Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What California band had a 1990s hit with a song called "Come Out and Play", which is frequently referred to by its refrain "you gotta keep 'em separated"?

Answer: The Offspring

The Offspring were formed in the mid 1980s but didn't achieve success until the early 1990s. Their multi-platinum 1994 album "Smash" contained the hits "Come Out and Play", which hit number one on the US Billboard Modern Rock charts and "Self Esteem", which hit number four on the same charts.

The lyrics of "Come Out and Play" refer to gang violence: "one goes to the morgue and the other to jail" and "if you're under 18 you won't be doing any time".
2. For what purpose was "Play-Doh" originally manufactured?

Answer: Cleaning wallpaper

Play-Doh, a children's modeling clay, was originally created in the 1930s for cleaning wallpaper, but after kids got a hold of it and started playing with it, the manufacturers re-branded their product as a toy. Made of a variety of ingredients including petroleum and borax, the putty-like "dough" can be molded into pretty much anything and left to harden or can be remolded and used again.
3. In the 1942 film classic "Casablanca", which actress said the line, "Play it Sam, play 'As Time Goes By'"?

Answer: Ingrid Bergman

As is frequently noted, the phrase "Play it again, Sam" was not actually said in the film. Instead Ilsa Lund (Ingrid Bergman) asked the piano player to "Play it Sam, play 'As Time Goes By'". Later in the film, Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart) also asked Sam to play the song: "You played it for her, you can play it for me".

The song had been "their song", and after she had left him earlier, Blaine ordered Sam never to play the song again.
4. In which popular American sport might you see a double play?

Answer: Baseball

In baseball, a double play refers to a defensive play where two outs are scored on a single continuous play. Most double plays occur in the infield, where an infielder catches or scoops up the ball and is able to tag or force out the nearest runner and then throw the ball to another infielder to get another player out.

A common double play is the 6-4-3 play where the shortstop gets the ball, tosses it to the second baseman to force out the runner coming from first, and the second baseman then throws the ball to the first baseman to get the batter who is running to first out.
5. Who or what would you usually expect to find in a playpen or playard?

Answer: Children

Playpens or playards are enclosures for babies and toddlers which allows them some room to play while preventing them from escaping. The term "playpen" first came into existence in the early twentieth century although types of playpens have existed for some time. Early playpens were made of wood and were intended to be stationary; modern playpens are usually made of plastic and are portable.
6. What is another term for a play on words?

Answer: Pun

Puns are plays on words which take humorous advantage of a word or words having more than one meaning or sounding similar. They are also known by the word paronomasia, which comes from the Greek word meaning "to call by a different name". An example of a pun is "Energizer Bunny arrested: charged with battery".

This pun demonstrates two different meanings of the word "battery". Being that the word "arrest" was used, the implication was that "battery" meant a physical attack, but since the subject was the Energizer Bunny, the pun takes advantage of the fact that he is an advertising icon for batteries, and that he operates on batteries; thus he is "charged with a battery".
7. In which play will you hear the phrase, "the play's the thing wherein I'll catch the conscience of the king"?

Answer: Hamlet

Shakespeare's Hamlet wanted to know for sure that his uncle Claudius had killed his father and taken his throne, so he arranged for a group of traveling players to perform a play in which the character of the king had poison poured in his ear. This was the same method of murder that the ghost of Hamlet's father had said that Claudius had used.

The play worked; Claudius became agitated while watching the play and had to leave the room, thus convincing Hamlet of his guilt.
8. If you add a letter to the word "play", what word would you create that means "a flat, dried up area" or "a desert basin"?

Answer: Playa

The word comes from the Latin term plagia, meaning "hillside" or "shoreline", which in turn came from the Greek word plagios, which means "slanting". Interestingly, in Spanish, "playa" means "beach", which is more in keeping with the Latin meaning. The English usage refers to the absence of water such as a lake that has dried up.
9. What event is held every ten years at Oberammergau, Germany?

Answer: Passion Play

A Passion Play shows the events leading up to the death of Jesus. The plays have been performed for centuries, and there are numerous versions performed around the world. The performance of the Oberammergau Passion Play first took place in 1634, making it one of the oldest continuously performed passion plays(with the exception of a few interruptions, such as World War II).

It is performed every ten years, and much of the Bavarian village takes part in the play (over 2,000 people).
10. What animal name was associated with the women who worked at Hugh Hefner's Playboy Clubs?

Answer: Bunnies

The Playboy Clubs were a chain of nightclubs around the world which featured women servers dressed in corset-like costumes with cottontails and bunny ears. Despite their link to "Playboy" magazine, the clubs were actually respectable nightclubs featuring famous entertainers.

The first club opened in Chicago in 1960 and the franchise operated until the early 1990s. In 2006, a Playboy Club opened in Las Vegas, leading to other clubs opening in places like London and Macao.
