Red Trivia Questions

1. In 2016, feminist filmmaker Cassie Jaye made a film called 'The Red Pill'. It documents how her feelings about the Men's Movement changed over time. What film inspired the name she chose?

From Quiz
Ready for Red?

Answer: The Matrix

"You take the blue pill... the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill... you stay in Wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes." The expression 'to take the red pill' comes from the 1999 movie "The Matrix", when Morpheus offers Neo a choice of pills. The red one will bring him a whole new understanding, while the blue one keeps him unenlightened. Cassie Jaye used it as the title of her really interesting film because it documents her gradual awakening to the legitimate concerns voiced by the men's movement that she had not expected at all. The expression has also been adopted by conspiracy theorists, for whom 'taking the red pill' means waking up to the realization, for example, that the world is controlled by aliens under the direction of Jay Z. In the 2020s it's morphed into just 'pilled'.

2. The first Sherlock Holmes detective story, "A Study in Scarlet", begins in 1881 when Dr. Watson returns to London from what war?

From Quiz Why Not Try Something in Scarlet?

Answer: The Second Anglo-Afghan War

In July 1878, Russia sent an envoy to Afghanistan. Fearing Russian influence in the area, England demanded that Afghanistan accept British diplomats. When the Afghans refused, England invaded. By the spring of 1879, the British controlled much of Afghanistan. The Treaty of Gandamark appeared to end the war; however, in September 1879 an uprising took place in Kabul. During the spring of 1880, General Frederick Roberts, after marching his troops from Kabul to Kandahar, defeated the Afghans in a decisive battle and this engagement ended the Second Anglo-Afghan war.

3. The impossibly convoluted 1985 American comedic motion picture "The Man with One Red Shoe" was a remake of a 1972 French comedic film of what name?

From Quiz Things You May Have Red, 3rd Blush

Answer: Le Grand Blond avec une chassure noire

The director of the CIA is set up by his deputy director to take the fall for agency-protected drug smuggling. An innocent concert violinist is swept up into a cyclone of nefarity, beginning with his appearance in an airport wearing one black and one red shoe. From there, it gets complex. The French version starred Pierre Richard and Mireille Darc; the American remake starred Tom Hanks and Dabney Coleman.

4. Lee Marvin starred in a 1980 motion picture based on a novel by Samuel Fuller which was based on his experiences with what military organization during World War II?

From Quiz Things You May Have Red, 2nd Blush

Answer: Big Red One

The Big Red One is the nickname of the United States Army's First Infantry Division, so-called because the shoulder patch worn by members is a red numeral one. The First is the oldest continuously serving Regular Army division. Fuller directed the shooting of his own script. He was awarded the Silver Star, the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart for his service.

5. Based on a novel by Tom Clancy, in which 1990 motion picture did Soviet submarine captain Marko Ramius (Sean Connery) play cat-and-mouse with US CIA analyst Jack Ryan (Alec Baldwin) over an innovative nuclear missile submarine?

From Quiz Things You May Have Red, 1st Blush

Answer: The Hunt for Red October

Clancy's 1984 novel "The Hunt for Red October" introduced protagonist Jack Ryan who appeared in many subsequent novels: "Patriot Games" (1987), "The Cardinal of the Kremlin" (1988), "Clear and Present Danger" (1989), "The Sum of All Fears" (1991) and so on. Ryan was played by Baldwin in "Red October" but also by Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck, and Chris Pine in later films. The premise is that a Soviet submarine captain decides to defect to the West and take a Typhoon-class boomer submarine with him. The boat is equipped with a "tractor drive" which is undetectable by passive sonar.

6. Robert Fripp was the lead guitarist for which "red" rock group?

From Quiz Red All About It

7. Which college and professional football player was known as "The Galloping Ghost"?

From Quiz Call Me Red

Answer: Red Grange

Chicago sportswriter Warren Brown gave Harold Edward Grange his nickname because of his speed and elusive running style. When his third season was over, he dropped out of school and joined the professional Chicago Bears. He played pro football through 1934. He then became a broadcaster on radio and television from 1934-1969. He is a member of both the NFL Hall of Fame and the College Football Hall of Fame.

