The expression 'to take the red pill' comes from the 1999 movie "The Matrix", when Morpheus offers Neo a choice of pills. The red one will bring him a whole new understanding, while the blue one keeps him unenlightened. Cassie Jaye used it as the title of her really interesting film because it documents her gradual awakening to the legitimate concerns voiced by the men's movement that she had not expected at all. The expression has also been adopted by conspiracy theorists, for whom 'taking the red pill' means waking up to the realization, for example, that the world is controlled by aliens under the direction of Jay Z. In the 2020s it's morphed into just 'pilled'.

In July 1878, Russia sent an envoy to Afghanistan. Fearing Russian influence in the area, England demanded that Afghanistan accept British diplomats. When the Afghans refused, England invaded. By the spring of 1879, the British controlled much of Afghanistan. The Treaty of Gandamark appeared to end the war; however, in September 1879 an uprising took place in Kabul. During the spring of 1880, General Frederick Roberts, after marching his troops from Kabul to Kandahar, defeated the Afghans in a decisive battle and this engagement ended the Second Anglo-Afghan war.

He played for the University of Illinois for three seasons, 1923-1925, and was named an All-America halfback each year. When his third season was over, he dropped out of school and joined the professional Chicago Bears. He played pro football through 1934. He then became a broadcaster on radio and television from 1934-1969. He is a member of both the NFL Hall of Fame and the College Football Hall of Fame.

The innovative new wave band Split Enz was formed originally in 1972 as an acoustic folk group by Phil Judd and Tim Finn (and later joined by Tim's brother Neil). They played a wide variety of musical styles ranging from pop to swing and punk. The band was always visually striking, with bizarre outfits and strange haircuts (strange even for the late 1970s and early '80s!). The band's biggest success came with the single 'I Got You' in 1980. After nine studio and three live albums and a plethora of line-up changes, the band called it quits in 1984. However, reunion tours continued regularly over the next two decades. They were inducted into the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) Hall of Fame in 2005. 'Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons' is about the eponymous character's adventures while defending the Earth from attacks by the Mysterons - a race of sentient computers based on Mars. Captain Scarlet worked for a worldwide security organisation called Spectrum. The programme was first broadcast in 1967 and was one of many puppet-based series, including 'Thunderbirds', created by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson (a husband and wife team) in the 1950s and 1960s. He started to create this song after he and his wife, Diane, had an argument, but then Chris never completed the song. About five months later, he noticed how great Diane looked in red and that gave him the inspiration to put the finishing touches to the song. But the idea of colourising political parties started much earlier. Some time around the end of the Civil War, the Republican Party became associated with Union blue. In 1976, NBC started using an electoral map where states that had gone Republican were blue, and the Democrat ones were red. Over the years different networks used different combinations, and it was only during the election year 2000 that they synchronized with Republican red and Democrat blue.
