Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What do wrestlers, guns and sewing have in common?

Answer: Pins

Firing pins are in a gun. Wrestlers often 'pin' their opponents down in matches. Lastly, pins are used to sew material.
2. Who was the only man to be governor of two US states and an independent republic?

Answer: Sam Houston

Sam Houston was governor of Tennessee and Texas, and president of Texas before its statehood. He was also one of its first two senators when Texas joined the union.
3. Monarch butterfly caterpillars feed on what plants to make themselves unattractive food to birds?

Answer: Milkweed

The sap of certain milkweed species contains poisonous alkaloids. Caterpillars feed on the plants and then pass on the alkaloids to adult butterflies. This makes the butterflies unpalatable for most of their predators.
4. Which three teams in Major League Baseball have called three different cities home?

Answer: Braves & Orioles & Athletics

They are the Boston, Milwaukee and Atlanta Braves; the Philadelphia, Kansas City and Oakland Athletics; and the Milwaukee Brewers, St. Louis Browns and Baltimore Orioles. The original Baltimore Orioles became the New York Highlanders before becoming the Yankees without moving.
5. Henry Ford had a son whose name is best remembered for an association with what short-lived car model?

Answer: Edsel

Called the Ecar during its inception (short for experimental car), the natural progression was to Edsel to "honor" Henry's son. Edsel Ford died on May 26, 1943.
6. Clive Cussler was responsible for locating many lost shipwrecks including the Hunley, which was the world's first _______ to sink a ship.

Answer: Submarine

The National Underwater and Marine Agency (NUMA) in Dirk Pitt books has a real life counterpart that has been instrumental for many underwater finds--enough to populate two novels about these searches. NUMA is responsible for locating over 75 ships and an underwater locomotive.
7. The armadillo has been used to help in the study and treatment of which dread disease?

Answer: Leprosy

The low core body temperature of armadillos makes them the ideal study subject. The vaccine for Hansen's disease was discovered in part by research conducted on armadillos.
8. According to the song lyrics, 'It was a one-eyed, one-horned flying purple people eater'. But what did it really want to be?

Answer: Rock star

The song 'Purple People Eater' topped the US Billboard charts in 1958. It was written and performed by Sheb Wooley. You might remember Sheb as Frank Miller in 'High Noon' or the Hickory High principal in 'Hoosiers'.
9. Commercial sassafras oil is needed to clandestinely produce MDMA, which is what street drug?

Answer: Ecstasy

Safrole is the name for that oil. Distillation from sassafras trees yields low quantities, but larger amounts occur in camphor production. Its production and shipment is closely monitored by the US Drug Enforcement Administration.
10. Which Minnie was famous for leaving the price tag on her hats?

Answer: Pearl

Born Sarah Colley, Minnie Pearl's hats were all $1.98. She was a theater and dance major when she graduated college and began this character as part of a promotion for her touring company's shows.
