Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Any of these answers would probably be correct in the modern world, but according to the old superstitious rhyme "What will keep the doctor away"?

Answer: An apple a day

Update: Experts now say that you should eat five pieces of fruit a day replacing the recommended eight glasses of water, for it supplies your body with the same amount of water plus it helps with digestion. They also favor kiwi fruit over apples because of the lower fat content and they also give you more energy.
2. According to an old wives' tale, what should you do while passing by a cemetery?

Answer: Hold your breath

Update: Churches are now advised to recommend simple and affordable funerals to families because of the high increase of deaths due to the ever-growing AIDS epidemic. Well, this certainly wouldn't be good news for Joe Joachim. He is the inventor of the new 'videostone', a high-tech tombstone with an embedded flat screen monitor...and quite pricey.
3. It is unlucky to wear opals, unless you were born in this month.

Answer: October

Update: The most valuable opals show their colors immediately and are usually worth 5,000 to 20,000 dollars per carat.(That's more than some diamonds!) The rarest opal is the Black Opal, in which colors are hard to see at first glance. Taking a picture of ANY opal is extremely difficult and is the main reason they are unique.
4. According to an old wives' tale, what will happen if you step on a crack on a sidewalk or walkway?

Answer: You'll break your mother's back.

Update: One of the longest continuous sidewalks in the world is The Bayshore Greenway, located in Tampa Bay, Florida, USA. It stretches 4.5 miles along the coastline with a reputation for a spectacular view of the bay. Another comes to life in the village of Placencia, during one of the world's largest arts festivals.

It's located in Belize, on the southeastern border of Mexico in the Isthmus of Panama.
5. Which one of these (according to superstition) will NOT make your wish come true?

Answer: Wish while knocking on wood

Update: There are several types of wood that claim to be the strongest in the world. Balsa wood lays claim to being the strongest for its weight. Briar wood lays claim to be the strongest with the softest feel; drinking cups and water pipes are often made of briar. Mesquite claims to be the hardest wood, with Brazilian cherry in at a close second, then the hickory and pecan tie for third.
6. According to other old wives' tales, which of these animals is NOT considered to be good luck if it enters your home?

Answer: a crow

Update: Crows are considered to be extremely intelligent birds, with the ability to invent tools and solve problems. Crows made Animal Planet's top ten 'Most Extreme Thinkers'. Here's an old saying about crows just for fun: To see one crow is bad luck! Two means good luck! Three means health, four means wealth; five is sickness and six mean death!
7. It is considered unlucky for this animal to cross your path if you are in the United States, but lucky if it crosses your path in Britain. What is it?

Answer: Black cat

Update: Felis Negripes is the scientific name, and they (black cats) have come a long way since the days they were considered bad luck, full of demons, and even killed along with their caretakers by the ignorant because of superstitions brought by religious influences.
8. If you ever want to see a friend again, never say goodbye to them how?

Answer: while on a bridge

Update: One of the highest suspension bridges in the world is The Royal Gorge Bridge over the Arkansas River, in Colorado, USA. It stands 1053 feet above the earth. However, it does not connect two roads or highways, it is part of a theme park. It's definitely not for people who have acrophobia!
9. You better throw it over your shoulder if you happen to spill any!

Answer: Salt

Update: 2007-It's hard to believe that the farmers of the largest salt mine in the world make only about 148 pesos a year, which is $.04 (U.S. four cents) a day! The mine is located in Mexico's Baja California Peninsula and is owned by the Mexican Government (51 percent) and Mitsubishi (49 percent).
10. Three of these are actual superstitions about brooms, but one isn't. Which one is NOT a superstition about brooms.

Answer: If you drop a broom, hold your nose and jump over it three times or you'll be poor.

Update: A high priest of the British White Witches said broomsticks should be ridden with the brush in front. Recently he threatened Warner Brothers studio for the Harry Potter film showing Harry riding it 'backwards'. He said he would curse the film to crash at the box office until the studio admitted they got it wrong. The movie broke box office records anyway with a one day total of 33.3 million dollars. (Maybe he said the curse backwards!)
