Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 2008: The United States elected the first president who wasn't a white male. Who was it?

Answer: Barack Obama

Obama became the 44th United States President, and the 43rd different person to hold the office. (Grover Cleveland was both the 22nd and 24th president.)

Obama, the son of an African immigrant and a U.S. woman, was born Aug. 4, 1961. He graduated from Harvard Law School and became a community organizer before running for the U.S. Senate in 2004. Prior to that he served in the Illinois State Senate for several years.

He won the presidency in 2008 and was re-elected in 2012.
2. 1994: Disney released a movie that followed Simba from birth through his ascension as leader of his species. What was it called?

Answer: The Lion King

"The Lion King" was one of my favorite movies growing up. The movie showed Simba, soon after birth, being announced to the jungle as the future king. His uncle, Scar, was very jealous of the young cub and really wanted to be the King.

Scar eventually killed his own brother, when he pushed him into a stampeding heard of gazelle. He then convinced Simba that it was his fault his father had died. With that on his mind, Simba left the portion of the jungle where he was set to be king.

He was gone long enough to became of full-grown lion, though the time frame was never given exactly. He returned to the area near Pride Rock, only to find that Scar was destroying his family's kingdom.

After discovering that it was Scar who killed his father, Simba fought for the throne and won back his birthright.

Now that's some movie magic.
3. 2008: Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps dominated the world and won a record number of gold medals. How many did he bring back to America?

Answer: 8

Phelps had tried for the record in 2004, but fell just short. He won eight medals in 2004, but two of them were Bronze.

In 2008 he returned to the Olympic pool and went eight for eight with gold medals. He then retired from swimming.

As the years went by his competitive nature won out and he returned for the 2012 Olympics, winning four gold and two silver medals, before once again retiring.

By 2016 he had returned to the pool again, but at 31, wasn't expected to perform at nearly the level he had before. He won five gold and a silver medal.

Phelps had also competed in the 2000 Olympics but didn't medal in his single event.

His entire career has been amazing, but 2008 was truly his magical moment.
4. Movies and TV have played a large part of my life, so the advent of the Blu-Ray disc was certainly a magical moment. Blu-Ray wasn't the only high definition video disk released around the same time though; what was the competing technology called?

Answer: HD DVD

Both technologies became available to the general public around 2006, having been developed in the few years leading up to that.

There was a format war between HD DVD and Blu Ray for the rights to release several movies after an attempt to unify the technology failed.

At the time the machines to play the various discs were quite expensive, forcing many consumers to pick one or the other based on which films were released to them.

Microsoft and founder Bill Gates was on the side of HD DVD, while Sony was on the side of Blu Ray.

That was the key factor in the format war. When the Playstation 3 was released, it included a free Blu Ray player, making the technology more accessible to more consumers. Within a year of that release HD DVDs were no longer being manufactured.
5. In 1996 the world's first cloned sheep was born. What was the name of the sheep that said hello to the world on July 5 of that year?

Answer: Dolly

Dolly was the first animal on Earth to be cloned and survive through to birth. She lived to be almost seven before dying from lung disease.

Dolly was born at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland.

Her name was a joke, being that she was cloned from a mammary gland, the sheep was named after Dolly Parton.
6. "The Walking Dead" made zombies popular across the world with a top selling comic book and two television series. Which long-running zombie comic predated "The Walking Dead"?

Answer: Deadworld

"Deadworld" was first published in 1987 and continued to be published for more than 25 years.

The series was created by Vincent Locke and Stuart Kerr, and later had major contributions from Gary Reed. Another notable contributor was James O'Barr, who created "The Crow" comics.

Eventually "Deadworld" expanded into more of the cultural zeitgeist, producing computer games, chips, soda pop and other merchandise.
7. Founded in 2005, what website is primarily used to both watch, and for users to upload their own videos?

Answer: Youtube.com

All four sites have a video capability, but only Youtube is primarily user-generated content.

Twitter is a microblogging site, and wasn't founded until years after Youtube. Amazon is a sales website that also streams movies and television. Netflix is a streaming service, but wasn't founded in 2005.

Youtube was founded in 2005, and the next year sold for more than $1.8 billion.
8. In 2011, just the second "level 7" nuclear disaster in the history of the world took place.

Answer: True

The first level 7 incident was in Chernobyl, Russia in 1986. At the time it happened it was the most deadly nuclear accident in history with 31 deaths and countless others injured during the incident.

The Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster happened 25 years later in Fukushima, Japan. There were no fatalities related directly to the meltdown, but there were several deaths involved in the evacuation of the surrounding areas. The rating of the incident is based on how much radiation is released, not human casualties.
9. In June 2016 voters in the United Kingdom chose to leave what politico-economic union in a vote unofficially called Brexit?

Answer: European Union

The Brexit vote was approved by a 51.9 percent margin in June, 2016.

The actual removal of the country from the European Union is expected to take several years as contracts and treaties have to be reviewed, rewritten and approved.

On Oct. 2, 2016, British Prime Minister Theresa May announced that she would officially trigger Article 50 (The act that will formally initiate the removal of the United Kingdom under current EU rules) no later than March of 2017, with a projected end date of March 2019.

At the time of the Brexit vote there were 28 members of the EU.
10. The Berlin Wall separated East and West Berlin from 1961-1989 and was officially torn down in 1992. Which side originally built the wall?

Answer: East

The wall was built by the communist East Germany and was officially built to stop the influence of western culture on the East German citizens. In practice the wall actually stopped the East German people from defecting to West Germany.

Deconstruction began in 1989 and was finished in 1992.
