Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Miley Cyrus was only eleven years old when she first auditioned to play what character?

Answer: Hannah Montana

Originally, Miley Cyrus (daughter of Billy Ray Cyrus) auditioned for the role of Lilly Truscott, but producers felt she was a better fit for the title role of Miley Stewart (Hannah Montana), a teenage pop star who uses an onstage disguise to keep her identity secret from all her friends. So she auditioned for Hannah Montana, and despite some people involved telling her she was too young, and would not be considered for the role, a few weeks later the call came through, and she was cast as Hannah Montana. The Disney Channel TV series became so popular, (and remains one of the most successful in its history), it led to sidebars such as live concert tours, clothing lines for little girls, and "Hannah Montana: The Movie."

Montana has many popular concert venues such as the Al Bedoo Shrine Auditorium, Alberta Bair Theatre, Cove Creek Outdoor Pavilion, and the First interstate Arena, all in Billings Montana. There is also the Adams Center, Dahlberg Arena, Dennison Theatre, and Wilma Theatre, all in Missoula, Montana. And then there's Kettlehouse Amphitheatre in Bonner, Monatana.
2. The movie "A Star is Born" has been filmed several times by Hollywood. Who played the Norman Maine part opposite Janet Gaynor in that film version?

Answer: Frederic March

There is an unfortunate coincidence regarding the iconic scene in which Norman Maine drunkenly interrupts Janet Gaynor's character's Academy award presentation. Something just like that actually did happen to Janet Gaynor nine years earlier when she won the Oscar for Best Actress at the first Academy Awards in history in 1928. She won for the film "7th Heaven" and her sister who was very drunk, embarrassed Gaynor with her uncontrolled intoxicated behavior. To further punctuate the life imitating art aspect, John Barrymore was the original choice to play Norman Maine, but due to his alcoholism, he had trouble remembering his lines. One of the film's most famous line, "Hello, everybody. This is Mrs. Norman Maine" was voted by Premiere magazine as number 52 of "The 100 Greatest Movie Lines."

Where is the best place in Maine for stargazing? Known for having some of the darkest skies on the East Coast, the state of Maine has some prime locations for viewing the night sky. There is The Emera Astronomy Center, on the University of Maine Orono's campus which is often open to the public for tours. Acadia National Park also presents an outdoor locale; by law businesses use night-sky-friendly outdoor lighting to reduce light pollution, which makes for better viewing.
3. On the 70s sitcom "Good Times" starring Jimmy J. J. Walker, who played the family matriarch Florida Evans?

Answer: Esther Rolle

Technically, "Good Times" was a spin-off of the show "Maude" starring Bea Arthur which in turn was a spin-off of "All in the Family" making "Good Times" a spin-off of a spin-off. But I said "technically" because "Good Times" never references Florida Evans' supposedly previous employment as Maude's housekeeper in suburban New York. "Good Times" has reshaped her history whereby her husband is no longer Henry a firefighter but is now James and they live in Chicago, not New York (or Florida). There is one episode of the show in which Esther Rolle's Florida does mention she was a maid, which may be either some bit of playfulness on a writer's part or some confusion in the writers' room over character backstories. Apparently, Esther Rolle had mentioned at some point during production on "Maude" that she would be interested in a doing another show, and so she was auditioned for the role of the family matriarch and she won the role. Most likely then it was some way of the networks trying to capitalize on the Florida Evans already established and proven character, and carry it over to the new show.

According to the Bureau of Labor statistics, approximately 81,500 people work as housekeepers in the state of Florida. The mean hourly wage is $10.82.
4. Duncan Idaho is a character which science fiction universe?

Answer: Dune

In 1965, Duncan Idaho became such a popular character in Frank Herbert's first novel of his Dune series, "Dune" that Herbert brought him back in his 1969 novel "Dune Messiah." Married to Alia Atreides, he was expert at swordsmanship in the service of the House Atreides. He was Duke Leto's right-hand man, and in the movie adaptation was played by actor Richard Jordan.

In Idaho, off-road vehicle sports riders enjoy the 400-foot high St. Anthony Sand Dunes blown by the wind into those hills of white quartz sand. The St. Anthony Sand Dunes are also inhabited by one of the largest herds of wintering elk in the United States, and the subject of a Wilderness Study Area.
5. Alaska Nebraska is fictional animated pop singer star on what popular animated cartoon series?

Answer: The Simpsons

Alaska Nebraska, a parody of Hannah Montana, is a 16-year-old pop singer and actress, whose biggest hits include "Touch a Star" and "Make It Yours (The Star Song)". She appeared in the episode titled "Waverly Hills 9-0-2-1-Do" from season 20 which premiered May 3, 2009. Nebraska Alaska is from a place called Waverly Hills which has a much more upscale reputation than Springfield where the Simpsons live. So Marge decides to have the family rent an apartment in Waverly Hills so that the kids will be able to attend the much better Waverly Hills Elementary School.