10. Many people all over the world associate this item with the color red. However, if I mention some names of specific varieties of this item, can you recognize the item: Bismarck, Gala, Jester, Queen Cox, Rome Beauty, and Saturn?

From Quiz Paint Fun Trivia Red!

Answer: apple

While many apples are various shades of green and yellow, those that are red have that color because their outer layers contain a pigment called anthocyanin, which can appear as red, purple, or blue, depending on the pH of the species of apple. Red apple trees possess an evolutionary benefit because the bright colors attract pollinators. Of course, they also attract consumers.

11. Which location's National Hockey League team does NOT typically wear red anywhere on its uniforms?

12. 'I See Red' was a quirky pop song of the late 1970s. Which group from New Zealand, featuring Neil and Tim Finn, released this song as a single from their album 'Frenzy'?

From Quiz I See Red!

Answer: Split Enz

The innovative new wave band Split Enz was formed originally in 1972 as an acoustic folk group by Phil Judd and Tim Finn (and later joined by Tim's brother Neil). They played a wide variety of musical styles ranging from pop to swing and punk. The band was always visually striking, with bizarre outfits and strange haircuts (strange even for the late 1970s and early '80s!). The band's biggest success came with the single 'I Got You' in 1980. After nine studio and three live albums and a plethora of line-up changes, the band called it quits in 1984. However, reunion tours continued regularly over the next two decades. They were inducted into the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) Hall of Fame in 2005. The highly successful band Crowded House featured several Split Enz alumni including the Finn brothers and drummer Paul Hester.

13. Captain Scarlet was the lead character in a 1960s British sci-fi TV programme created by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson and produced using marionette puppets. What was the full title of the show?

From Quiz Ten Shades of Red

Answer: Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons

'Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons' is about the eponymous character's adventures while defending the Earth from attacks by the Mysterons - a race of sentient computers based on Mars. Captain Scarlet worked for a worldwide security organisation called Spectrum. The programme was first broadcast in 1967 and was one of many puppet-based series, including 'Thunderbirds', created by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson (a husband and wife team) in the 1950s and 1960s. The Andersons pioneered a technique known as 'supermarionation' to synchronise movements of the puppets' mouths with the recorded dialogue and 'Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons' was the sixth of their series in which it was applied. Scarlet is a bright shade of red with a slight orangey tint. The term 'scarlet' was originally used in Middle English to refer to brightly coloured cloth that was often, but not always, red.

14. The adage "Red sky at night, sailors delight" has some basis in fact, as the light of the setting sun is diffused by large amounts of dust, indicating which type of good-weather system is to the west (upwind) of the observer?

From Quiz Red Sky at Night, Sailor's Delight

Answer: High pressure

High pressure is usually associated with nice weather, clear of clouds and rain. In the middle latitudes of the northern hemisphere, winds generally move weather systems from west to east; a sailor seeing indications of high pressure to his west would expect better weather with the approaching system.

15. In astronomy, stars are categorised by colour. Our sun is a yellow dwarf, but how would a red dwarf star compare to the Sun?

From Quiz Red Is All Around Us

Answer: Smaller and cooler

Most red dwarfs are less than half the size of our sun. They also comprise more than 70% of the stars in the known universe, but most are not visible because of their size. Their coolness, however, ensures that they will exist a lot longer than their larger and hotter brothers and sisters, as they are burning a lot more slowly.

16. The English "Wars of the Roses" pitted two families against each other, and they were famously represented by a red rose and a white rose. Which ultimately victorious family wore the red rose?

From Quiz Passionate Red

Answer: Lancaster

The Lancastrian line used the red rose, and the Yorks wore the white during the 15th-century Wars of the Roses. Both of these English royal houses derived from the earlier Plantagenet line, and when they were united after the war's conclusion, the joined white/red rose was used to symbolize the new Tudor dynasty, born of the reunion of the two lines.

17. What color might red be touching on the skin of a deadly snake?

From Quiz More of the Shame

Answer: yellow

There is a saying used to determine whether a snake is deadly. There are different ways of saying it, one of which is, "Red by yellow, bite a fellow. Red by black, venom lack". Coral snakes are an example of a type of snake where the red part is by the yellow part, and thus it is considered a deadly snake.

