Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The highest score achievable with three darts on a darts board is 180. What is another common term for this score?

Answer: Ton 80

A ton is an alternative term for 100. There was a brief period during the 1990s when a quad ring was added, leading to a possible maximum three-dart score of 240. It lasted a couple of years in professional tournament play.
2. 180 degrees would be due south if you were reading a compass. "Due South" was a 1990s TV series. Who played the lead character Constable Benton Fraser?

Answer: Paul Gross

This Canadian crime series ran for 67 episodes in the latter half of the 1990s. Paul Gross is a Canadian actor, singer, writer and director probably best known for his role in "Due South" and for his 2008 film "Passchendaele", which he wrote, co-produced, directed and starred in.

The other actors all played parts in the series.
3. What is the name given to the phenomenon where the Earth's magnetic poles swap around?

Answer: Geomagnetic reversal

The earth's magnetic field 'flips' on average every 450,000 years. The last one, the Brunhes-Matuyama reversal, occurred 780,000 years ago. The transition is estimated to take between 1,000 and 10,000 years.

Having said that, there was a brief one about 41,000 years ago called the Laschamp event, which lasted 440 years. The Laschamp event is classed as a geomagnetic excursion, where there is a dramatic short term reduction in field strength rather than a more permanent change in the large-scale orientation of the field.

The interval between such reversals is known as a chronozone or a chron. This term applies to other events such as the period between extinctions. A magnetic anomaly is a local variation in the Earth's magnetic field.
4. In what profession is the 180-degree rule used?

Answer: Film making

This is a basic rule of thumb for positioning the camera to ensure that one character is always framed to the right of the second character during on-screen dialogue. It can help the audience where, for example, there are close-up shots or off-screen action. Shooting the round is where the 180-degree rule is broken and actors are filmed from all sides.
5. 180 degrees celsius is quite a common setting for non-American stoves. The temperature unit is named after Anders Celsius. Where did he come from?

Answer: Sweden

Anders Celsius was a Swedish astronomer, physicist and mathematician. He proposed a scientifically-based temperature scale based on the freezing (100 degrees) and boiling points (0 degrees) of water. Carl Linnaeus reversed the scale in 1745, a year after Celsius died.

Why is 180 degrees celsius so popular in cooking circles? It provides a moderate oven suitable for a wide range of foods. It equates to around 350 degrees fahrenheit.
6. "180 Degrees South: Conquerors of the Useless" was 2010 documentary retracing a 1968 expedition to Patagonia. Where is Patagonia?

Answer: Chile

The original expedition by climbers Yvon Chouinard and Doug Tompkins took an overland route to this wilderness area of South America. The documentary followed Jeff Johnson who chose to go by sea and had the target of climbing Corcovado Volcano. He meets with Chouinard and Tompkins in Patagonia and promotes a conservationist message.

"Conquistadors of the Useless", the 1961 autobiography of French climber Lionel Terray, inspired part of the documentary's title. Monte Fitz Roy, a technically challenging and photogenic peak in Patagonia, was first climbed by Terray in 1952. Chouinard and Tompkins climbed a new route on it during their expedition in 1968.
7. 180 was a leap year and saw the death of the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius, a practitioner of Stoicism. Where does the philosophy originate?

Answer: Greece

This Hellenistic school of philosophy was found in the Third century BC by Zeno of Citium and was popular in the Roman and Greek world until the Third century AD. Marcus Aurelius was the author of 'Meditations', the most significant source available today on the philosophy.

Marcus Aurelius was the Emperor in the 2000 film "Gladiator" who was killed by his son Commodus. In real life, he died of natural causes.
8. Just under 180 million dollars was the price paid for which Picasso work in 2015?

Answer: Women of Algiers

The painting was bought in 2015 by Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani, a former prime minister of Qatar, for a record price. Picasso became obsessed with Eugène Delacroix's "Femmes d'Alger dans leur appartement" (1834) and painted 15 versions of it including this one - "Les Femmes d'Alger (Version O)" in 1955.
9. "180" is the name of the debut album of the Palma Violets. Where does the name of this British Indie pop band come from?

Answer: A sweet made by Swizzels Matlow

The British-made sweet (Parma Violets) is a violet-flavoured tablet, taking its name from the parma violet flower. The band's name (spelt with an 'l', not an 'r') is said to be derived from the sweet. Why an 'l'? There was already a Scottish band using the 'r' version.
10. What is the name of an angle greater than 180 degrees?

Answer: Reflex

A bit of maths to end with. A reflex angle is more than 180 degrees but less than 360 degrees. An obtuse angle lies between 90 and 180 degrees and an acute angle is less than 90 degrees. A straight angle is 180 degrees, in other words a straight line.
