Answer: Martin Van Buren

Van Buren was born December 5, 1782 in Colombia, New York. During his term as the eighth president, Van Buren fought for the establishment of an independent treasury system to handle Government transactions. He also blocked the annexation of Texas, fearing it would increase slave territory and bring the country to war with Mexico.
2. Movies: What was the first movie to be released with a PG-13 rating?

Answer: Red Dawn

Faced with the problem of some movies being to tame for an R rating but to violent or risqué for a PG, the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) created the PG-13 rating in 1984. "Red Dawn" starred Patrick Swayze, Charlie Sheen, Jennifer Grey, Lea Thompson, and C. Thomas Howell.
3. Saturday Night Live: Who was the first regular cast member to earn an Academy Award nomination?

Answer: Dan Aykroyd

Aykroyd was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Boolie in the 1989 film "Driving Miss Daisy". Denzel Washington won the category that year for his role in "Glory".

Answer: Columbus, Ohio

Wendy's founder Dave Thomas worked for Kentucky Fried Chicken for 12 years and was already a millionaire when he opened his first restaurant in 1969. The burger chain was named after Dave's youngest daughter, Melinda Lou, who was nicknamed Wendy by her older siblings.
5. War: Who was the first American prisoner of war to be rescued during Operation Iraqi Freedom (Gulf War 2) in 2003?

Answer: Jessica Lynch

A 19 year old supply clerk with the 507th Maintenance Company, Private First Class Jessica Lynch and her group were captured by Iraqi forces after they were ambushed on March 23, 2003. After getting reports from several informants, a group of US Navy SEALS, British Royal Marine commandos, and US Army Rangers launched a nighttime raid on Saddam Hospital in Nasiriyah, Iraq where Lynch was being held. Eleven bodies were recovered at the same time as Lynch's rescue, including her fellow company member and best friend, Private First Class Lori Ann Piestewa.

The rescue of Lynch was the first of an American POW since World War 2, and the first ever of a woman.
6. Cheers: Where did the first episode of "Cheers" rank in the Nielson television ratings?

Answer: 77th out of 77 shows

Despite the last place start, "Cheers" went on to become a television classic, running for 11 years between 1982 and 1993.
7. England: Who is recognized as the first Prime Minister of Britain?

Answer: Sir Robert Walpole

Although the actual title of prime minister was used previoulsy, it had no formal standing/recognition until 1906. Walpole, who served in his post from 1721 to 1742, is universally recognized as the first Prime Minister of Britain. Walpole is remembered for little in the way of politics or legislation, but he was the first prime minister to take up residence at 10 Downing Street, moving there in 1735.
8. Survivor: Who was the first 'castaway' voted off "Survivor: Pulau Tiga", the first of the American versions of the show?

Answer: Sonja Christopher

Sonja, the ukulele playing 63 year old from Walnut Creek, California, was the first person ever voted off an American version of "Survivor". The one million dollar prize for "Survivor: Pulau Tiga" was eventually won by 39 year old Richard Hatch.
9. Communication: What year was the first portable cell phone service offered to the public?

Answer: 1979

The first commercial cell phone service was started by NTT in Japan on December 3, 1979. By 1983, cellular phone service was available in the United States and in the late 1980's reached Europe. Originally a service primarily used by doctors and businessmen, by the late 1990's everyone from farmers to high school students could be seen using cell phones.
10. Major League Baseball: Who was the first player to sign a contract worth at least one million dollars per year?

Answer: Nolan Ryan

Nolan Ryan played his first season for the Houston Astros in 1980 after signing a 4 year, $4.5 million deal in November of 1979. The dollar amount of the contract caused a shockwave in the baseball world, many saying a million dollars a year was a ridiculous amount of money for one player. By 1983, more than 20 players were making at least a million dollars a year.

In 1990, Robin Yount of the Milwaukee Brewers was the leagues highest paid player, earning more than 3 million dollars per year. 'Catfish' Hunter had the first contract worth a total of at least one million dollars, signing a five year, $3.25 million contract with the New York Yankees before the 1975 season.

Answer: Alan Shepard

One of the original seven Mercury astronauts, Shepard made his daring 15 minute trip into space on May 5, 1961. Ten years later, Shepard would become the fifth man to walk on the moon and the first to hit a golf ball on the lunar surface. Yuri Gagarin of Russia was the first man from any country in space, lifting off on April 12, 1961.

The Philadelphia Warriors defeated the Chicago Stags 4 games to 1 in the best of 7 series in 1947. Philadelphia would win the championship again in 1956, defeating the Fort Wayne Pistons. The Warriors would move to San Francisco in 1962, and eventually become known as the Golden State Warriors.

NB. The BAA Championship although prior to the NBA is recognized as part of the NBA, much like the first Superbowl was not even called Superbowl, but the Packers are recognized as champions of Superbowl I.
13. Clothing: What brand were the first blue jeans commercially sold to the public?

Answer: Levi's

In 1872, a Nevada tailor named Jacob Davis offered to sell an inventive design to Levi Strauss, the owner of a dry goods store in San Francisco that also sold fancy linens. Davis placed metal rivets at the points of strain-pocket corners and the base of the fly, a unique design that he didn't have the money to patent. Luckily for Davis, Strauss suggested that he pay for the design, but that they patent it together.

The patent was granted on May 20, 1873 and the first blue jeans went on sale soon after.
14. Rodeo: Who was the first PBR World Champion?

Answer: Adriano Moraes

Professional Bull Riders, Inc. was founded in 1992 and crowned their first World Champion in 1994. Unlike any other rodeo or bull riders organization, the PBR was founded, owned, and operated by the bull riders themselves. By the beginning of the 21st century, there were more than 700 bull riders from the United States, Canada, Brazil, and Australia with PBR memberships.
15. The Oscars: Who was the first African American to win an Academy Award?

Answer: Hattie McDaniel

There were many firsts in Hattie McDaniel's career. An actress and singer, Hattie was the first African American to sing on network radio in the United States. In 1931, she went to Hollywood to seek out a movie career. After a few parts as an extra, she started to get larger roles, including a part in the 1937 film "Saratoga" in which she sang with Clark Gable.

It was her role as Mammy in the 1939 classic "Gone With the Wind" that won her the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. In 1952, Hattie took over the starring role in the television sitcom "Beulah", the first sitcom to feature an African American as the title charecter. Hattie died on October 2, 1952 and was the first African American to be buried in Los Angeles' Rosedale Cemetery.
