Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Red card
Answer: Soccer penalty
In association football (soccer), when a referee shows a player a red card, it means the player is immediately ejected from the field and cannot return for the duration of that game; the player's position is not filled with another player, putting the team at a substantial disadvantage. An exception is if the goalkeeper receives the red card; in that case, a substitute player may replace the goalkeeper.
Red cards are also used as penalty notices in other sports, including fencing, rugby, volleyball, and water polo.
2. Red dwarf
Answer: Cooling, older star
One of the most common types of stars in the Milky Way is the red dwarf: a star that is low in pressure, mass, fusion rate, and temperature. In other words, it is dimmer than younger, more luminous stars. They are not observable by the naked eye.
"Red Dwarf" is also a science fiction comedy franchise created by Englishmen Rob Grant and Doug Naylor.
3. Redneck
Answer: Country bumpkin
The term "redneck" is generally pejorative in nature, referring to poor, rural people, most likely found in the southern region of the U.S. The term probably originated from the sun burns that farmers would get on the back of their necks while working in the fields.
Southern-born comic Jeff Foxworthy subverted the term by proclaiming himself a redneck and released a successful comedy album in 1993 called "You Might Be a Redneck If...." One example is "You might be a redneck if....you do the majority of your shopping in a convenience store."
4. Red Queen
Answer: Alice's chess opponent
In "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland," Alice met the Queen of Hearts, but in "Through the Looking-Glass," Alice met the more adversarial Red Queen. She explained to Alice how to play chess, but then sided with Alice's opponents in the game. The Red Queen is contrasted with the Queen of Hearts; while both powerful, the Queen of Hearts was ruled by passion, while the Red Queen was more calculated.
5. Red Tails
Answer: Tuskegee Airmen
The Tuskegee Airmen were the first African-American military aviators in the United States Armed Forces; they served in World War II. When many of them painted the tails of their aircraft red, they were given the nickname the Red Tails. In 2012, producer George Lucas released "Red Tails," a film about these distinguished airmen.
6. Redlands
Answer: City in San Bernardino County, CA
Redlands is a city in the greater metropolitan area of Los Angeles, California. The land was originally inhabited by native people of Cahuilla heritage, before the Spanish crown sent Catholic missionaries to the area. Redlands has a rich history involving citrus, railroads, and electrical infrastructure. It is the home of the University of Redlands and its mascot, the Bulldogs.
Singer-songwriter Joan Baez, Olympic swimmer Tyler Clary, and Mr. Green Jeans from the "Captain Kangaroo Show" (real name Hugh Brannum) are all from Redlands.
7. Red Teletubby
Answer: Po
The Teletubbies were costumed characters from a children's television show produced in Britain. The Teletubbies lived in a space-age pod placed in a grassy field and had television screens on their abdomens. The cast was comprised of Tinky Winky, who is the tallest and who is purple; Dipsy, who is green and tends to be stubborn; Laa-Laa is yellow and likes to dance; and Po, who is red, the smallest and seemingly the youngest.
8. Red eye
Answer: Overnight flight
The term red eye is commonly used in North America to refer to a flight that runs in the late night or early morning. Passengers generally don't sleep well during overnight flights, and thus wake up with red eyes the next day.
"Red Eye" is also a 2005 film directed by Wes Craven and starring Rachel McAdams as a kidnapping victim.
You can ease red eyes with a cool compress. If symptoms persist, see a medical professional.
9. Red Square
Answer: Where Mathias Rust landed
Red Square is a historical area in Moscow, Russia near the Kremlin; it was originally built as a marketplace. It's also the location of Russia's first public theater, St. Basil's Cathedral, and Lenin's mausoleum. On May 28th, 1987, eighteen-year-old German pilot Matthias Rust boldly landed a Cessna in the middle of Red Square in an attempt to bridge then-Soviet Russia with western Europe.
10. Where the Red Fern Grows
Answer: Book about dogs
"Where the Red Fern Grows" by William Rawls is a children's novel that packs an adult-size punch of an ending. The story revolves around Billy, who lives in the Ozark Mountains, and his acquisition and training of two hounds, Old Dan and Little Annie. Caution: read with Kleenex nearby.
In 2012, the School Library Journal put the book on their list of "Top 100 Children's Novels" just above "Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing" by Judy Blume and "The Witch of Blackbird Pond" by Elizabeth George Speare.
11. Red Hot Chili Peppers
Answer: American funk rock band

Its original line-up included Anthony Kiedis, Hillel Slovak, Flea, and Jack Irons, who all attended Fairfax High School located just outside Hollywood, California. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012. The band has won many awards, including a Grammy for Best Rock Song for "Californication" in 2001.
12. Reddit
Answer: Aggregate news website
In the summer of 2005, two University of Virginia graduates launched Reddit, an online news aggregator resource. Its platform is similar to online bulletin boards and facilitates discussions based on specific topics. One of its popular features is "Ask Me Anything," or AMA, in which Reddit users may ask a featured guest any question at all.
The guest may be someone famous, such as a politician or a celebrity, or someone with an interesting background, such as cult escapees or a retired cat burglar.
13. Red Scare
Answer: Fear of communism
There were two periods in the 20th century when Americans were made to feel afraid of a communist takeover of the U.S. economy. One was around World War I, when people feared a Bolshevik takeover such as what had happened in Russia. The other, more acute red scare took place after World War II when a senator from Wisconsin, Joseph McCarthy, used his influence to spread fear of a Soviet invasion of the U.S. by way of secret Russian agents living in the U.S.
This Red Scare has been referred to by historians as "McCarthyism," which is also a term for causing a scare without sufficient tangible evidence or documentation.
14. Red blood cells
Answer: Erythrocytes
Red blood cells, also called erythrocytes, deliver oxygen to body tissue through blood flow. In human anatomy, the red blood cells take oxygen garnered from the lungs and release it into the tissue while running through the body's capillaries or circulatory system. Under a microscope, many of them look like little round pillows. They were first identified by two Dutch scientists working independently in the 17th century.
Some of the oldest red blood cells on record were found in Otzi, a frozen human male who died around 3000 years BCE. His body was discovered in the hills between Italy and Austria in 1991 by hikers.
15. Red Guards
Answer: Mao's paramilitants
In 1966, Chairman of the Communist Party of China Mae Zedong launched the Cultural Revolution in an attempt to clear what he thought were counter-revolutionary elements within the party. A youth organization was created to further Mao's goals; the members called themselves the Red Guards and focused on removing what they called The Four Olds in Chinese society: old customs, old culture, old habits and old ideas. Mao approved of and validated the actions of the Red Guards through his speeches and writings.
