Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Before musicians, TV shows, movies, organizations, and authors seized hold of the word "twilight," it actually referred (and still does) to two particular times of the day. Is the sun visible during the twilight periods of the day?

Answer: No

'Twilight' (cough, cough) in its most original form ACTUALLY refers to the time of day firstly, between dawn and sunrise; and secondly, between sunset and dusk. The earth is neither lit nor dark, as the sun has dropped below the horizon, but light from the sun's rays is still diffused and refracted by the earth's atmosphere, creating a soft, romantic glow.

Twilight is a favourite amongst painters and photographers due to the haunting and husky quality of light. It is sometimes referred to as "l'heure bleue" ("the blue hour" in French) due to its beauty.
2. Known for its railroads and steel industry, there is a US state that is home to a little place of only 4.2 square kilometres named - you guessed it - Twilight. Which state in the USA contains this little vampire haven... erm, borough?

Answer: Pennsylvania

The 2000 census puts the population of Twilight at 241 people. It is located in Washington County in Pennsylvania, and has an area of approximately 4.2 square kilometres. Unfortunately, there is not much information available about Twilight, Pennsylvania. Perhaps it really IS a vampire haven, what with all this secrecy...
3. 'The Twilight Zone' was a successful US television anthology series, created by Rod Serling, containing elements of science fiction, horror, the paranormal, and the macabre (Twi-hards, some episodes even contained vampires - get excited!). It has spawned an attraction/ride in several Disney theme parks - namely Florida, California, Tokyo, and Paris. What is the name of this theme park attraction? (i.e. "The Twilight Zone ___")

Answer: Tower of Terror

'The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror' (sometimes known just as 'Tower of Terror') is a drop tower thrill ride created for Disney theme parks. The first 'Tower of Terror' was built for Disney's Hollywood Studios in the Walt Disney World Resort, Florida, in 1994; the second for Disney California Adventure Park in the Disneyland Resort, California, in 2004; the third for Tokyo DisneySea at the Tokyo Disney Resort, Japan, in 2006 (although this is simply called 'Tower of Terror' due to copyright reasons); and the fourth for Walt Disney Studios Park in Disneyland, Paris, in 2008.

During the pre-show, riders are led into the lobby of the fictional Hollywood Tower Hotel. A story is adapted from the hit television series, telling a spooky tale of how several guests entered the Hollywood Tower Hotel elevator on the 31st of October 1939. The elevator was struck by lightning, and was thus transported to the mysterious Twilight Zone - never to be heard from again...

Riders are led into an elevator, strapped in, and guided through a place known only as the Fifth Dimension - a creepy collection of images that keep in line with original scenes from 'The Twilight Zone'. Creator Rod Serling's voice is heard, saying, "You are about to discover what lies beyond the fifth dimension, beyond the deepest, darkest corner of the imagination, in the Tower of Terror." The drop sequence is then initiated, and a wonderful and exhilarating ride, where the elevator shoots up and down randomly, begins.

For the adrenaline junkies out there (much like myself), this is an awesomely cool ride - I highly recommend it to anyone planning on visiting one of the Disney theme parks!
4. Alexander Twilight - an educator, preacher, and politician - lived in the USA during the 19th century. Which of the following is one of Twilight's most notable achievements?

Answer: He was the first African-American to graduate (i.e. earn a bachelor's degree) from a college in the USA

Although some contest that the first African-American to receive a bachelor's degree was Edward Jones of Amherst College in 1826, Alexander Twilight actually received his bachelor's degree three years earlier from Middlebury College in 1823, thus making him the first.

Twilight was born in 1795 on a farm in Bradford, Vermont, to a white mother, Mary, and a father of mixed race, Ichabod Twilight. During his childhood and early adult years, Twilight worked as an indentured labourer on a neighbouring farm. During this time, he learned literacy and mathematics. At the age of 20, he enrolled at Randolph's Orange County Grammar School, where he completed several secondary school courses. He later enrolled at Middlebury College in 1821 at the age of 26, where he completed a three year bachelor degree.

Elected as the principal of Orleans County Grammar School in 1829, Twilight recognised the need for more funds, as well as a place for out-of-town students to stay while at the school. He thus initiated the building of Athenian Hall, the first granite building in Vermont, which served as a dormitory. The building is part of a recognised National Historic District, and is known as the Old Stone House Museum.

