Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the male of the mermaid species called?

Answer: a merman

Although the majority of the traditional stories feature mermaids, Scandinavian mythology has several tales of mermen and mer-people also occur in J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter books.
2. Which city has a coat of arms showing a mermaid wielding a sword and carrying a shield?

Answer: Warsaw

The figure on the coat of arms of Warsaw has developed over time from a series of mythical beasts into the mermaid we can see today which was designed in 1938 by Szczesny Kwarta. There are several interesting legends which explain how a sea creature came to symbolize a city which, although it lies on the River Vistula, is actually 350 kilometres from the coast.
3. There is a rare congenital disorder called 'Mermaid Syndrome' in which a baby is born with his or her legs fused together and the genitalia reduced. What is the correct medical term?

Answer: Sirenomelia

As rare as conjoined twins, unfortunately Sirenomelian babies usually die within days of birth and there are only three known survivors.

The other ailments do not, to my knowledge, exist.
4. Each year, on the first Saturday after the Summer Solstice, thousands come to watch this Mermaid Parade. Where?

Answer: Coney Island

Coney Island in New York has an amusement area with around 35 attractions including The Mermaid Parade, The Sideshow and The Coney Island Museum, but unlike Disneyland (for example) it is not centrally run. Each attraction is run as an individual business.
5. What was the 'Fiji Mermaid'?

Answer: a taxidermal hoax displayed by P.T. Barnum

Since the earliest times people have been prepared to pay to see "freaks of nature" in travelling shows, and P.T. Barnum's Fiji Mermaid proved such a success that at once stage there were at least seven imitations in existence, although the original was reputedly lost in a fire at Barnum's museum in the 1860s.
6. In 1872 the first English translation of "The Little Mermaid" was published. Which famous European author of fairy tales penned the original?

Answer: Hans Christian Andersen

"The Little Mermaid" was originally published in the third volume of Andersen's "Fairy Tales", which also included "The Emperor's New Clothes", in the mid 1830s. The first English translation was by H.P. Paull, and did not appear until 1872.
7. Which living creature is believed to be the cause of mermaid myths both globally and historically, as it is fond of shallow coastal waters and has been known to rise from the water with its head covered in seaweed?

Answer: all of these

The manatee and the dugong belong to the order Sirenia, class mammalia. Dugong is from the Malay "duyung" meaning lady of the sea, although sea cow is also a term used for these slow, gentle, herbivores. Fascinating creatures, well worth further reading.
8. Which company's logo features a twin-tailed mermaid?

Answer: Starbucks

The twin-tailed mermaid is a siren from Greek mythology.
The Starbucks logo has undergone three major changes since 1971. Initially, the mermaid was topless, then her hair fell around her chest, and now the chest is not even visible. The company is named after Starbuck, Captain Ahab's first mate in "Moby Dick".
9. Alexander the Great had a younger half-sister who married Cassander and, according to legend, became a mermaid after attempting to drown herself. Which present day Greek city is named after her?

Answer: Thessalonica

Thessalonica was named after Thessalonike who appears to have made a nuisance of herself to shipping for centuries afterwards, asking sailors if Alexander was still alive. Those who answered that he was still alive and ruling were allowed to sail away, those who told her the truth did not have such a happy voyage.

Mytilene is the capital of the island of Lesbos.
Ioannina means John's Town.
Theodoriana is a Greek village, but it's such a pretty name.
10. How high is the statue of The Little Mermaid in Copenhagen? (The mermaid herself, not counting the rock on which she sits).

Answer: 125 centimetres

She's called the "Little" Mermaid for a good reason!
The inspiration and the funding for the statue, sculpted by Edward Eriksen, came from Carl Jacobsen, the son of the founder of the Carlsberg brewery which has its headquarters in the Valby district of Copenhagen. The Little Mermaid was unveiled on 23rd August 1913.
