Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This was the only occupied country in WWII that saved all its Jews by smuggling them out of the country.

Answer: Denmark

The capital is Copenhagen. Some famous Danes are Hans Christian Andersen, actor Viggo Mortensen, model Helena Christensen and musician Lars Ulrich.
2. This disease manifested itself as an epidemic in Europe in the Middle Ages. It caused a dancing mania, and was also marked by stupor and melancholy. It was thought to be caused by a tarantula bite, thus the alternative name of tarantism.

Answer: Dancing disease

Darien's disease is a rare, hereditary disease characterized by growths that coalesce into plaques of various sizes on the scalp, face, neck, trunk and underarm. Darling's disease is a fungal respiratory disease. I just made up Dahlquist's disease. I got my information from Taber's Medical Dictionary.
3. As was mentioned in my A-C quizzes, Sue Grafton's alphabetic mystery series is one of my favorites. What is her "D" installation titled?

Answer: D is for Deadbeat

Read them if you haven't. I think you may enjoy them. Her heroine is Kinsey Milhone, a private detective. She finds herself in many different situations, some humorous, some harrowing. The whole series is an interesting read, in my opinion.
4. Which word means "morbid and uncontrollable craving for alcoholic beverages"?

Answer: dipsomania

Dacromania is an irrational impulse to kill. Dacryops is a constant flow of tears, and daboia (or daboya) is an Indian name for Russell's viper, a large poisonous snake from India, Burma and Thailand.
5. Which boy's name is of Latin origin and means "lord"?

Answer: Dominic

David is a Hebrew name meaning "beloved". Dylan is a Welsh name meaning "son of the sea", and Derek is an Ancient Germanic name that means "power of the tribe".
6. This ancient breed of dog was bred to run underneath and alongside wagons. It has lots of stamina and energy, and gets depressed if it doesn't have enough human contact.

Answer: Dalmatian

Dalmatians are not the best of dogs to have around small children due to their high energy levels. Every time Disney releases "101 Dalmatians", sales of dalmatians go through the roof, and then a short time later, shelters are filled with dalmatians that weren't quite what was expected. Dobermans are very intense, energetic and highly intelligent.

They also require a lot of human contact and love to be with their family. They aren't good outside dogs because of this. Dingos are the wild dogs of Australia.

They can be domesticated, but they have to be taken out of the litter before they are 6 weeks old for this to happen. After 10 weeks, it's impossible to train them to be pets. They can climb trees and play possum when in danger. They are also thought to be the ancestor of all dog breeds. Dachshunds were bred to hunt animals that burrow into the ground.

Their short legs are perfect for digging prey out and going down into the burrows. You can get more information about this question from Dogbreedinfo.com.
7. One of the most successful electro-pop/alternative bands of the 1980s, this band had hits with "Personal Jesus" and "People are People".

Answer: Depeche Mode

Def Leppard hit it big in the US with "Photograph". Duran Duran had a bunch of great songs and videos, and Princess Diana stated they were her favorite band. Dexy's Midnight Runners are best known for "Come On, Eileen".
8. Which US university's mascot is the Blue Demons?

Answer: DePaul University

DePaul University is in Chicago, Illinois. The Duke University Blue Devils are in Durham, North Carolina. The Drake University Bulldogs are located in Des Moines, Iowa, and the Delaware State University Hornets are in Dover, Delaware. Boy, there are a bunch of "Ds" in this answer, aren't there?
9. Called a "miracle" by Winston Churchill, the rescue of 330,000 British and French troops that were stranded on this beach was considered one of Hitler's first fatal mistakes of WWII. Where was this?

Answer: Dunkirk

The troops were considered sitting ducks, and the beach was on a shallow slope to where no large ships could get in. 800 small ships, many or most of them privately owned were employed to do the task and deliver the troops to the waiting larger ships.

The smallest ship was about 18 feet in length. No one knows for sure why Hitler didn't take advantage of this situation. Field Marshal Rundstedt who was in charge of the German troops in France said in his memoirs that Hitler's failure to order a full-scale attack on the troops was a fatal mistake.

The Allied raid on Dieppe in 1942 cost many allies lives. 73% of the troops were killed, wounded or missing and all the equipment on shore was lost. However, there were many lessons learned that would prove to be helpful on D-Day. Dresden was a city in Germany that was bombed by Allied troops towards the end of the war. Danzig was a battle won by the French in the Napoleonic Wars. You can get more information for this from http://www.historylearningsite.co.uk/WW2.htm.
10. According to www.wordcount.org "do" is the most popular word in the English language that starts with a "d". What is its ranking?

Answer: 39

"He" is ranked 15th, "they" is ranked 28th, and "to" is ranked 4th. This is a really neat website I came across. It has ranked over 86000 words by their usage in the English language. The words "the", "of" and "and" are numbers 1, 2 and 3 respectively. Go on over there and give it a spin. Hope you enjoyed this quiz!
