Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Books For Kids: "The Dark Is Rising Sequence" by Susan Cooper that deals with an intersection of Arthurian legend and the contemporary world begins with "Over Sea, Under Stone." What book closes the sequence?

Answer: Silver on the Tree

"The Dark Is Rising Sequence" consists of five books: "Over Sea, Under Stone" (1965), "The Dark Is Rising" (1973), "Greenwitch" (1974), "The Grey King" (1975) and "Silver On The Tree" (1977). These Fantasy-Adventure stories, which have been compared to "The Chronicles of Narnia" by C.S. Lewis and "The Lord of the Rings" by J.R.R. Tolkien, recount how five children and one adult, who acts as their guide and protector, are drawn into the epic battle between good and evil or Light and Dark in the parlance of the series.

"The Silver Chair" (1953), published fourth and chronelogically sixth in C.S. Lewis' children's Fantesy series, "The Chronecles of Narnia," tells of the quest to rescue Rilian, the lost prince of Narnia.

"The Land of the Silver Apples," second in the "Sea of Trolls" series by Nancy Farmer, tells of bard-in-training Jack's adventures and misadventures while trying to rescue his sister Lucy. The book was published in 2007.

"The Lonely Silver Rain" is the twenty-first novel in John D. MacDonald's Travis McGee mystery series, first published in 1985. These are very definitely not children's books!
2. Idioms and Proverbs: What does it mean to be born with a silver spoon in one's mouth?

Answer: To be born to wealth and privilege

Second place in many contests and competitions earns a silver medal. Nevada is the Silver State. Eating baby food earlier than usual is a silly, made-up answer.
3. Mixed Lyrics: Which Fifth Dimension hit includes these lyrics? "We can sing a song And sail along the silver sky For we can fly"

Answer: Up, Up and Away

All these songs were Billboard top 10 hits for the Fifth Dimension: "Up, Up and Away" reached number seven in 1967, 1968's "Stone Soul Picnic" peaked at number three, "Wedding Bell Blues" topped the charts in 1969 and "One Less Bell to Answer" climbed to number two in 1970.

The quoted lyric snippet is from one of my own favorite songs, Jimmy Web's evocative "Up, Up and Away," which was also recorded by such romantic singers as Andy Williams and Engelbert Humperdinck.
4. Horse Racing: Which Irish horse was born in County Kildare in 1997, owned by Brian Walsh and trained by Gordon Elliott? Ridden by Robbie Power, he ran in the Grand National in 2006, 2007 and 2009, winning in 2007.

Answer: Silver Birch

Silver Birch won the Welsh National in 2004 and was highly favored coming into the 2005 Grand National, but was unable to run, owing to a leg injury. In the 2006 race, he fell at the Chair, the largest fence on the Aintree course. Robbie Power rode Silver Birch again in the 2009 Grand National, but he fell at Becher's Brook on the second circuit.

He competed in cross country chases for a further season before being retired.
5. Place Names: The name of which country is derived from the Latin word for silver?

Answer: Argentina

Argentina (officially known as the Argentine Republic), located in southeastern South America, is the largest Spanish-speaking country in the world by land area, the second largest country in South America and its third largest economy. The capital is Buenos Aires.

The word "Argentina" is derived from "argentum," the country being named for the Río de la Plata (Silver River) and the legend of the Sierra de la Plata (Silver Mountains). In 2013, Argentina ranked number ten on the list of the world's top silver-producing countries.
6. Military Matters: Which of the following is a medal awarded for bravery by the United States Armed Forces?

Answer: The Silver Star

The Silver Star Medal is the third highest award given by the United States military. It is given for gallantry in action against enemies of the U.S., and can be awarded to any person serving in any capacity with the U.S. Armed Forces.

In July, 1919, an act of Congress established the Silver Citation Star. Secretary of War Patrick J. Hurley approved the conversion of this award into what we know as the Silver Star in July of 1932. The medals for the Navy and the Army have different Congressional authorizations, though both were enacted into law in 1942. The Air Force version also has its own authorizing legislation.

The Silver Star is awarded for gallantry in action (military conflict) against an enemy of the United States or while assisting an ally in a conflict with one of that country's enemies, conduct that does not rise to the level of the Distinguished Service Cross or the Navy or Air Force Cross.

The medal is a five-pointed gold star, 1 1⁄2 inches in diameter, with a laurel wreath encircling rays from the center and a 3⁄16 inch diameter silver star superimposed in the center. Inscribed on the reverse is, "FOR GALLANTRY IN ACTION." The medal is suspended by a ribbon from a rectangular shaped metal loop with rounded corners. This ribbon is 1 3⁄8 inches wide and consists of the following stripes: 7⁄32 inch Old Glory red (center stripe); proceeding outward in pairs 7⁄32 inch white; 7⁄32 inch ultramarine blue; 3⁄64 inch white; and 3⁄32 inch ultramarine blue.

Distinguished recipiants of the Silver Star include Omar Bradley, James H. (Jimmy) Doolittle and Wesley Clark.
7. Old Testament: The instructions the Lord gives Moses in the Book of Exodus for constructing the Tabernacle and its fittings and furnishings involve a good deal of gold. Is there any mention of silver?

Answer: Yes

The construction of the Ark of the Covenant and the Tabernacle in which it is housed requires rather more gold than seems plausible for a nomadic people, who had spent several generations in slavery. Still, I suppose the Lord knew what resources Moses had at his disposal.

Rather less silver is called for, along with brass (copper in one modern version I have seen). As specified in Exodus Chapters 26 and 27, the silver is used for sockets or bases into which are fastened with tenons (tongues or pegs) the shittim wood (acacia-wood) boards that form the solid frame of the Tabernacle. Silver is also used in the filigree work on the pillars of the court.
8. TV Stars Mixed : Which of the following starred with Clayton Moore in the classic US television series "The Lone Ranger"?

Answer: Jay Silverheels

Jay Silverheels (born Harold Smith), May 26, 1912 to March 5, 1980, was a Canadian First Nations athlete and actor. He is best loved for his role as the Lone Ranger's companion, Tonto, in the movies and on television.
9. "Wizard of Oz": In L. Frank Baum's 1900 novel "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" the heroine, Dorothy Gale, wore silver shoes. What was the color changed to in MGM's 1939 Technicolor adaptation of the story?

Answer: red

Silver isn't a Technicolor sort of color. Ruby was much more satisfactory. As far as I have been able to find out, that's all there is to it.
10. Auto World: Which gorgeous classic car, manufactured from 1906 through 1926, led the British magazine "Autocar" to state in 1907 that Rolls Royce made the best car in the world?

Answer: Silver Ghost

This series of cars was originally called simply the 4050. One particular automobile, no. 60551, was given the name Silver Ghost while other cars were given their own names. But, the press got hold of the name and it stuck for the entire series.
