Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Peel P50 was originally made between 1962 and 1965 and is the "Guinness Book of World Records" as the smallest production car ever made. Where in UK was it made during this time?

Answer: Isle of Man

The Peel P50 was a microcar indeed, with one door, one windscreen wiper and one headlight, powered by a 49cc engine, capable of a top speed of 37mph (60km/h). Peel proudly proclaimed that it was big enough for one person and one carrier bag and went on to sell 50 cars, of which at least 27 still survive.

When new a P50 cost £199 ($260) and they are so prized by collectors now that one sold at auction in 2016 for $176,000 (£134,000). The Peel P50 was revived in 2010 and they are now built in Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire.
2. Calf Top Hill in the Yorkshire Dales was remeasured and reclassified as a mountain in 2016, making it the smallest mountain in UK. How far above the minimum height for a UK mountain is it?

Answer: Six millimetres

The minimum height for a mountain is 609.6 metres (2,000 feet) and Calf Top Hill was fractionally below this when previously measured. However when it was remeasured using new sophisticated equipment in 2016 it was recorded at 609.606 metres. After some rechecks, Ordanance Survey, the national mapping agency of UK declared, "Hello new mountain".
3. George Canning in 1827 had the shortest reign as Prime Minister, being in office for just 187 days, but which 20th century politician had an only slightly longer tenure, of 211 days?

Answer: Bonar Law

All of the answers had a short time as PM, but it was Canadian born Bonar Law who lasted 211 days between 1922 and 1923. As Conservative party leader he won an overwhelming majority in the 1922 general election and took office on 23rd October of that year. He resigned on 20th May 1923 after being diagnosed with throat cancer and died 30th October the same year.
4. Which is the smallest city in UK by physical area?

Answer: London

The City of London, in the heart of metropolitan London, is just 1.12 sq mi (716.80 acres or 2.90 km2) large, making it the smallest city by area, as well as the smallest county in UK and the smallest English city but third smallest UK city by population, as both both St. Davids and St. Asaph in Wales are smaller in population.
5. The parliamentary seat of North East Fife saw Scottish National Party candidate Stephen Gethins beat Lib Dem candidate Elizabeth Riches by the smallest margin of the 2017 general election. How many votes did Gethins win by?

Answer: 2

This tight result represented a huge swing from the 2015 election result, when Gethins won the seat by a comfortable 4,344 votes. This wasn't the only time that two votes had been the winning margin, as Mark Oaten won Winchester by the same number of votes in 1997. In 1910, incumbent Conservative candidate, Henry Duke beat Liberal Harold St. Maur by just a single vote.
6. Sue Day, at 125 cm (4 feet 10 inches) hit the headlines in 2010 as the smallest in UK, but the smallest what?

Answer: Police officer

UK police forces dropped their minimum height requirements for officers in the 1990s after they were accused of discrimination. For a short time PC Robin Port of Devon and Cornwall force was famous as the smallest officer at 152 cm (five feet), but then up stepped Day of the Wiltshire force to take the fame.

She says that her lack of height is not a disadvantage as most criminals have to stop and look twice, giving her time to make the arrest.
7. UK switched to decimal money in February 1971. What was the smallest new decimal coin by size?

Answer: Halfpenny

The halfpenny was smallest in value and size and this small size in both areas soon led to it being UK's least favourite coin, with many just tossed away and not spent. Finally in 1984, it was withdrawn from circulation. meaning that the penny became the smallest. There is no quarter in UK coinage.
8. At just 154 feet (47 metres), the Wardle in Cheshire is the shortest example of what in UK?

Answer: Canal

The Wardle provides the link between the Trent and Mersey Canal and the Middlewich Branch of the Shropshire Union Canal and is found in Middlewich, Cheshire. Although it is called the Wardle Canal, it actually comprises a 72 feet (22 metres) lock, with just a few metres of canal on either side.

The lock was required due to the 10 foot (3 metre) elevation change between the two canals. The Wardle was opened in 1829.
9. Much fought over, with Platform 3 at Claygate, The Nutshell in Bury St. Edmunds and The Little Prince in Margate all claiming to be the smallest in UK - the smallest what?

Answer: Pub

The Little Prince is actually listed in the 2016 "Guinness Book of Records" as the smallest pub at just 201 centimetres (six feet, six inches) wide and 335 centimetres (11 feet) long, but The Nutshell is only slightly larger and Platform 3 has seating for just one patron, or three if they all stand up.
10. The Small Blue is the smallest native UK butterfly. What colour is the Small Blue?

Answer: Brown

The male Small Blue does have an occasional spot of blue, but for the most part they are the same brown colour as the female. The male is normally smaller than the female and the butterfly is found across much of Europe as well as Siberia and Mongolia.