18. Many artists have recorded "Red, Red Wine", but who originally wrote and recorded the song in 1968?

From Quiz Red, Red Wine

Answer: Neil Diamond

Neil Diamond composed and released "Red, Red Wine" in 1968. It reached number 68 on the Billboard Hot 100 in that same year. UB40's softer reggae version of the song went all the way and reached number one on the UK charts in 1983. Everyone knows that red wine contains antioxidants that are beneficial to your health, but one study has shown that it may also stave off the development of Alzheimer's disease. Since I'm not a great fan of red wine, I'll stick with Sudoku and Trivia.

19. In what countries do brides traditionally wear red wedding dresses?

From Quiz I See Red

Answer: China and India

In China, red is associated with loyalty, honor, success, fortune, fertility, happiness and passion. Brides wear red wedding dresses and wedding gifts are wrapped in red paper. In India, red is associated with heat, fertility and sexuality and also symbolises a married woman. Red is the traditional colour of a wedding dress.

20. Chris de Burgh had a hit song with this title. Name that tune!

From Quiz Seeing Red

Answer: Lady in Red

Chris de Burgh was born on October 15, 1948 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He has been known for many beautiful songs. The song, "Lady in Red" was released in 1986. Originally the song was titled "The Way You Look Tonight" but with a song that already had the title he had to change it. He started to create this song after he and his wife, Diane, had an argument, but then Chris never completed the song. About five months later, he noticed how great Diane looked in red and that gave him the inspiration to put the finishing touches to the song. The song became a hit and went to the #1 position in 25 countries.

21. Who or what is a Redshank?

From Quiz Red Alert...

Answer: A wading bird with red legs

Aligot is delicious. It's pureed potato with garlic, Cantal cheese, and other fattening things. Avoid any recipe that asks for Brie or Camembert or chives - or onions. Not real Aligot. Not a tribe, either. Nor was there an order of St Muiris, if he ever existed anyway (outside this quiz, that is), and I don't think any friars had yellow habits. Dirty habits, maybe, until they got them washed. Birdwatchers aren't keen on redshanks, because they're far too easily set off from a distance. When this happens, up goes the whole lot. Including the curlew sandpiper and the little stint you thought you'd spotted sitting there...

22. Is the American Red Cross part of the US government?

From Quiz Seeing 'RED'

Answer: No

It works independently of the government, but works closely with government agencies such as the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) during times of major crises.

23. When they hear about a "red wave" coming, some Americans are really happy and other Americans are really blue. What does 'red' stand for here?

From Quiz Ready for Red?

Answer: The Republican Party

The terms 'red', for the American Republican party and 'blue' for the Democrats solidified around the year 2000. There are 'red states' and 'blue states' and a 'red wave' would mean a whole lot of Republican votes. It all has to do with television and those big light-up electoral maps on election night. But the idea of colourising political parties started much earlier. Some time around the end of the Civil War, the Republican Party became associated with Union blue. In 1976, NBC started using an electoral map where states that had gone Republican were blue, and the Democrat ones were red. Over the years different networks used different combinations, and it was only during the election year 2000 that they synchronized with Republican red and Democrat blue. For boomers like this quiz-maker, however, the term 'red wave' might bring back memories of a time when 'red' meant something really different.

24. In 2010, Scarlett Johansson won the Tony Award for Outstanding Actress in what Arthur Miller play?

From Quiz Why Not Try Something in Scarlet?

26. Hugh Williams and Jimmy Kennedy wrote a song in 1935 made popular by Bing Crosby, Guy Lombardo, and Louis Armstrong respectively. It described "Red __________ in the __________".

From Quiz Things You May Have Red, 3rd Blush

Answer: Sails / Sunset

"Red Sails in the Sunset" is about a lover on shore awaiting his wedding day with his lady on board a boat at sea. Kennedy wrote the lyric while staying at Portstewart in County Londonderry in Northern Ireland, inspired by the red sails of the yacht Kitty of Coleraine which he often saw there. The song was revived (and charted) in 1951 by Nat King Cole, also in 1957 by Tab Hunter, also in 1958 by Paul Anka, also in 1960 by The Platters, also in 1963 by Fats Domino, and by Dean Martin in 1968 and Perry Como in 1969.
