Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. MUSIC: which founding member of Deep Purple was also a member of Rainbow?

Answer: Ritchie Blackmore

Ritchie Blackmore was one of the original members of Deep Purple, joining the band when they were originally known as Roundabout (founder Chris Curtis got the idea of a supergroup with a revolving door member policy, hence the name). He played guitar and was recommended by bassist Nick Simper, who played in the Flower Pot Men's backing band with keyboard player Jon Lord. Blackmore came up with 'Deep Purple' as a band name, after a song by jazz pianist Peter de Rose. He left them in 1975 and formed Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow, or Rainbow for short. The late Ronnie James Dio was originally a member, though he later left due to creative differences.

Rainbow's signature hit was a cover of Russ Ballard's 'Since You Been Gone', released in 1979.
2. MOVIES: Judy Garland sang 'Over the Rainbow', but in which movie did it appear? (Follow the Yellow Brick Road and you'll find your answer.)

Answer: The Wizard of Oz

'Over the Rainbow' is one of Judy Garland's most famous songs, covered by musicians from Israel Kamakawiwo'ole to Ariana Grande. The music was composed by Harold Arlen while driving past a drugstore on Sunset Boulevard, and the lyrics were written by EY Harburg. Dorothy sings it in 'The Wizard of Oz' after Auntie Em tells her to go somewhere where she won't get into trouble.

It won the 1939 Academy Award for Best Original Song, and Garland continued to sing it for many years afterwards, as she loved the song's hopeful message.
3. WORLD: with which group of people is the rainbow flag associated with?

Answer: LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) people

The rainbow flag originated as a Gay Pride flag in San Francisco and was conceived by the gay artist Gilbert Baker. It originally had eight colours, each representing a different element: hot pink for sex, red for life, orange for healing, yellow for sunlight, green for nature, turquoise for magic and art, indigo for serenity and violet for spirit. Baker later dropped the hot pink stripe, due to fabric in that colour being scarce, and then the turquoise stripe in order to give the flag an even number of colours.

Some versions also have brown and black stripes to represent LGBT communities of colour. In the UK, it is commonly seen in LGBT-friendly areas, such as Manchester's Gay Village centred around Canal Street.
4. LITERATURE: which African-American writer, whose other works include 'Liliane' and 'Sassafrass, Cypress & Indigo', wrote the play 'For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide/When the Rainbow Is Enuf'?

Answer: Ntozake Shange

Ntozake Shange, born Paulette Williams, came from an artistic black family, whose friends included Miles Davis and Chuck Berry. 'For Colored Girls...' mixes poetry, dance, music and song, and Shange described it as a 'choreopoem'; it consists of a series of poems performed with music in the background. It features seven nameless women, merely known by the colours they wear: Lady in Red, Lady in Orange, Lady in Yellow, Lady in Green, Lady in Blue, Lady in Purple and Lady in Brown. Shange used the word 'coloured' in the title so that her grandmother would understand it, and was inspired to write the play after seeing a double rainbow. She updated the play in 2010, adding another poem called 'Positive'.

A film version was released in 2010, with an all-star cast including Thandiwe Newton (Tangie Adrose/Lady in Orange), Whoopi Goldberg (Alicia Adrose/Lady in White, a new character), Janet Jackson (Jo Bradmore/Lady in Red), and Kerry Washington (Kelly Watkins/Lady in Blue).
5. ANIMALS: you might have heard of the book 'The Rainbow Fish', but which of these is an actual rainbow fish?

Answer: Rainbow trout

Unlike the fish in the book, the rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) does not actually have rainbow scales, although its shiny body does have a rainbow-like appearance to it. Rainbow trout are native to cold-water tributaries of the Pacific Ocean in Asia and North America, but have been introduced to other continents to be commercially farmed for food or placed in rivers for sport, with some negative consequences for indigenous fish species there. These fish are kept in hatcheries for propagation purposes and then released into the wild. Wild trout are thought to be tastier than farmed ones.

The steelhead is a variant of rainbow trout that migrates upstream from the sea to fresh water. These fish are known as ocean trout in Australia.
6. FOR CHILDREN: Rainbow Brite was a greetings card character who later had her own cartoon series. She was often accompanied by the Colour Kids, who each represented a colour of the rainbow, but which answer is NOT a real Colour Kid?

Answer: Peppermint Patty

Rainbow Brite, like fellow retro cartoon character Strawberry Shortcake, originally appeared on greetings cards before making the leap to a cartoon series. She was accompanied by a group of Colour Kids, each representing a different rainbow colour; they all have a mascot, a fluffy creature known as a Sprite, in their signature colour and are in charge of producing various colours in the world. Lala Orange is the Orange Colour Kid and is very into fashion; her Sprite is OJ, renamed to Mango. Canary Yellow is a relentless optimist and a little gullible; her Sprite is Spark. Buddy Blue is the sporty one of the group and in charge of keeping the sky and sea blue; his Sprite is Champ. Rainbow Brite (real name Wisp) represents the rainbow itself. Twink, her Sprite, is white.