Twilight worked as a teacher and preacher (hey, that rhymes!) in both the USA and Peru, and was eventually elected to the Vermont General Assembly in 1836 - making him the first African-American to be elected to a position of state legislature. He died in June 1857.
Take THAT, Edward Cullen!
5. 'Twilight Princess' is an exciting fantasy action-adventure installment that forms part of a well-known Nintendo video game series. Which video game series contains an installment with this title?

Answer: The Legend of Zelda

'The Legend of Zelda' is a fantasy action-adventure video game series developed for Nintendo. The games revolve around Link, the male protagonist, who goes on a number of adventures, and almost always ends up saving Princess Zelda and her Kingdom of Hyrule. 'Twilight Princess' was the thirteenth installment of this series, and was released for GameCube and Wii consoles in 2006.

It was hugely successful, and has won many 'Game of the Year' awards, and received the highest score for of all the games in 'The Legend of Zelda' franchise on TopTenReviews.
6. Following the smash hit 'Fireflies', one-man band Owl City released a single containing the word 'twilight' in the title in 2010. What is the name of this song?

Answer: Vanilla Twilight

Owl City is a musical project created by Adam Young in 2007. It first rose to prominence in 2009 with the release of the hit single 'Fireflies' from the album 'Ocean Eyes'. 'Fireflies' was followed by 'Vanilla Twilight', a song that has been speculated to be a bittersweet love song about his dead wife or girlfriend.

This has not, however, been confirmed. Although Young initially recorded 'Vanilla Twilight' some time in 2007 or 2008, it was only released in 2010.
7. 'Twilight' has even worked its way into medicine! Twilight anesthesia is an anesthetic technique applied during certain surgical procedures, affecting both the body and mind. When under twilight anesthesia, is the patient awake/conscious?

Answer: Yes

Twilight anesthesia refers to a form of anesthesia where the patient is "put under" with a vampire bite... Erm, actually no (I just KNOW some of you were totally getting yourselves worked up there).

The patient is indeed conscious when under twilight anesthesia, although they are heavily sedated, and may not be able to remember the procedure later on - this is known as the "twilight state". A patient is given only a mild dose of general anesthetic. They are thus responsive, and able to follow simple instructions given to them by their doctor, while still being comfortable during the procedure, and feeling very little pain.

Twilight anesthesia is generally thought to be less risky than general anesthesia. Blood pressure, breathing, and heart rate can be better monitored using this technique. A common procedure that uses twilight anesthesia is the removal of wisdom teeth.
8. The "twilight years" refer to a certain phase of life - 104 year-old vampire Edward Cullen should know all about it! If someone is said to be in their "twilight years", what phase of life are they going through?

Answer: The elderly phase and last few years of someone's life

Someone who is in their "twilight years" is basically someone who is getting on a bit, and is generally recognised as the last few years before death. It can be seen as the fading of the light into night, much like life eventually fades into death. A cute poem (with musical accompaniment!) regarding the "twilight years" and aging can be found at the following link: http://www.angel9oh7.com/gmmytwilightyears.html. Enjoy it!
9. With first operations beginning in 1989, the Twilight Express is the longest operating overnight train service in a certain Asian country. Which one?

Answer: Japan

The Twilight Express is an overnight train service in Japan that began running in 1989. It is operated by the West Japan Railway Company, and runs between Osaka and Sapporo (two Japanese cities), a journey that takes about 23 hours. It is a popular tourist attraction for visitors to Japan due to its fairly luxurious compartments (as far as trains go, that is).
10. Oh, alright, ALRIGHT! I concede! 'The Twilight Saga' - a series of fantasy novels - brings you the story of pale, clumsy, needy, and downright annoying Bella Swan; her undead, controlling, 104 year-old, vampire lover, Edward Cullen; and her furry werewolf of a best friend, Jacob Black. Which female author brought this cult phenomenon to life?

Answer: Stephenie Meyer

The idea for the 'Twilight' series first came to Stephenie Meyer in 2003, when she had a dream about a boy and a girl sitting in a meadow, talking about their love for one another. The boy was unnaturally beautiful, and sparkled in the sunlight; the girl was a normal human being. From this dream, she wrote Chapter 13 of 'Twilight'.

She then went on to write the rest of the novel, which was eventually published in 2005. Since then, Meyer has completed three other installments of the novel - 'New Moon', 'Eclipse', and 'Breaking Dawn', as well as a spin-off novella, 'The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner'.

The series has since spawned films starring Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson, and all manner of 'Twilight' merchandise, including posters, dolls, and even clothing lines.
