Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The entertainer Siegfried Fischbacher is primarily known for what?

Answer: Magic

Yep, he's the Siegfried from Siegfried and Roy, the latter being Roy Horn. He was born in Germany in 1939 and met his partner Roy on an ocean liner while performing magic under the name Delmare. They were known for using tigers in their magic acts. Even after a tiger attacked Horn in 2003, the two continued performing until 2010. Roy did not want Montecore, the tiger, put down after the attack, and Montecore lived until 2014.
2. The Austrian band Siegfried plays what kind of music? Stop banging your head and answer.

Answer: Heavy metal

Much of their music is inspired by the Nibelung myths--their third album is even called "Nibelung". Members include Bruder Cle, Sandra Schleret, Daniel Bachmaier, and Roland Wurzer. There's an entire subgenre of metal called Viking metal (or Nordic metal), which contains Viking and other Nordic themes in the lyrics and music, and often uses elements of folk metal and black metal.

Head banging is often done at metal concerts by the musicians and fans.
3. Siegfried is the male lead in which popular ballet with an avian theme?

Answer: Swan Lake

In Tchaikovsky's ballet, Odette has been enchanted by the magician von Rothbart to be a swan by day and a human by night. Prince Siegfried can turn Odette back into a human for good if he swears her eternal love and never forsakes her. However, von Rothbart seeks to trick him into falling in love with his daughter Odile, who's been bewitched to look like Odette.

The ending varies depending on the production.
4. What type of operations was Wolfpack Siegfried involved in, during WWII?

Answer: U-boat

German submarine operations in the Atlantic during WWII were called wolfpacks. Siegfried was formed in 1943 to target Allied convoys. The 18 ships were not very successful, and the wolfpack was soon disbanded.
5. Siegfried Rapp was a 20th century one-armed musician who played what hammering instrument?

Answer: Piano

Rapp lived from 1917 to 1977. He lost his right arm in WWII but continued playing piano with his left hand. His playing of Skerjanc's "Piano Concerto for the Left Hand" was recorded in 1964.
6. Siegfried Farnon is a character in what British TV show, which was adapted from a set of books?

Answer: All Creatures Great and Small

The series is based on James Herriot's books about a veterinary practice in the 1930s. Siegfried's father loved Wagner music, which explains his and his brother Tristan's names (at least they weren't called Lohengrin or Parsifal!). The vets' real names were changed for the series: in real life, Siegfried was named Donald Sinclair. In the series, he's played by Robert Hardy.
7. One of the more famous Siegfrieds is the mythological hero, who among other places is found in Wagner's opera "Siegfried". Which aptly-named opera singer has played him?

Answer: Siegfried Jerusalem

A German tenor, Jerusalem has fittingly played Siegfried in "Siegfried" and "Gotterdammerung", the third and fourth operas of the Ring Cycle. Besides Siegfried, he's played other difficult roles such as Tristan, Parsifal, Lohengrin, and Loge. He played bassoon before transitioning to opera. And yes, it's his real name, not a stage name.

Siegfried is the hero of the "Nibelungenlied", the national epic of Germany and one of the many inspirations for "Der Ring". Interestingly, the Siegfrieds of "Swan Lake" and "Gotterdammerung" are both tricked into betraying the women they love.
8. In what ballet-themed anime series does a major character find out his real name is Siegfried?

Answer: Princess Tutu

The main male character is Mytho (pronounced "MEW-toe"), who prior to the story shattered his heart in order to seal away an evil raven. In doing so, he lost his emotions and memories. When all of his emotions are finally returned to him at the end of the series, he remembers that his real name is Siegfried.

The music has been hinting at this throughout, as one of his themes is "Siegfried Idyll" by Richard Wagner. The raven's theme, which plays whenever something sinister develops, is "Siegfried's Funeral March" from "Gotterdammerung".
9. Germany had defensive positions with the name Siegfried in WWI and WWII.

Answer: True

The Germans called their 1916 defensive line Siegfriedstellung (Siegfried Position), while they called the WWII version the Westwall. The WWI version was called the Hindenburg Line by the British; the Allies named Westwall the Siegfried Line. The first line was made of tanks and forts, whereas the WWII version had tunnels and bunkers.
10. So, after an entire quiz about people and things named Siegfried, what does the name mean?

Answer: Peaceful victory

The Old German word "sigu" (which corresponds to modern German "sieg") means "victory". "Fried" comes from "frithu" or "frid", which in Old German signifies "peace". The similar-sounding Norwegian name Sigfrid can be used for either sex.
