Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Sometimes called a "skunk bear" or a "devil cat", this animal is neither a bear nor a cat. With a Latin name of Gulo gulo, what carnivore and carrion-eater member of the Mustelidae family is it?

Answer: Wolverine

The Mustelids are a group of animals that all resemble weasels in some way. The wolverine is one of the largest members of the family and quite probably the most ferocious of the bunch. "Gulo" is Latin for "glutton". This name was probably given to them on observance of their eating habits. It is doubtful that they are actually gluttons, but rather that they are opportunists who eat what they can as quickly as possible (if they find it) when food is scarce - particularly in winter.

While the wolverine does have very sharp claws for digging and climbing, it is nothing like its "X-Men" persona. Wolverines do have very big feet in comparison to body-size, however, which serve as "snowshoes" for chasing things in the northern regions of the world that they live in.
2. Medal of Honor winner Captain Richard O'Kane said, "There's no margin for mistakes in submarines. You're either alive or dead". About what percentage of American submariners lost their lives in WWII?

Answer: 22%

O'Kane himself was almost one of the over 3,000 American submariners who lost their lives in WWII. On October 25, 1944 his boat, the USS Tang (SS-306), was attacking a Japanese transport near Taiwan when a torpedo it fired went haywire, circled and struck the Tang abreast of the aft torpedo room. Only nine men out of her crew of 78 survived.

After being rescued by the Japanese, O'Kane was beaten and tortured. He survived the war in a Japanese prison camp. O'Kane is the subject of a biography called "The Bravest Man," by William Tuohy.

The USS Tang sank 24 Japanese ships during her brief eight months of service.
3. In Elizabethan England, common people were forbidden to wear silk, satin, lace, velvet, and any clothing colored red or purple. What were these laws called that forbade commoners from wearing rich clothing?

Answer: Sumptuary Laws

Elizabethan society had a number of class distinctions. One way of enforcing these was by setting standards of dress for all citizens according to their rank, so that "there may be a difference of estates known by their apparel after the commendable custom in times past". Naturally, these laws proved nearly impossible to enforce.
4. Dang me, it's not just politics that makes for strange bedfellows. Sometimes it's Broadway. Which country singer born in Texas wrote both the music and the lyrics for "Big River", a production about Huckleberry Finn?

Answer: Roger Miller

Roger Miller, probably best known for "Dang Me" and "King of the Road", was more prolific than the general public might believe. Besides earning several Grammy awards, he not only wrote the music and lyrics for the original 1985 production of "Big River", but he also performed as an actor in it and received both the Tony and Drama Desk awards for his efforts.
5. There are many famous quotes from authors of literature. Which American defined a misogynist as "a man who hates women as much as women hate each other"?

Answer: H. L. Mencken

H.L. Mencken (1880-1956), known as the "Sage of Baltimore", was a critic, essayist, and linguist. His most famous work was "The American Language", a study of English as it is spoken in the United States. He had a rather low opinion of women in general, but nevertheless was almost universally hailed as a genius.
6. Which film/TV production company with a presidential name was founded by Adam Sandler and released most of his star vehicles?

Answer: Happy Madison

Happy Madison was founded by Sandler in 1999, and takes its name from "Happy Gilmore" and "Billy Madison", two early successful Adam Sandler movies. It has released Sandler's comedic movies, while its subsidiary Madison 23 has released Sandler's more dramatic fare.
7. The hobbies of knitting and crochet take quite a certain amount of skill and dexterity to produce something serviceable and beautiful. So if you're not feeling quite up to par on those things, you might want to try hooking. And if you did, what would you be doing?

Answer: making a rug

Hooking is generally applied to the art/craft of making rugs and wall hangings. It is accomplished by pulling any type of string/yarn/wool through some sort of backing material and then knotting it. Not terribly difficult skill-wise, but pattern choice/design can be the distinction for a true "artiste" of the hobby.
8. Video game writers sometimes use movies or movie characters as a theme for their software. One of them is "The Thing". Which movie director, known for sci/fi-horror movies such as "Escape From New York" and "Halloween", endorsed this game?

Answer: John Carpenter

John Carpenter makes an uncredited cameo (of his likeness) appearance in the game as Dr. Faraday, and personally provided direction for the ultimate release. He has been quoted as saying that the game is a near-perfect sequel to the 1982 movie. Apparently it was considered quite popular amongst gamers as it was released for PC, Xbox and PlayStation in 2002.
9. Ken Griffey, Jr. is a well-known American baseball player. He was pretty tough, but he proved to be allergic to what endorphin-releasing substance that he endorsed?

Answer: Chocolate bar

Griffey had many lucrative deals with several companies (Nike, Nintendo, etc.) but one of his first was in 1989, when he was only 19 years of age. The product was called the Ken Griffey Jr. Chocolate Bar and was basically a block of chocolate shaped like a baseball card with a resemblance of him stamped/embossed on it. Roughly, about a million bars were sold (mostly in the Seattle area of course, since he was playing for the Mariners). Hopefully you're not saving one in your fridge, as who knows what 1/4 century old chocolate could do to you!
10. In the movie "Jurassic Park", Jeff Goldblum plays a character who is supposed to be an expert on which theory?

Answer: Chaos

Jeff Goldblum plays Ian Malcolm, who has some delicious one-liners in the film. Despite the fact that the movie was pure fiction, Chaos Theory is a bona fide field in science which combines mathematics, biology, physics and engineering (there is a "probability" that there are others).

Some people think that the Butterfly Effect is the exact same thing as Chaos Theory, although that has been argued by theorists over time (and may actually apply to the movie "Jurassic Park" more so than general Chaos Theory does). Anyway, science or not, I just really loved the dinosaurs, didn't you?
