Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the word for a polygon with 10,000 sides?

Answer: Myriagon

*In geometry a polygon is traditionally a plane figure that is bounded by a closed path or circuit, composed of a finite sequence of straight line segments. These segments are called its edges or sides, and the points where two edges meet are the polygon's vertices or corners. The interior of the polygon is sometimes called its body. A polygon is a 2-dimensional example of the more general polytope in any number of dimensions.*
Polygons are usually classified by the number of sides they have, and are give different names. The myriagon is a polygon with 10,000 sides.

2. Please tell me which state in the U.S. is nicknamed "Land Of 10,000 Lakes"?

Answer: Minnesota

The nickname is actually true. At last count there were 11,842 lakes in the state of Minnesota that were 10 acres or larger. It also has over 6500 natural rivers and streams.
3. A United States Ten Thousand Dollar Bill has a picture of a person on it, as does every other denomination of U.S. paper money. Who graces the $10,000 bill?

Answer: Salmon P. Chase

Salmon P. Chase was Secretary of The Treasury under President Abraham Lincoln. His likeness appears on the $10,000 bill which is not in general circulation, but is used in the banking industry. McKinley's picture is on the $500 bill, Wilson is on the $100,000 Bank Transfer Note (which was used for Federal Reserve transactions between banks), and James Madison adorns the $5000 bill. Currently in the U.S. the largest bill in general circulation is $100.
4. The game show "$10,000 Pyramid" debuted in 1973 in the U.S. Who was the host?

Answer: Dick Clark

It was Dick Clark who hosted the original show when it debuted in 1973. $10,000 was the top prize at that time. The object of the game was to outscore your opponent by getting a series of one word clues from your partner on items with a common theme. For example, if the subject was "Things in a Barber Shop", the list would probably include things like comb, brush, razor, shaving cream, etc, and your partner would have to give one word clues for you to guess these items.

Afterward, the winner and partner would proceed to the pyramid, where they would have to complete six subjects in less than 60 seconds to win the money. Clark hosted the show as "The $10,000 Pyramid" through 1976.

It then became the "$20,000 Pyramid" (inflation). It eventually became the "$100,000 Pyramid" in the early 1990s.

It is one of the most popular game shows of all time, and still can be seen in syndication. Clark hosted the show from its inception until 1988.
5. A television documentary titled "Vietnam, The Ten Thousand Day War" was produced and released for viewing in 1980. Which country was responsible for this production?

Answer: Canada

This production was produced by Canadian Michael MacLear in 1980 and documents the history of the Vietnam conflict from its earliest stages in 1945, to its conclusion in 1975. MacLear visited North Vietnam during production and was granted permission to film there.

He had the distinction of being the first journalist of any kind from the West to be allowed access to the area since the conclusion of the war. British audiences saw the production in 1984 and 1985. The series was also able to be viewed on the History Channel in the U.S.

By the way, 10,000 days is equal to 27.4 years.
6. "10,000 Maniacs" are a rock band that had some success in the 1980s and 1990s. What country do they hail from?

Answer: United States

The group was formed in 1981 in upstate Jamestown, New York, and was originally called Still Life. The group was led by Natalie Merchant. Their music was considered Alternative. They are most well known for their hit "Because the Night" in 1993.
7. In 2007, a U.S. professional baseball team became the first in history to lose 10,000 games. What team was it?

Answer: Philadelphia Phillies

Not only were the Phillies the first in baseball, they were the first in professional sports history to lose that many games. Of course, they had been around longer than just about any other team, so this 'record' should be taken with a grain of salt.
8. To what city would a letter go if you addressed it with the zip-code 10001?

Answer: New York City

Zip-codes are the 5 digit numbers that you use to address letters and package so they go to a designated area of the country. Generally speaking the lowest numbers are the East coast of the U.S. and the numbers get higher as you move further west. New York City postal zones start with the number 10001, and go up to 10292. These numbers would be for Manhattan only.
9. In what year did the Dow Jones Industrial average close above 10,000 for the first time?

Answer: 1999

The Dow Jones Industrial Average, commonly known as The Dow, closed at 10006.78 on March 29, 1999 marking the first time in history that the average closed above the 10,000 mark. The Dow is an average of 30 of the largest and most widely held stocks on the New York Stock Exchange. Companies are occasionally moved in and out of the average based on market conditions and most recent performance, but the number of stocks on their listing has been fixed at 30 since 1928.
10. What is the "Year 10,000 Problem" concerned with?

Answer: Computer glitches

The "Year 10,000 Problem" is similar to what "Y2K" was perceived to be in the year 2000. Its major concern is that of possible software bugs in relation to the switch from a four digit year to a five digit year. However, many historians and technology engineers do not expect this to be a major problem because the chances of a similar technology to what we have today are practically nil.
