Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What color might red be touching on the skin of a deadly snake?

Answer: yellow

There is a saying used to determine whether a snake is deadly. There are different ways of saying it, one of which is, "Red by yellow, bite a fellow. Red by black, venom lack". Coral snakes are an example of a type of snake where the red part is by the yellow part, and thus it is considered a deadly snake.
2. Where is the color red in a primary rainbow?

Answer: outermost wavelength

The red is the outermost color seen in a primary rainbow. Since it is the outermost of the seven colors in a rainbow, it is also the longest. From longest to shortest, the colors are: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. An acronym to remember the colors is "Roy G. Biv".

A secondary rainbow occurs when a raindrop is reflected twice instead of just once. The colors are the reverse of a primary rainbow, which would mean that red is the innermost color.
3. Which color is NOT a shade of red?

Answer: cyan

Cyan is a shade of blue. It's about halfway between the blue and the green portions of the color spectrum. Maroon is a pure dark red color. Magenta is a color that is somewhere between red and blue. Vermillion is an opaque red pigment. Maroon is darker than vermillion, which in turn is darker than magenta.
4. In which game is there not a red playing piece?

Answer: Monopoly

"Monopoly" does not contain red playing pieces, only properties with cards and/or hotels that are red. In "The Game of Life", there are six cars that can be used as playing pieces, one of which is red. "Cranium" and "Trouble" also have tokens that are used as playing pieces, and red is one of the several colors used.
5. "The Red-Headed League" is a story written by which author?

Answer: Arthur Conan Doyle

"The Red-Headed League", published in 1891, is a short story written by Arthur Conan Doyle, and is one of the books featuring Sherlock Holmes. This story is second in Doyle's list of twelve favorite Sherlock Holmes stories that he wrote (the number one position is "The Adventure of the Speckled Band").

In the story, Jabez Wilson comes to Sherlock Holmes to discover the truth behind the mysterious dissolving of the Red-Headed League, a business of which he was once a part.
6. Which Biblical character is associated with the Red Sea?

Answer: Moses

After the ten plagues of Egypt, Moses led the Jews out of slavery in Egypt. Moses approached the Red Sea and used his staff to part it. The sea separated into two, allowing safe passage for all of the Jews. Once they were all through, the walls of the sea came down on all of the pursuing Egyptians. Moses and the Jews then continued their journey to the Promised Land (although Moses wouldn't enter it, because he decided to strike a rock rather than speak to it, which is what God told him to do).
7. A red star is the hottest star type.

Answer: False

A red star is one of the coldest types of star (even though it's still quite hot). The temperature of the star at its surface is between 1,000 and 3,700 Kelvin. A blue star is the hottest star type. Stars are different colors depending on how hot they are, and how the hotness is based on the star's age.
8. Which country's flag does not have any red in it?

Answer: Argentina

Argentina's flag contains three horizontal stripes: the first and third being light blue, and the middle stripe being white. The blue and the white represent the colors used in the Argentinean Revolution with Spain. There is also a symbol (a sun) in the center of the white stripe. The sun on the flag was based on the symbol of the Incan god of the sun, Inti.

Russia's flag has three stripes; the bottom stripe is red. Most of North Korea's flag is red. The circle in the center of South Korea's flag is red and blue.
9. Red is one of the colors associated with which American holiday?

Answer: Valentine's Day

The two colors associated with Valentine's Day are red and pink. Red is associated with Valentine's Day, because according to the love poem, roses (usually considered the best gift to give someone) are red. Pink is associated with Valentine's Day, because pink is a shade of red. (It's a mix of red and white.) Valentine's Day is associated with St. Valentine, who died on February 14.

There is very little known about St. Valentine.
10. Which television show has a character named Red John?

Answer: The Mentalist

In "The Mentalist", Red John is a serial killer and is Patrick Jane's main enemy. Red John killed several people, mainly females, including Patrick's wife Angela and daughter Charlotte. After killing his victims, Red John draws a smiley face on the wall using blood from his victims.

In the case of Angela, he also painted her toenails red. In "Strawberries and Cream", it was believed that Patrick had shot and killed Red John. However, it was later revealed that the person was not really Red John. Most episodes of the show contain the word red ("Lady in Red") or something to do with red. Examples include "Ruby Slippers", "Blood and Sand", and "18-5-4" (r = 18, e = 5, d = 4; therefore, 18-5-4 = red).

Quiz-writing can be a difficult venture, more or less, but some of our brave authors opted in to receive a title in May 2012 that tested their focus. In addition to receiving a title with the word 'More' or 'Less' in the name, they were also restricted for category choices; those with a 'More' title had to use one of three categories given with the title and those with a 'Less' title had to use anything but the three categories given.
