Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Many people all over the world associate this item with the color red. However, if I mention some names of specific varieties of this item, can you recognize the item: Bismarck, Gala, Jester, Queen Cox, Rome Beauty, and Saturn?

Answer: apple

While many apples are various shades of green and yellow, those that are red have that color because their outer layers contain a pigment called anthocyanin, which can appear as red, purple, or blue, depending on the pH of the species of apple. Red apple trees possess an evolutionary benefit because the bright colors attract pollinators. Of course, they also attract consumers.
2. Picture the head of a rooster. What is the name of this fleshy red flap of skin that dangles beneath this male chicken's chin?

Answer: wattle

The fleshier and redder the wattle, the healthier the rooster, for the red designates good cardiovascular well being. However, the wattle does not play as significant a role in a rooster's attracting a hen as does the comb, the firmer red fleshy piece that protrudes from the rooster's head.

Instead, the wattle's primary function appears to be to draw hens around the rooster when the rooster has found food. Behavioral biologists have noted that a rooster, after picking up food in its beak, will then drop the food and begin shaking its wattle to alert females to the presence of food.
3. The flag of this nation was completely red until 1915 when, during the reign of Mulay Yusuf, a black-bordered green pentagram was added to the middle of the red field. The five points of the pentagram represent the five pillars of Islam. What nation is represented by this red flag?

Answer: Morocco

Originally, the red flag of Morocco was a representation of Morocco's Alaouite royal family, which can trace its origin to the prophet Muhammad through his daughter Fâṭimah az-Zahrah. The red also signifies the strength and valour of Morocco's people. The green in the pentagram or star in the center of the red field represents the color of Islam itself.
4. During the gilled larval stage and the air-breathing adult stage this animal is a dull greenish brown. However, during its eft stage, this creature is a bright orange red. What creature, found in eastern North America, am I talking about?

Answer: the red-spotted newt

The red-spotted newt or eastern newt can live twelve to fifteen years in the wild. During its larval stage, this amphibian is restricted to the pond or shallow body of water in which it lives because it relies on gills to breathe. As an adult, the newt breathes directly from the air but is still a water-dwelling creature.

In between these two stages, this species of newt exists as a land-dwelling eft that travels from one body of water until it finds another in which to live as an adult. During this stage, the newt is not only a bright red orange but also develops as many as twenty red spots outlined in black on its skin.

As adults, they continue to have these spots, but their skin is now a greenish brown or olive color. Interestingly, when these creatures feel threatened, their skin may secrete a noxious substance.
5. Some have mistakenly assumed that Santa Claus's suit is red because Haddon Sundbloom, hired by Coca-Cola's advertising department, wanted to match Santa's clothes with Coca-Cola's traditional packaging color. However, why truly is Santa Claus's suit red?

Answer: Thomas Nast, an artist for "Harper's Weekly," colored it that way.

The modern image of Santa Claus, a chubby bearded man dressed in a red suit and nightcap with white trim, was created by Thomas Nast, a nineteenth-century American caricaturist and political cartoonist, and first appeared in an issue of "Harper's Weekly" in 1863. Nast was most likely influenced by the 1823 poem "A Visit from St. Nicholas".

While he did give Santa Claus a green suit in some of his drawings, the red one is the one that became the most popular. Nast also created the elephant as a symbol of the Republican Party.

While he did not create the donkey as a symbol for the Democratic Party, he did help popularize its use.
6. In the world of comic books, many superheroes wear capes, and many of those capes are red capes. Which of the heroes listed below does NOT wear a red cape? (Please consider only the superheroes' appearances in the comic books themselves and not in movies, TV, or other media).

Answer: Robin (DC Comics)

Robin, traditionally Batman's protégé, has generally always worn a yellow cape (sometimes the cape has had other colors but not red), no matter which individual has taken on the role of Robin throughout the history of the Batman storyline. The rest of the costume has traditionally incorporated various reds, greens, and blacks.

