Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The English "Wars of the Roses" pitted two families against each other, and they were famously represented by a red rose and a white rose. Which ultimately victorious family wore the red rose?

Answer: Lancaster

The Lancastrian line used the red rose, and the Yorks wore the white during the 15th-century Wars of the Roses. Both of these English royal houses derived from the earlier Plantagenet line, and when they were united after the war's conclusion, the joined white/red rose was used to symbolize the new Tudor dynasty, born of the reunion of the two lines.
2. To keep a historical theme, let's move to "Les Miserables," particularly the musical adaptation. In the musical, Enjolras and the revolutionaries sing a song called "Red and" what other color, which symbolize the present violence and the past's hopelessness, respectively?

Answer: Black

"Red and Black" is this song, that speaks of the red breaking dawn of the revolution after the black night of the unequal past. Marius also adds his own verses singing of the "red" of his new love for Cosette and the "black" that descends upon his life when she is absent.
3. Many colleges use red or shades thereof for their color, but some go even further and use the color itself as a mascot/representation overall! Harvard is one such school, but which particular shade of red is used for them?

Answer: Crimson

Harvard Crimsons it is - the school color is the name of its sports teams, newspaper, and more. Harvard Crimson teams compete in the NCAA Division I and the Ivy League. Their only "mascot" is John Harvard himself.
4. One more "red" school - the University of Chicago also uses a red shade as their team name, but which one is theirs?

Answer: Maroon

The University of Chicago is represented on the field by the Chicago Maroons, who play in NCAA Division III and the Southern Athletic Association. Their mascot is a phoenix.
5. Which car was immortalized in song as being both "little" and "red"?

Answer: Corvette

This refers to Prince's classic 1983 song "Little Red Corvette," which of course does not actually concern a car, but rather a romantic interaction. All the other cars have been sung about (as have countless others) but not particularly as "little red" versions of those brands!
6. Which of these book titles is NOT missing the word "Red" before the fragment shown?

Answer: ___ Fang (by Jack London)

Jack London wrote "White Fang," not "Red Fang," while the other items are all indeed described as "red" in these titles. "The Red Badge of Courage" is a Civil War novel, "The Red Tent" is a novel about Dinah the daughter of the biblical Jacob, and "Red Dragon" is a Hannibal Lecter novel.
7. Which group is not associated with red?

Answer: The Army Special Forces

The Army Special Forces are the Green Berets, while the American Republican Party and Communist Party are both represented by the color red. Star Trek Ops workers are often casually referred to as "red shirts" due to their uniform color, which often boded an untimely death to the unlucky character wearing it.
8. What is a "red-eye" flight?

Answer: Overnight flight

While red-eye flights may cross the dateline, be nonstop, or be international, their defining feature is that they are overnight, intending to take up your sleeping time as opposed to a day's travel. Certainly a good travel strategy if you can sleep on planes!
9. Which sports league has a RedZone show that cuts together all the highlights of the games?

Answer: NFL

The NFL has this platform for cutting together the high-energy moments of the day, so you can follow along and become knowledgeable about the water-cooler items without spending hours on every football game!
10. In "Hamlet," Shakespeare has his title prince give a monologue where he talks about the fall of Troy, and the man Pyrrhus who killed Priam in particular. Pyrrhus is smeared with blood, so Hamlet refers to the heraldic tincture for "red," but which word does he say Pyrrhus is colored as?

Answer: Gules

"Gules" is indeed the word he uses - saying that Pyrrhus is decked in "heraldry more dismal," as "head to toe" is he now "total gules" due to his blood-caked horrifying showing on the battlefield.
