Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the Morse code for the number 200?

Answer: ..--- ----- -----

This is simply the Morse code for the numbers 2 and 0. The sequence ..--- represents the number 2, and the sequence ----- represents the number 0. When these are combined, they make the number 200 (one 2 and two zeros).
2. What is the German word for 200?

Answer: zweihundert

In German, "two" is "zwei" and "hundred" is "hundert". When these are combined, they mean "two hundred". In German, einhundert is "one hundred", dreihundert is "three hundred", and vierhundert is "four hundred".
3. Here's a little math about the number 200. What do you get when you multiply one quarter of 200 times one fifth of 200?

Answer: 2,000

For this one, you first have to discover one quarter of 200. To do this, you can multiply 200 by 1/4. This results in 50. You need to do the same for one fifth of 200. When you multiply 200 by 1/5, the result is 40. Then, multiply those two values together: 50 x 40 = 2,000.
4. What is the 200th largest island in the world by area, not including continental land masses? It sounds like a good spot to stop for a refreshing drink.

Answer: Margarita Island, Colombia

Margarita Island is in the Magdalena River in inland Colombia. It is also known as Mompox Island. Its size of 2,100 sq km puts it at the 200th largest on earth, right between Alor Island in Indonesia (2,120 sq km) and Lewis and Harris Island in the United Kingdom (2,086 sq km). Of the other options in this question, Maui is the 214th largest island in the world. Manitoulin Island is the 174th largest island in the world. Tenerife is the 208th largest island in the world.
5. Which western African country was admitted to the United Nations with the acceptance of United Nations Security Council Resolution 200?

Answer: Gambia

Resolution 200 was unanimously adopted by the United Nations Security Council on March 15, 1965. Gambia was formally admitted to the United Nations on September 21, 1965. Ghana joined the United Nations on March 8, 1957. Burundi is in east Africa. That country joined the UN on September 18, 1962. Kenya, also in Eastern Africa, was admitted to the UN on December 16, 1963.
6. A lūstrum was the period between censuses in Ancient Rome. This means that there are are 200 lūstrums in a millennium.

Answer: True

The word lūstrum comes from Ancient Rome where censuses were taken every five years. The time between each was known as the lūstrum. There are 1,000 years in a millennium. When that value is divided by the number of years in a lūstrum, you end up with 200.
7. What is the binary code for the number 200?

Answer: 11001000

Binary code is a system used in computing or electronics to represent digits, letters and characters in programming. To figure out the number involved, you first multiply each digit to the corresponding value of 2 and add them up. The value of 2 is first taken to the power of its place in the series. If there are seven digits (as here with 11001000), the first value of 2 is taken to the 7th power, the second value is taken to the sixth power, and so on.

In this case, 1x2^7 + 1x2^6 + 0x2^5 + 0x2^4 + 1x2^3 + 0x2^2 + 0x2^1 + 0x2^0.

Then, solve the powers: 1x128 + 1x64 + 0x32 + 0x16 + 1x8 + 0x4 + 0x2 + 0x1 = 128 + 64 + 0 + 0 + 8 + 0 + 0 + 0. Finally, add up the values that you have calculated: 128 + 64 + 0 + 0 + 8 + 0 + 0 + 0 = 200.
8. How many minutes are in 200 seconds?

Answer: 3 minutes, 20 seconds

There are sixty seconds in a minute. Three times sixty is 180, so there are 180 seconds in three minutes. This leaves an additional 20 seconds to make it up to 200 seconds. For the other options, there are 180 seconds in three minutes (as mentioned). In 2 minutes, 40 seconds, there are 160 seconds. In 4 minutes, 50 seconds, there are 290 seconds.
9. In geometry, if a square is presented with sides of 200 metres each, what is the total area of the square?

Answer: 40,000 square metres

To get the area of a four-sided shape with equal lengths along each side, you have to square the the length of one side. So, in this case, the total area is 200^2, or 200 x 200, or 40,000 square metres.
10. Is there an asteroid with the number 200 in its name?

Answer: Yes

200 Dynamene is actually the asteroid with the number 200 in its name. This asteroid was discovered at the Litchfield Observatory in New York State on July 27, 1879. It was discovered by Christian Heinrich Friedrich Peters who was well known for discovering asteroids. From 1861 and 1889 he discovered 48 asteroids.

In 2006, data about 200 Dynamene was discovered that suggests that this asteroid is about 130 km in diameter.
