Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following creatures is a bear?

Answer: Panda

Pandas are native to the central western and south western regions of China. Their colouring, consisting of a series of black and white patches, makes them rather distinctive. Their diet is predominantly bamboo, and they are an endangered species.
2. Astrid Lindgren created which of the following children's story book characters?

Answer: Pippi Longstocking

The unconventional Pippi, the daughter of a buccaneer, is possessed of super human strength and has a mocking attitude towards adults. Despite her lack of education, she is very intelligent and has a strong sense of justice. Astrid's books about Pippi were first published in 1945 and have since been converted to television and movies.
3. Which of the following ancients was Greek?

Answer: Plato

Known as Plato, his real name was Aristocles but please do not confuse him with that other great Greek philosopher, Aristotle. The change in name is credited to one of Plato's teachers, though the reason behind it is not clear. Some argument exists that it related to the breadth of Plato's shoulders while others indicate that it may have related to his method of talking.

The other three above are all Romans.
4. Blinky, Pinky and Inky were constantly pursuing which of the following characters?

Answer: Pac-Man

Pac-Man races through the maze munching away on pac-dots while being chased by the four ghosts. Along with the three mentioned above, the fourth is called Clyde. Once Pac-Man eats all the dots he progresses to the next stage.
One of the most popular arcade games developed by Namco, it was first released in 1980 and went on to become an icon of the 1980's and is virtually synonymous with video gaming.
5. James Joyce was the author responsible for which of the following works?

Answer: (A) Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man

An early example of Joyce's modernist technique, the book was published in 1916 after having been serialised in "The Egotist" magazine during 1914 and 1915. The story follows Stephen Dedalus, and takes the reader on a journey through his awakening where he starts to question the Irish traditions that he was raised on and his Catholic upbringing.
6. Kevin Costner plays the reluctant hero in which 1997 movie based on a book by David Brin?

Answer: The Postman

This is a post-apocalyptic tale set in 2013 where society has collapsed under the weight of nuclear war. In this bleak setting, Costner's character assumes the identity of a deceased postman and begins to deliver his mail. In the process, he begins to raise the hopes of the communities that he visits.

The film was a commercial failure but holds minor interests for trivia buffs in that it hosts Tom Petty in the role of the Bridge City Mayor.
7. Sergey Bubka was a world champion at which sport?

Answer: Pole Vaulting

Ukrainian born Sergey was a six time IAAF World Champion and succeeded in breaking the world record on 35 separate occasions. He became the first man to clear the six metre barrier however, despite all this success, he seemed to be cursed when it came to the Olympic Games. Despite a long career he only managed to win gold at the Seoul Olympics in 1988. In 1984 his country boycotted the games, in Barcelona in 1992 he failed to clear any height with his first three attempts and in 1996 a heel injury forced him to withdraw from the event at Atlanta.
8. Port Moresby is the capital of which country?

Answer: Papua New Guinea

Situated in Oceania the country is officially known as the Independent State of Papua New Guinea. It is a culturally diverse nation boasting some 841 languages and is highly dependent upon subsistence agriculture. Papua New Guinea gained independence from Australia in 1975, however, it still sits as part of the Commonwealth realm.
9. Glen Raven Mills of North Carolina introduced which Allen Gant invention in 1959?

Answer: Pantyhose

Not to be confused with nylon or stockings, pantyhose represent underpants and stockings combined in one garment. This versatile invention took away the need for a variety of separate "foundation" garments. The mill improved on their work and perfectly timed their creation of a seamless version of pantyhose, which coincided with the launch of the miniskirt. Julie Newmar (remember "To Wong Fu, Thanks for Everything, Love Julie Newmar." (1995)) was also an inventor who would improve on Gant's work, creating an ultra sheer version of pantyhose.
10. Paul McCartney released which of the following "peace" songs?

Answer: Pipes of Peace

"Pipes of Peace" was Paul's 25th UK number one hit, but it was the first one that he achieved in his own right after leaving the Beatles. "Mull of Kintyre" was a massive hit but it is credited to Wings and his other UK number one was a duet with Stevie Wonder, "Ebony and Ivory". The song is the title track to his 1983 album, which aptly followed the success of its predecessor "Tug of War".
"Peace Frog" is a song by The Doors, "Peace Dream" by Ringo Starr and "Give Peace a Chance" was released by John Lennon's Plastic Ono Band.
