you are there, tell him not to bring one of those dogs home with him! If I have a dog it will be a lap dog.

From Quiz Space in your Suitcase

18. There are various bronze ornaments dotted around the ballroom, but unfortunately they are not true bronze. What could they be instead?

From Quiz All That Glitters

Answer: Spelter

True bronze articles were highly expensive. Spelter, which is a zinc alloy, was commonly used in the 19th century for many cheap items such as clock cases and candlesticks. These were cast in the same way as bronze items and were then given an artificial patina. As home ornamentation became popular, especially in the art deco period, it was used for copies of the famous art deco ladies, as well as for statues of animals, busts of heads and other popular ornaments of the day. These were often weighted with lead to give the feel of a true bronze ornament.

Would you like to make a reservation for dinner? [Contributed by pollucci19]

21. BRAIN TEASERS - Landing in Amsterdam, Ralph is mystified to read a notice that says, "Large dams supplement dikes". Then he realizes that there is a hidden message suggesting a tourist destination he could visit. Where should he go?

From Quiz Here, There and Everywhere

Answer: There - to the town where a famous Dutch cheese is made

"LargE DAMs supplement dikes" contains the name of a cheese for which the Netherlands is world famous, Edam. It is a pale yellow cheese, originating in the northern town of the same name, that is traditionally sold in spheres coated with red or yellow wax, although aged cheeses get a black wax coating. Amsterdam's red light district is a tourist attraction, as are the country's windmills. The Manneken Pis, a bronze fountain of a small urinating boy, is a famous tourist attraction and symbol of Brussels, in neighboring Belgium. None of these three, however, can be found in the hidden message.

22. Which rock band sang "Just because I'm-ESTIMATED DOWNLOAD TIME: 5:47 Okay, you seriously need to upgrade to high-speed. We were so close with this one. If the answer to this question was 'Coldplay', what would finish the question itself?

From Quiz Estimated Download Time

Answer: ...losing doesn't mean I'm lost."

The lyrics specified are from the band's third single, "Lost!" from their fourth CD, "Viva la Vida (or Death and All His Friends)". Taking a spot on four different Billboard charts, the song wasn't necessarily as popular as their previous single, the extremely well-received "Viva la Vida", but it still did quite well for itself. The song has quite the beat, many pounding sounds accompanied by an organ tune and strong lyrics to back. On the released single, fans may also note a difference between "Lost!", the original song, "Lost+", in which Jay-Z performs with the band, and "Lost-", an acoustic instrumental version of the song. The CD won 'Best Rock Album' at the Grammy Awards in 2009.

Rick had a really important job. He was a medical administrator at JFK Medical Foundation in Edison. Hours were long, sometimes dates had to be postponed because he couldn't get away from work. My work was more regular. I ran a bookshop in the township. I loved it, books were my world, but it wasn't challenging. I enrolled in the local campus of Rutgers and was chasing a Masters in English Literature which really was challenging. When Rick couldn't get away from work, I immersed myself in my studies. One night he arrived unannounced at my apartment, still in his work suit though his tie was crooked and his shirt tail was flapping. He suggested we drive into the city to get a late night supper at a place we could dance. Staying out till 3am on a work night was unheard of, and I paid a price that next day at work but I did not care, I loved Rick and just wanted to be with him at any and every time. The first time we did this we found a Cuban place in Greenwich Village that had great sandwiches, divine cocktails and great music for Latin dancing. It became our "go-to" place when Rick couldn't get away from work until late, which happened a lot. Too much, I remembered later.

29. Robert Frost wrote a poem titled "Christmas Trees" about a farmer who had many evergreen trees on his land. What was the main issue in the poem?

From Quiz The Eggheads' Christmas Story Book

Answer: Selling them

"Christmas Trees (A Christmas circular letter)" is a classic tale (at least to New Englanders) of a farmer matching wits with a man from "The City". The city fellow was interested in buying Christmas trees from the poem's narrator, a farmer who was not actively thinking of selling them. As negotiations began, the narrator confided to the reader that he wasn't really interested in selling the trees, and, if he did, would be embarrassed when the trees found out he was selling them to grace the homes of city people. While he knew he must eventually sell them before they were past their prime, upon finding out that the city man wanted to buy one thousand trees at three cents each, and would probably sell them for a dollar apiece (This poem was written in 1916 but the profit margin probably hasn't changed much since then!), the narrator sent the man away and wished that he could stuff the trees into envelopes and mail them to his friends as part of a Christmas letter. 30. In "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid", as the pair are being chased across the West, Butch may be feeling a little paranoid, because he keeps looking back at their pursuers and asking, "Who are those guys?" Well, who WERE those guys?

From Quiz It's Not Paranoia

Answer: Pinkerton agents

Allan Pinkerton established his detective agency in 1850. He rose to fame when he claimed to have prevented a plot to assassinate President Lincoln in 1860. After Pinkerton agents made the American West too uncomfortable for them in 1900, Cassidy (Robert Leroy Parker) and Sundance (Harry Alonzo Longabaugh) first fled to Argentina, and then to Bolivia, where they were probably killed in 1908. However, there have been claims that Cassidy had been seen in the United States as late as the 1920s.