Peppermint Patty is a 'Peanuts' character who calls Charlie Brown 'Chuck', and hangs around with her bespectacled friend Marcie, who calls her 'sir'. The actual green Colour Kid is Patty O'Green, a mischievous prankster with a Sprite called Lucky who is in charge of colouring grass. The other Colour Kids are Red Butler, Indigo Doll and Shy Violet, and their respective Sprites are Romeo, Hammy and IQ.
7. RELIGION: in which book of the Old Testament does G-d make a covenant with humanity in the form of a rainbow, after a massive flood?

Answer: Genesis

The story of Noah and the Great Flood is one of the most well-known Bible stories, and appears in Genesis 6-9. In summary, G-d is angry with humanity and decides to flood the world and remake it anew. As Noah is a righteous man, G-d tells him to build an ark and take several pairs of animals, clean and unclean, on board; in Talmudic tradition, the animals also protected Noah while he was building the ark. After Noah, his family and the animals board the ark, G-d makes it rain for forty days and nights, flooding the world; after 150 days, the waters die down and the ark lands on Mount Ararat (in what is now Armenia). Noah sends a raven to look for land, but the raven comes back with a negative reply. Noah then sends out a dove, and although it also initially does not find land, when he sends it to search a week later, it returns with an olive branch in its beak as proof that it has found land.

In thanks to G-d, Noah builds an altar, and G-d makes a rainbow appear as a promise that He will never flood the planet and destroy all life on it again. In return, Noah and his descendants are not permitted to kill another human, or to consume meat with blood in it (hence why foods containing blood are off the menu for Jews).
8. HOBBIES: rainbow cookies consist of layers of chocolate, sponge cake (sometimes flavoured with almonds) and jam. They are not literally rainbow coloured, but what colours are traditional rainbow cookies? (Hint: they're popular with Italian-Americans.)

Answer: Red, white and green

The traditional rainbow cookie is coloured red, white and green, the colours of the Italian flag or tricolore, although other variants may use different colours. The name is a misnomer, as it is neither rainbow nor a cookie (if you want to get technical); it is more of a cake.

It consists of layers of sponge cake sandwiched together with jam and topped with chocolate. Originally an Italian-American treat, made in Italian-American bakeries at the turn of the 20th century, it soon spread to the Jewish community (and can be made with matzo meal or almond flour as a Passover treat, or made with margarine instead of butter to make it exempt from kosher rules).
9. HUMANITIES: in Norse mythology, what is the name of the rainbow bridge between the realm of the gods and the human world?

Answer: Bifrost

Bifröst is a burning rainbow bridge between Midgard, the Norse name for Earth, and Asgard, the home of the gods. At the Asgard end sits Himinbjörg, the castle of the god Heimdall, who guards the bridge from the jötnar (giants, elves and other humanoid beings) while keeping an eye out for Ragnarok, the end of the world. When Ragnarok comes and the sons of Muspelheim, the fire realm, ride across Bifröst, it will break.

As for the other answers, Yggdrasil is an enormous ash tree at the centre of existence, and the home of the dragon Nidhöggr, which gnaws on its roots; Fólkvangr is the meadow of the goddess Freya, where warriors go after they die; and Slidr is a river in Hel, the world of the dead, fed by glaciers.
10. TV: 'Rainbow' was a popular children's series in the UK that ran from 1972 to 1992. What were the names of the three puppets who appeared on the show?

Answer: Zippy, Bungle and George

'Up above the streets and houses, rainbow gliding high...' 'Rainbow', presented by Geoffrey Hayes for most of its lifespan, ran on ITV from September 1972 to March 1992 in its original run. The three main puppets on the show were the obnoxious Zippy, a creature with a zippable mouth; George, a camp pink hippo; and Bungle, a bear. Both George and Zippy were voiced by Roy Skelton, who 'Doctor Who' fans will recognise as the voice of the Daleks. Rod, Jane and Freddy, a group of musicians, also appeared on the show; Matthew Corbett, the man behind 'The Sooty Show', was an original member, back when they were known as Rod, Jane and Matt.

A revival ran from 1994 to 1997, with different actors playing Zippy, Bungle and George and no presenter, but it was not as popular as the original, which has become something of a cult show. An 'adult' version, which contains plenty of double-entendres and Zippy singing a rude song about bananas, was made for the Thames TV staff Christmas tape (and is no doubt doing the rounds on YouTube).
