Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Shakespearean character said, "This island's mine, by Sycorax my mother."?

Answer: Caliban

Caliban is the savage slave of the enchanter Prospero in Shakespeare's last play "The Tempest." Caliban's mother Sycorax had once ruled the island in a dictatorial manner. But then she died, and the banished Duke Prospero ended up rising to power on the mystical island.
2. Which of these film roles was NOT played by Yul Brynner?

Answer: Chance the Gardener

Chance the Gardner was played by Peter Sellers in the 1979 Hal Ashby film, "Being There." Yul Brynner played Ramses II in "The Ten Commandments," (1956) King Mongkut of Siam in "The King and I," (1956) and Chris Adams in "The Magnificent Seven" (1960). Yul Brynner passed away of lung cancer on October 10, 1985.
3. The 1954 Battle of Dien Bien Phu was fought between which two groups?

Answer: France and the VietMinh

This epic battle was fought between French troops and the VietMinh - who were being financially supported by the Soviet Union and China. It was the climactic point in the first Indochina War, which ultimately led to the French defeat and withdrawal from Vietnam after almost nine years of war.
4. What is a calorie?

Answer: A unit of energy

Calories are not just in food. Anything that has energy in it has calories. So when a person eats food, they are taking in those units of energy, so that they themselves have energy. And so it is important for everyone to take in at least a certain amount of calories so that they themselves have energy. Cars also intake energy as well, in the form of gasoline, which contains calories.

But of course, that kind of food is only for vehicles and so forth.
5. A is followed by B, therefore B is caused by A. This is an example of which Latin saying?

Answer: Post hoc, ergo, propter hoc

Post hoc, ergo, propter hoc translates to, "After this, therefore because of this." It is a logical fallacy, the meaning of which is that since an event was followed by a prior event, then it must have been caused by the prior event.
6. How delicious! When making a freshly baked margherita pizza, which fresh herb do I chop up and sprinkle on top of my pie?

Answer: Basil

The story of how the margherita pizza was originally created remains a bit of a mystery. According to the most popular legend on this, it originated in 1889, twenty eight years after the unification of Italy. Queen Margherita of Savoy - wife to King Umberto I, visited Naples. During her visit, chef Raffaele Esposito of Pizzeria Brandi and his wife created a pizza resembling the colors of the Italian flag, red (tomato), white (mozzarella) and green (basil). They named it after the Queen - Pizza Margherita. But some say that the recipe for the margherita pizza predates that event by about thirty years. Whatever its origins, it is a darn good pizza.

Now I'm getting hungry.
7. Which two historical figures take center stage in the 1511 Raphael painting "The School of Athens"?

Answer: Plato and Aristotle

The two famous philosophers stand center stage, but they are not the only historical figures in the famous work of art. Other figures in the painting include Pythagoras, Euclid, Ptolemy, Zoroaster, Raphael, Alexander the Great, Epicurus, Parmenides, and many more. Socrates is also in the painting, but he doesn't draw the same attention as his student, and his student's student.
8. Which planet does the moon Titan revolve around?

Answer: Saturn

Titan is one of sixty-two known moons orbiting Saturn. Out of all of them, Titan is the largest. In fact, it's even larger than the planet Mercury. Titan's air is mostly made up of nitrogen, as well as other hydrocarbon rich elements. These give Titan its orange hue.
9. Of what type of publication is "The Book of Margery Kempe" considered to be the first example?

Answer: Autobiography in the English language

Margery Kempe is known to have dictated the book, which detailed her experiences with having visions of Christ, and going on many pilgrimages. The book is believed to have been completed in 1438. It is unclear though when and where Kempe eventually died.

But her book, although dictated and not actually written by Kempe herself, is considered the first autobiography in the English language.
10. Fill in the blank: The David Bowie song "Suffragette City," begins with the lyric "Hey man, oh, _______ you know."

Answer: leave me alone

Some info:

The song is from Bowie's 1972 album "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars."

David Bowie's birth name is David Robert Jones.

Bowie has faulty depth perception and a permanently dilated pupil in his left eye. In 1962, he was punched in the left eye by his friend George as they were fighting over a girl. George was wearing a ring at the time, which impacted Bowie's eye. Bowie stayed in the hospital for four months and had a series of operations on his eye. But the eye could not be fully repaired, causing not only the bad depth perception and the dilate pupil, but also gave him different colored eyes - even though his iris has the same blue color.