Sherry Simpson was a well-known writer about all things Alaskan. In addition to being the author of "Dominion of Bears: Living with Wildlife in Alaska" and "The Way Winter Comes: Alaska Stories" she taught creative writing in the Master of Fine Arts program at the University of Alaska Anchorage. Sadly, she passed away recently, October 21, 2020.
6. Keanu Reeves played FBI agent Johnny Utah in which of the following films?

Answer: Point Break

Reeve's character was an F.B.I. agent in the film "Point Break" who investigates a gang of surfers who are suspected of being bank robbers. When Reeves was cast, the producers considered titling the film "Johnny Utah", and then when they cast Patrick Swayze as Bodhi, they considered calling the film "Riders on the Storm." Midway through filming they decided on "Point Break."

We certainly don't think of the state of Utah as being a popular locale for surfing, but the world's best wake surfers show up every year for the Centurion World Wakesurfing Championship in Ogden Valley, Utah. Wakesurfing is a cross between surfing and wakeboarding. In wakeboarding, you hold onto a rope to stand up and then you are pulled by a boat, and then you surf a form of low-impact way of surfing the wake of the boat just as you would surf a wave. The advantage is that of course a wake can last a long time, as long as the boat can motor on, as opposed to ocean waves that don't last nearly that long. Some of the most recommended wakeboarding lakes near Salt Lake City, Utah include Lake Powell, Flaming Gorge, and Jordanelle.
7. Who played Nevada Smith in the 1966 western that went by the same name as that character?

Answer: Steve McQueen

He's half Native-American Indian, he's half White. He's Steve McQueen and he's on a mission to track down the men who murdered his parents when he was a teenager. McQueen at age 35 still played the 16-year-old Nevada Smith in the early scenes. The name "Nevada Smith" actually never gets mentioned until Steve McQueen says it 1 hour and 52 minutes into the film.

Nevada has been a very popular state to shoot westerns in. Some of the greatest oaters in cinema history were shot there including "The Ox-Bow-Incident," "The Big Country," and the very final films of two cinema icons: John Wayne in "The Shootist" and Clark Gable in "The Misfits."
8. Harrison Ford's character's name, Indiana Jones, was inspired by whom, according to George Lucas?

Answer: Nevada Smith

The character name, Indiana Jones, of 1981's "The Raiders of the Lost Ark" was inspired by the name "Nevada Smith" from the 1966 western in which Steve McQueen played the title role. George Lucas originally named the character "Indiana Smith" partly after his dog which was named Indiana (actually it was Marcia Lucas's dog, a Malamute), and partly after "Smith" from the McQueen movie. And then he changed it to Indiana Jones.

There is a town named Nevada in the state of Indiana. It is an unincorporated community in Tipton County there. The state of Indiana has a population approximately twice that of Nevada, but a surface area approximately a third of Nevada's.
9. On what revered American television show did actor James Spader portray Robert California?

Answer: The Office

During Season 7 of "The Office" in 2011-2012 James Spader played Robert California in 25 episodes of the show. The first episode he appeared in, called "Search Committee", focused on finding a replacement for the boss that Steve Carell had played. As Robert California, Spader says in his interview for the job, "There is only sex. Everything is sex." Spader's final episode in the role was "Free Family Portrait Studio" in 2012. His last line of the entire series was, "It's been a great year!"

The fictitious Dunder-Mifflin on "The Office" was a paper sales company; there are about 42 paper industry supply companies in the state of California. There are approximately 66 paper recycling companies in California.
10. The film "Raising Arizona" had an actual actor with a near-stately name: Randall "Tex" Cobb playing a bounty hunter on the trail of a couple that has kidnapped one of the quintuplets born to a furniture tycoon. Do you recall the name of that tycoon and his kidnapped infant?

Answer: Nathan Arizona

Nicolas Cage plays H.I. McDonnough, a recidivist convenience store robber, who while having his mug shots taken by a policewoman named Edwina (Holly Hunter), falls in love with her. They get married but discover she is infertile, so they hatch instead a scheme to kidnap one of the quintuplets of the wealthy Nathan Arizona. And so they do run off with Nathan Arizona, Jr. There were 15 infants employed to take turns playing the quintuplets; one of them had to be fired after learning how to walk.

In the state of Arizona, any form of kidnapping is charged as a felony, ranging from a Class 4 to a Class 2 felony depending on the circumstances. Class 2 felony kidnapping is the more serious charge, punishable by a minimum of 4 years in prison, to a maximum of life. In Arizona, a person has committed kidnapping when they restrain the movements of another person on purpose, and intimidate that other person into fearing they will by physically harmed, or any of the other factors listed in the law. The city of Phoenix, Arizona reported that there are roughly 370 kidnappings each year linked to criminal smuggling gangs.
