Answer: The Persistence of Memory

"The Persistence of Memory" is one of Salvador Dali's best known works. It depicts several clocks melting in a desert landscape. A number of art critics and experts believe the painting is somehow based on Einstein's theory of relativity but Dali rejected that idea. "The Persistence of Memory" is displayed in New York's Museum of Modern Art or MOMA for short.

A statue similar to the painting can be found in Shanghai, China.

Answer: A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte

"A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte" is a famous painting by Georges Seurat. It depicts a bunch of people relaxing along the River Seine on a sunny afternoon. There are people lying on the grass and women standing and holding parasols to block out the sun. Seurat painted this work in the technique known as pointillism, which means that many small dots of color come together to form the larger picture.

The painting is housed in the Art Institute of Chicago.
3. Dan Brown knows the painting well. This woman does not smile nor does she have any eyebrows. What is this painting?

Answer: Mona Lisa

Leonardo da Vinci's "Mona Lisa" is one of the most famous and expensive paintings of all time. It has been subject of many documentaries, books and films including Dan Brown's "The Da Vinci Code" where the painting played an important role. The "Mona Lisa" hangs in the Louvre Museum in Paris.

It is called "La Giocanda" in Italian and "La Joconde" in French. The model for the painting is believed to be Lisa del Giocondo (or Lisa Gherandini) whose husband commissioned the painting from da Vinci.

The painting is infamous for its smile or lack thereof (art experts disagree as to whether or not Mona Lisa is actually smiling) and for its missing eyebrows.

Answer: The Birth of Venus

"The Birth of Venus" is a famous Renaissance painting by Sandro Botticelli depicting the birth of the Roman goddess Venus. According to the popular myth, Venus born as an adult woman from the sea, which explains why she is standing on a large seashell. Like many of Botticelli's other works, "The Birth of Venus" can be found in Florence's Uffizi Gallery.

"Liberty Leading the People" is a famous 1830 painting by Eugene Delacroix depicting the defeat of King Charles X of France. The painting prominently features La Marianne, a woman heroically personifying France, carrying the French flag and a bayonet and leading French soldiers of the fallen bodies of their enemies. This painting is located in the Louvre.

The Floies-Bergere had a reputation for being scandalous and full of nude women but the woman in the painting is fully clothed and serving customers at the bar.

It is housed in the Courtauld Gallery in London.

"American Gothic" is a famous painting by American artist Grant Wood. The models for the painting were Wood's sister and his dentist. The painting is housed in the Art Institute of Chicago.

Hokusai was a famous Japanese artist best known for creating the "Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji" landscape prints series of which "The Great Wave off Kanagawa" is the first. Hokusai created many versions of these prints and they are spread all over the world.

In addition to being the first, "The Great Wave off Kanagawa" is the most famous and most popular. In the print, it appears that a giant wave is about to wash over Mount Fuji, the highest peak in Japan.

Answer: Washington Crossing the Delaware

"Washington Crossing the Delaware" is a famous painting by Emanuel Leutze. It depicts Washington's surprise crossing of the Delaware River on Christmas night to ambush the British-aligned Hessian troops stationed in Trenton, New Jersey. Leutze painted many scenes in American history especially from the Revolutionary War period. "Washington Crossing the Delaware" is located in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
