Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these words is NOT 'night' in another language?

Answer: Niets

'Nacht' is German, 'nuit' is French, and 'notte' is Italian. 'Niets' is Dutch, but it means nothing. Literally, it means 'nothing'.
2. Which Christmas carol contains the line "round yon virgin mother and child"?

Answer: Silent Night

"Round yon virgin mother and child, holy infant so tender and mild..." is the completed line from the popular Christmas carol "Silent Night". The song was written by German priest Joseph Mohr in 1816, but it wasn't until 1818 that it was put to music by Franz Gruber, an Austrian headmaster. Today, we sing this song as a slow lullaby, but Gruber originally composed it as an upbeat, dance-like song.
3. What is a nightie?

Answer: A garment worn in bed

A nightie, short for nightdress, is a garment that women wear to bed. Nighties are usually loose and light, so as not to cause too much discomfort while sleeping.
4. What is the fear of the night known as?

Answer: Nyctophobia

Nyctophobia is the clinical term for the fear of night or darkness. There are other terms for this, like scotophobia and achluophobia, but nyctophobia is the proper term. Nyctophobia is mostly related to children, and their fear of what could be in the darkness, but it can be found in adults too.
5. Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" features the character Viola, who assumes the identity of a page called Cesario.

Answer: False

"Twelfth Night" is the play featuring Viola. When she is shipwrecked on the shores of Illyria, where the play is set, she presumes her brother Sebastian dead when she loses contact with him. She then dresses as a boy and starts to work for Duke Orsino.

The basis of the play is a case of mistaken identity, where Viola falls in love with the Duke, but Olivia, the woman that Orsino hopes to marry, falls in love with Viola (who is posing as a boy, but no one knows that).
6. The Bee Gees had a hit in 1978 with which disco song?

Answer: Night Fever

From the soundtrack to the film, "Saturday Night Fever", The Bee Gees' song "Night Fever" stayed at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 for well over two months in 1978. It hit the top spot on many other singles charts in other countries, including Canada, the UK, and Brazil.
7. Which long-running American television show is hosted by a different celebrity each week?

Answer: Saturday Night Live

Famous for having a different celebrity guest host each episode, "Saturday Night Live" is one of America's longest running television shows. Several sketches from episodes over the years have inspired feature films, such as "Wayne's World" and "The Blues Brothers". This show has also helped to launch successful careers for some of its cast members.
8. Freddy Krueger is a character from which movie?

Answer: A Nightmare on Elm Street

Freddy Krueger burst into our dreams when he first appeared in "A Nightmare on Elm Street" in 1984, written and directed by Wes Craven, known for his horror films. Krueger was burned alive by angry parents when he was released from prison for murdering children. He then exacts vengeance by harming teenagers in their dreams. The film had a significant impact on the horror genre.
9. What are animals that sleep during the day and become active at night known as?

Answer: nocturnal

As the sun sets, and most of the world slows down, the beasts of the night awaken and begin their activity. Bats and owls are commonly seen flying from their trees at dusk, and many other creatures stir for the night. The opposite of nocturnal is diurnal.
10. What was the name of the first collection of short stories by Stephen King?

Answer: Night Shift

The master of horror writing's first collection of short stories was "Night Shift" in 1978. Some of his most popular stories are part of this collection, including "Graveyard Shift", "Children of the Corn" and "Jerusalem's Lot".
