Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. To obtain a green pigment for their paintings, early artists utilised which chemical element to produce verdigris?

Answer: Copper

Cobalt and zinc were also used at a later date. To produce the verdigris, copper plates were suspended over a pot of vinegar. The pot was sealed and then heated until green crusts formed on the copper plates. Another method used was copper strips placed on pieces of wood, covered in acetic acid, and then buried in dung for several weeks until the verdigris developed. I prefer the former method myself.
2. To produce green sparks in fireworks, what do the manufacturers use?

Answer: Barium salts

Barium chlorate, Barium nitrate crystals and Barium chloride are used. Though it seems as though it would be logical to use copper salts to produce green fireworks, these actually produce a blue colour instead.
3. In which ancient culture was green a symbol of resurrection and immortality?

Answer: Egyptian

Whenever the god Osiris was depicted anywhere, for example, he was given a green skin. He was also shown to have a pharaoh's beard, mummy wrappings on both legs and a large crown with ostrich feathers on either side. Adore the hat. Osiris was the Egyptian god for the afterlife and the underworld, the merciful judge of those who had died, and also was responsible for rebirth, lush green vegetation and the fertile inundation of the Nile.
4. Anyone who works well with plants and produces lush growth and beautiful blooms is said to possess which skill?

Answer: A green thumb

The term "Green thumb" is usually applied to anyone who has a natural skill for gardening. In the United Kingdom, however, the expression "green fingers" is also used. People with this natural ability are said to be able to make their plants grow simply by talking to them, or playing soothing music as well. Prince Charles most definitely would approve.
5. In Persian and Sudanese poetry, women of a certain type were described as "Green women". What was this type?

Answer: Dark-skinned women

"Green women" were considered very desirable. In Persia in particular, the word for green translated as black or dark. Their poetry contains many references to dark-skinned women as being "green wheat-coloured" and possessing "green beauty". And so they do, to be sure, to be sure.
6. By the time the Dark Ages rolled around however, who or what was being portrayed in the western world as possessing a green skin?

Answer: The devil

There is one painting in particular by Austrian artist Michael Pacher (1435-1498) which captures this belief beautifully. Well, that is, if such an description could be applied to anything related to Old Nick. The painting's title is "Saint Wolfgang and the Devil", and it depicts the devil as a gruesome looking thing, somewhat like a personified praying mantis, but with wings and, most definitely, possessing a green skin.

In poetry of this period, green was associated with love and the base desires of man, though what one has got to do with the other is beyond me.
7. In China, if a man was said to be wearing a green hat, what did this signify?

Answer: He was a cuckold

And the reason for this? The husbands of ancient Chinese sex workers used to wear green head scarves. Whether this was because they were made to do so, or whether it was a form of discreet advertising, is not known for certainty. The term then evolved into meaning a man who was being cheated on by his wife.

It doesn't indicate what hat a woman wore who had a husband who was cheating on her. Surprise, surprise.
8. Which actor, famous for his portrayal of the character Dracula, wore green makeup for the role?

Answer: Bela Lugosi

Born in 1882 and dying in 1956, Lugosi was Hungarian born. He dropped out of school at the age of twelve, and after a series of small jobs, began his acting career at the age of twenty. During the first world war, he joined the Austro-Hungarian army and rose to the rank of captain.

He was subsequently awarded a medal for being wounded while posted to the Russian front. I'd prefer a medal for not being wounded myself. Eventually he ended up in New Orleans and began his film career there. Unfortunately, because he carried out his role as Dracula with such skill, he was unable to find other roles afterwards that weren't associated with horror films.

There's just no justice when you've got long teeth.
9. Considered unlucky if it's green, which outfit is associated with a particular function?

Answer: Bride's wedding gown

The colour green is often avoided for various events in the western world because of its association with misfortune. In early English folklore, it was associated with witchcraft and evil, and today, theatre costumes and green cars are thought to be unlucky as well. What piffle.
10. Which non-Christian religion considers green a good colour?

Answer: Islam

Muhammad is believed to have said that "water, greenery and a beautiful face" were three universally good things. In the Koran, people who have made it to Paradise wear outfits of fine green silk. Oh well, why not. It's as good a colour as any to wear while strumming on a harp.