Originally, Dick Grayson wore Robin's costume, but over the years many others have taken on Robin's role--Jason Todd, Tim Drake, Stephanie Brown, and Damian Wayne (who is Batman's own son). Dick Grayson became the leader of the Teen Titans, and, wishing to assert his independence from Batman became the superhero Nightwing.

As of 2014, Dick Grayson has given up the role of Nightwing to go undercover as a secret agent working for Batman in a comic book entitled simply "Grayson".
7. Why was the World War I flying ace Manfred Albrecht Freiherr von Richthofen referred to as the "Red Baron", rather than, say, the orange one or blue one or some other color?

Answer: He had his airplane painted red.

Richtofen transferred from the cavalry to the Air Service in 1915 and became the top fighter pilot of World War I. He is officially credited with 80 air victories, though he may have been responsible for more. On April 21, 1918, he was finally shot down and killed near Amiens by Canadian Captain Arthur "Roy" Brown.

A bullet pierced his chest and damaged his heart and lungs; he managed to land quickly but then immediately died.
8. The "fourth rock" from the sun, named for the Roman god of war, is Mars. Why is Mars, the Red Planet, red?

Answer: rust

Mars is named for the Roman god of war, perhaps because of its bloody color. It appears red not just when viewed from the earth but when photographed and filmed by spacecraft outside of any planetary atmosphere. The red appearance of Mars is a result of a tremendous amount of iron dust found in most all of Mars' rocks and soil. Volcanic eruptions, wind, and water all contributed to the erosion of Mars' surface, and the dust arising from this erosion was carried all over the planet's surface. As this iron dust was exposed to oxygen, the chemical reaction occurred which creates iron oxide or rust. Dust storms still occur on Mars, large enough to consume the entire planet. Also of interest, the sky on Mars would appear red as well because of the dust in the atmosphere which scatters red photons of light. Curiously, the sky at sunset on Mars would be blue, again because of the dust, which at that point deflects the setting sun's red light and allows more of the blue photons of light from the sun to be visible in Mars' atmosphere.
9. In the decade before the American Revolution as well as during the conflict, one might see in some town squares throughout the colonies some very symbolic and controversial items referred to as liberty poles. What would one often see perched at the top of a liberty pole?

Answer: a red Phrygian cap

The liberty pole was long and slender, very much like a wooden flag pole, but at its top was usually a red Phyrgian cap, which is a conical hat with the peak slightly bent forward. Washington Irving in his story "Rip Van Winkle" describes it as a red nightcap.

Many American colonists erected these poles in town squares and on their private property as a statement of their desire to be free from the tyranny of British rule. In turn, British soldiers and authorities would frequently topple these poles, which only intensified the ire of colonials, who in turn would erect more poles.

The tradition of the liberty pole stems from the assassination of Julius Caesar. Following his death, his killers went before a large crowd and erected a pole with a pileus, or skull cap, atop it.

This skull cap was seen during Caesar's time as a symbol of a freed slave. Over time, the pileus was replaced with a red Phrygian cap, which also in time became a symbol of the pursuit of freedom. In fact, the Phrygian cap is often referred to as a liberty cap.
10. Mickey Mouse is one of the most iconic cartoon characters of all time. Because he is so readily recognizable, you should have little trouble with this question. Which part of Mickey Mouse's attire is red?

Answer: his shorts

Mickey Mouse was created in 1928 by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks, and he first officially appeared in the animated short "Steamboat Willie", which also premiered in 1928. Disney's inspiration for Mickey had been a pet mouse he kept on his desk at his early place of employment in Kansas City, Missouri.

Originally, Disney was going to call his cartoon rendition of a mouse Mortimer, but his wife thought Mickey was a better name and convinced him to change it. Early in Mickey's existence, his shorts were sometimes a dull green, but as color animation became more and more pervasive in American society, the shorts became permanently red.

This red for his clothing became a norm as he would wear in various short films red coats, shirts, and overalls.

However, his shoes have remained yellow, and his gloves and the two buttons on his shorts, white.
