Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. General My kylie will return to me, if I throw it as I should I shape it with a small sharp stone, I make it out of....

Answer: Wood

Boomerangs, also known as 'kylies' by some tribal groups, are used for hunting, cleaning, and warfare. Though particularly identified with Australia, boomerang-like objects have been found across Europe and parts of Asia. They have also been made from tusk or bone, but most commonly, wood is the preferred material.
2. World The Aussie national anthem words can be sung to the tune of 'Gilligan's Island' theme song - the first line can you croon?

Answer: Australians all, let us rejoice for we are young and free

The first verse of the Australian national anthem is:

"Australians all let us rejoice, For we are young and free;
We've golden soil and wealth for toil; Our home is girt by sea;
Our land abounds in nature's gifts Of beauty rich and rare;
In history's page, let every stage Advance Australia Fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing, Advance Australia Fair."

There is a subsequent verse but it is rarely sung.

The song was adopted as the National Anthem after a 1977 plebiscite preferred it over 'Waltzing Matilda' and the then current anthem, 'God Save the Queen'.
3. Literature Andrew Barton Paterson (of Snowy River fame) Was labelled for an instrument: now, please tell me what name!

Answer: Banjo

A.B. (Banjo) Paterson was born in New South Wales in the middle of the 19th century, and was a prolific writer of iconic poems that reflect the Australian bush and life at the time. Best known of his poems include 'Waltzing Matilda', 'Clancy of the Overflow' and 'The Man from Snowy River'; my personal favourite is 'The Man from Ironbark.'
4. Movies What movie tells us of the part that Aussies played in war, In Turkey, what did we defend, our young and hapless corps?

Answer: Gallipoli

The 1981 movie 'Gallipoli' was directed by Peter Weir and was set in Turkey on the peninsula of that name. It tells the story of the small stretch of land that was defended by the Australian diggers and their New Zealand counterparts. The ground was renamed 'Anzac Cove' by the Turks in honour of the gallantry of the troops.
5. Humanities Australian lingo can't be beat, we always have good cheer, When toasting, tanning - anytime! drink 4X (XXXX), it's ...

Answer: beer

This iconic beer is produced in Queensland, and was first made in 1924. The company that produces it named the company after the goldfields town of Castlemaine, Victoria, where they owned another small concern.
6. People The bloke who got the bright idea was Professor Graeme Clarke But what was his invention, now? You'll hear me remark:

Answer: Cochlear implant

Australian Graeme Clark AC is a professor of otolaryngology at the University of Melbourne and he and his team at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital are responsible for the development of the cochlear implant. This device has given hearing to many children and adults who were either born deaf or suffered work-related (or other) hearing loss.
7. Religion They say we worship sport you know, but there was this one day Our biggest ground, the MCG, was filled with folk, who prayed The preacher from the US came, in 1959 Who led this work, what Reverend came, salvation to proclaim?

Answer: Billy Graham

The stands of the Melbourne Cricket Ground, which at the time had capacity to seat around 110,000, were packed. People was also seated on the ground itself and the crowd attracted by the event, over 130,000 is still the largest ever at the ground. The largest sporting event there was recorded at a tick over 120,000 for a Victorian Football league grand final.
8. Sport We love our sport, from AFL to cricket in the dark, Now I need to name the man who's called the Great White Shark.

Answer: Greg Norman

Greg Norman is a professional golfer who reached Number One in the world in the 1980s and 90s. He was born in the Queensland mining town of Mount Isa. He played in numerous PGA tours and championships and had 14 European tour wins.
9. Animals We've animals of which you've heard, dingoes and kangaroos; But what 'ships' roam the Centre, wild, those the Afghans used?

Answer: Camels

Around one million feral camels roam across approximately 37% of mainland Australia, but in regions so remote they are rarely seen. Introduced to support construction in the fledgling colony in around 1840, they were managed by Muslim cameleers and were used by explorers Burke and Wills in their expeditions. Once automobiles were introduced, the camels were released into the wild, where they quickly adapted.

They cause immense destruction to the flora where they roam and to date, the programs introduced by successive governments to control them have produced little effect.
10. Hobbies My favourite food is Vegemite, I tell you, that it's true When eating it your body gets 'what' that's good for you?

Answer: Vitamin B

Made from brewer's yeast, Vegemite is high in vitamin B. It was developed in 1922 by Cyril Callister in Melbourne. It has practically no fat and no sugar and is great on toast if you're unwell or dieting. They suggest to spread it lightly on buttered bread or crackers, but, for the real aficionados (like moi), it has to be slathered on generously.

It's great under eggs or avocado. It had to be rationed during WWII so the Armed Forces could have a taste of home.
