Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Before the arrival of the Spanish, which island was called "Borikén" by the Taíno people that inhabited it?

Answer: Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is a Commonwealth of the United States and is located in the Caribbean Sea. Though Columbus travelled to the New World in 1492, it wasn't until his second voyage in 1493 that the Spanish made it to what is now known as Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico is Spanish for "Rich Port", and it is also sometimes referred to as "La Isla del Encanto" or "The Island of Enchantment".

Many natives from the island refer to themselves as "boricuas" or "borincanos", which is derived from the Taíno word for the island.
2. Oklahoma, Florida and Idaho are examples of which geographic term?

Answer: panhandle

All three are panhandles. A panhandle is a term for a land mass that has an arm-like protrusion to it. The term has been taken from the handle of a cooking pan. A panhandle is similar in shape to a peninsula but it is not encompassed by water on three sides.

A panhandle typically has a piece of land that juts out from the rest of it. A parapet is a part of a castle that sticks out, but it is never used to describe geographic phenomena. A principality is a nation that is ruled by a prince. Principalities can take on any shape or form.
3. Which of the following colors is NOT a shade of purple?

Answer: persimmon

Purple is generally defined as any of the range of colors that can be derived from the combination of red and blue, both primary colors. Puce is a shade of purple that ranges from reddish brown to purplish brown. Plum gets its name from the fruit, which has skin that is a dark, rich shade of purple.

While there are two colors that bear the name palatinate (a blue and a purple), the one registered by Durham University as its sporting color is indeed purple. Persimmon, also derived from a fruit, is an orange color that contains no blue at all, one of the major requirements for being in the family of purple colors.
4. What "P" word means a loose overcoat?

Answer: paletot

A palafitte is a prehistoric lake dwelling, while a poniard is a small dagger. A pother is defined as choking smoke or dust.

Paletots were popular outerwear during the 19th century, and they were made for both men and women, though the styles were very different.
5. What is a disease beginning with "P" that primarily affects the lungs?

Answer: pneumonia

Pneumonia is a respiratory disease that affects the lungs. It can be caused by a virus, bacteria or fungi. Polio is short for poliomyelitis which affects the nerves. Pica is a disease that causes people to eat the inedible items such as coins and paper. Psoriasis is a skin disease that causes red marks and flaking.
6. Which of the following "P" words means an omen or feeling?

Answer: portent

A "portent" is a sign or warning that something important or terrible is likely to happen. The other words have different meanings, but sound like "premonition", which is a feeling that something might happen, similar to an omen, though the latter is an outward sign and the former comes from within a person. Nevertheless, the only word similar to "omen" of the choices given is "portent".

A "promontory" is a geographic term meaning a piece of land that juts out into the sea. "Promotion" means an action to promote something.

A "premise" is the assumption or theory that forms the basis for an argument or idea.
7. What color is Kirby, the marshmallow-shaped video game character?

Answer: pink

Kirby has been around since 1992, when he first appeared in Nintendo's "Kirby's Dream Land". Since then, he has appeared in many games, some of which include: "Kirby's Super Star", "Kirby's Adventure", "Kirby's Epic Yarn" and "Kirby's Return to Dream Land." One of Kirby's trademark abilities is being able to copy enemies' abilities by inhaling them.
8. Which of the following is the main grape used to make Pommard wine?

Answer: Pinot Noir

Only red wines are made in Pommard, part of France's Burgundy region. Pinot Noir is used to make many red wines, but it can be used to make some white varieties as well. Pouilly-Fume and Poully-Fuisse are both dry white French wines. The former is from the Loire region, and the latter is from the Burgundy region (which is better known for its red wine). Pinot Grigio is a dry white Italian wine (and "grigio" means "gray" in Italian).
9. The key ingredient in Tylenol is acetaminophen, but it has more than one name. What is another name for acetaminophen beginning with the letter "P"?

Answer: Paracetamol

Acetaminophen is the name used in the United States for the pain reliever and fever reducer, but the international name for the drug is paracetamol. Unlike aspirin and ibuprofen, paracetamol is not an anti-inflammatory medicine. Besides Tylenol, paracetamol is an active ingredient in many brand names. Panadol, Tempra, Panamax, and Milidon are a few of them.
10. What "P" word means the apex, the highest point, the very tip-top achievement?

Answer: pinnacle

The "pinnacle" is indeed the highest literal or figurative point, the opposite of "nadir". The word "paramount" means of prime importance, but it does not refer to height, even though the movie studio with that name uses a mountain top as its symbol. "Paramour" means lover, and "pinstripe" is a patten of thin stripes on wool or other fabrics.
