Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Hobbies: The US dollar coins minted between 1878 and 1921 are what type of silver dollar?

Answer: Morgan

These dollar coins were minted regularly from 1878-1904, but in 1904 the government suspended their production until 1921, when they were produced for one more year. After their short-lived comeback, the Morgan dollars were replaced by the Peace dollars, which were minted from 1921 to 1935. Over the course of their production years, Morgan dollars were produced at a total of five different mints (Philadelphia, Denver, San Francisco, Carson City, and New Orleans), more than any other coin to date.
2. Sci/Tech: If your job description contains the acronyms AFIS and CODIS, you most likely have which of the following professions?

Answer: Forensic scientist

AFIS stands for Automated Fingerprint Identification System and CODIS stands for Combined DNA Index System. Both of these would be used regularly in a forensics lab to help identify fingerprints and human trace evidence. The Common Bond is not any of the 'CSI' shows, though.
3. Sports: If you wanted to experience the Heat, catch the Marlins, or see the Dolphins, which city would you visit?

Answer: Miami

Miami's baseball team is the Marlins, their basketball team is the Heat, and their football team is the Dolphins.

The Marlins beat the Cleveland Indians in 1997 to win the World Series, only to end up the worst team in baseball in 1998. However, they beat the Yankees in 2003 to win their second World Series title.

The Heat won the basketball championship in the 2005-2006 season. They beat the Mavericks with the help of Shaq and Dwyane Wade.

The Dolphins have won two Super Bowls in 1972 and 1973. The 1972 season was special, though, because as of 2009, it is the only perfect season in NFL history, though the Patriots came close in the 2008 season, winning every game except the Super Bowl.
4. Movies: What do the films 'Taxi Driver', 'V for Vendetta', 'Death Sentence', and 'The Dark Knight' have in common?

Answer: They all feature a vigilante as the protagonist.

In 'Taxi Driver', Travis Bickle (Robert De Niro) takes it upon himself to "clean the scum off the streets of New York".

In 'V for Vendetta', V (Hugo Weaving) eliminates government officials who torture prisoners at Larkhill Detention Facility.

In 'Death Sentence', Nick Hume (Kevin Bacon) systematically tracks down and kills members of a gang who had a hand in murdering his son.

In 'The Dark Knight', Batman (Christian Bale) goes outside the law to catch criminals wanted for all sorts of ghastly crimes.
5. People: What is the first name of the woman who danced with Fred Astaire in 'You'll Never Get Rich', married Orson Welles in 1943, and pushed the boundaries of censorship in 'Gilda'?

Answer: Rita

Rita Hayworth is one of the most famous actresses in cinema history. One of her famous roles was when she played 'Gilda'. During the movie, she performs a striptease that was just barely allowed onto the screen because of the Hays Codes that prevented the production of movies that "lower the moral standards" of the viewer.

Rita had one daughter, Rebecca, with Orson Welles, but they divorced in 1948.
6. Religion: Which of the following words is the concept in Hinduism that means the playful activity of a God?

Answer: Lila

Depending on the branch of Hinduism, lila can be either a way of describing how everything is an outcome of the Gods or just a simple word describing the activities of Gods. Lila is analogous to the idea of Pan-deism, the idea that God is the universe.
7. Brain Teasers: Fractured Words: Heist Ruckus

Answer: ice trucks

Heist Ruckus = Ice Trucks

Say it a few times and you'll hear it.

I also allowed Ice Truckers as an acceptable answer, because it sounds so similar.
8. Humanities: A carnophobe would be LEAST likely to have which of these professions?

Answer: Butcher

A carnophobe is someone who is afraid of meat and therefore not very likely to work as a butcher.

Fear of clowns is coulrophobia.

Fear of flowers is anthophobia.

Fear of cars is motorphobia.
9. Television: Bart Simpson's principal is one of his main nemeses. What is his surname?

Answer: Skinner

Principal Skinner often tries and fails to undermine Bart's numerous pranks played at the school. He is a very boring person (not a boring character though!) and known for saying such humorous things as:

"I'm going to enjoy devouring you, Bart Simpson. Yes ... I believe I'll start, as you've so often suggested, by eating your shorts!"

"I have caught word that a child is using his imagination and I've come to put a stop to it."

"That's two independent thought alarms in one day. Willie, the children are over-stimulated. Remove all the colored chalk from the classrooms."
10. What is the Common Bond?

Answer: Dexter

1. MORGAN is Dexter's last name.
2. He works as a FORENSIC SCIENTIST.
3. He lives and works in MIAMI.
4. He moonlights as a VIGILANTE serial killer.
5. His girlfriend's name is RITA.
6. He had an affair with a woman named LILA.
7. In Season 1, the Miami PD track down a murderer known as the ICE TRUCK killer.
8. In Season 2, they hunt for the Bay Harbor BUTCHER.
9. In Season 3, the PD attempts to catch the SKINNER.

'Dexter' is one of my favorite shows and airs on Showtime network. It is based on the novel 'Darkly Dreaming Dexter' by Jeff Lindsay.
