Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What colour can be eaten (and made into marmalade)? (This should give you the idea how it works!)

Answer: orange

Orange comes from the Spanish naranja, which in turn comes from Arabic.
2. Which colour is involved in making leather?

Answer: tan

Tan is a sort of light brown, like some leather. It is also the process of preserving the skins to make the leather.
3. Which colour was a battle?

Answer: magenta

A bit harder, now. The colour magenta was discovered in 1859 - derived from coal-tar - and was named after Napoleon III's victory over the Austrians at the battle of Magenta.
4. Which colour is an electrical fitting on a ceiling?

Answer: rose

If you have a pendant light fitting, the cable to it more than likely comes from a rose. It's usually a little plastic thingy to hide the hole in the ceiling, and sometimes also to take the weight of the fitting.
5. Which colour sounds like you've finished the book?

Answer: red

Red - read: get it?
6. Which colour is a flower?

Answer: pink

The pink is a sort of carnation, and it's where the name of the colour comes from. OK, there are flowers in the other colours but they have other names.
7. Which colour is the centre of an archery target?

Answer: gold

Heraldry experts will argue that gold is a metal not a colour (and so is silver). OK. We're not talking heraldry here. What a lot of people call the 'bullseye' is the 'gold' in archery.
8. Which colour (plural) is a form of music?

Answer: blues

'When I woke up this morning, I had those low down maroons'. Doesn't really work, does it? An American form of music, but now found all over the world (except perhaps North Korea!), the blues gave birth to a lot of popular music styles.
9. Which colour has a hole with a flag in it? (On a golf course for those who haven't got it straight away!)

Answer: green

Yes. Well. No further comment.
10. Which colour is 'beyond the sea'?

Answer: ultramarine

Made from lapis lazuli, brought from 'over the sea'. From the Latin. Actually, vermilion comes from Latin as well - means something to do with little worms!
11. Which colour (in common usage) means cowardly?

Answer: yellow

Coward comes originally from cow herd. In the Language of Flowers, yellow can mean friendship, or jealousy. Confused? So am I!
12. Which colour is part of a hen's egg?

Answer: yellow

If it's a hen's egg, the inside should be the standard white and yellow when boiled or fried. (The white is clear until cooked.) If it's green - don't eat it! The yolk, although it could be an orangey shade of yellow, is called the yellow of an egg.
13. Which colour is 'Turkish'?

Answer: turquoise

From the French for 'Turkish', 'cos that's where it was imported through.
14. Which colour was one of Robin Hood's henchmen?

Answer: Scarlet

Will Scarlet, of course. By the way, the wearing of Lincoln Green had a different meaning at the time. Lincoln Green wasn't a colour as such, but a grade of cloth - not a high grade. Lincoln Scarlet was far superior stuff. Will may have had his own outfit of Lincoln Scarlet and been called after it!
15. Harder one for the last - which colour can be fired? (Usually near water. No pots involved - this remark may baffle some: if it does, ignore it, it doesn't apply to you!)

Answer: maroon

A maroon is a sort of rocket that goes bang very loudly and summons the lifeboat crew to deal with an emergency. Can occasionally be used by the military, but there's usually other things going bang there anyway.
