Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1999, NASA officially renamed its Lewis Research Center for which famous astronaut?

Answer: John Glenn

Adjacent to Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, the Lewis Research Center was established as the Aircraft Engine Research Laboratory for NACA (the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics) in 1941. By the time it was renamed in honor of former center director George W. Lewis, who died in 1948, the center had taken on research on other forms of aerospace and aeronautical propulsion. On March 1, 1999, the center was renamed Glenn Research Center at Lewis Field, in honor of both Lewis and Ohio native John Glenn.

The center continues its work in propulsion research and also leads the space program's research on microgravity science, aircraft instrumentation and deicing. The center also holds the distinction of being the first NASA research branch to win an Emmy Award, for its work with Ku band communications satellites. (Thanks to the Glenn Research Center at Lewis Field website for historical information on the research center.)
2. On the original pilot of the classic game show "Let's Make A Deal", Monty Hall unsuccessfully tries to give away what kind of automobile?

Answer: Pontiac Tempest

In 2003, the Game Show Network aired the original pilot of "Let's Make A Deal", which was made in 1963 for NBC but never aired as part of the original series run. The Pontiac Tempest offered on the show was a convertible and retailed for $3,127.
3. The SimCity series of games is produced by which computer gaming company?

Answer: Electronic Arts

The SimCity franchise became part of the Electronic Arts portfolio in 1997, when Electronic Arts completed its acquisition of Maxis. The Maxis brand still appears on the SimCity games and relatives like The Sims and SimGolf.
4. Raleigh, North Carolina and Columbia, South Carolina are linked by which US Highway?

Answer: US 1

As it winds its way from Maine to Florida, US 1 passes around Raleigh (as the west side of the Cliff Benson Beltline) and meanders through east-central North Carolina on its way to Columbia. The highway is known as Two Notch Road as it crosses I-77 and I-20 and goes into downtown Columbia.
5. African-American lawyer Juanita Kidd Stout holds what distinction?

Answer: First African-American woman elected to a court of record.

A native of Wewoka, Oklahoma, Juanita Kidd Stout actually got a degree in music at Iowa in 1939 and taught grade school and high school music for a few years in Seminole and Sand Springs, Oklahoma before getting into law. She passed the Pennsylvania Bar in 1954 and, after serving in private practice and the Philadelphia district attorney's office, she became head of the Appeals, Pardons and Parole Division.

In September 1959, she became the first female judge of any color in Pennsylvania, having been appointed by the governor to the Philadelphia Municipal Court. That November, she was elected by the citizens to a ten-year term on the same court.

It was the first time in US history that an African-American woman was elected to a court of record.

She would be re-elected twice, and became a champion of justice, specifically seeking to curb juvenile crimes. [Thanks to the book "Great African-American Women" by Darryl Lyman (1999, Gramercy Books) and to Oklahoma State University's website for information on Juanita Kidd Stout.]
6. Which aircraft manufacturer was the prime contractor for the XB-70 Valkyrie strategic bomber prototypes?

Answer: North American

Designed to fly at Mach 3, the huge, delta-winged Valkyrie never saw active service. Instead, the two prototypes that were built were used for extensive supersonic flight tests. One prototype was destroyed when it collided with a chase plane in June, 1966.

The other was delivered to the US Air Force Museum at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio in February, 1969, where it is now on display.
7. What device, commonly found under the kitchen and bathroom sinks, prevents sewer gases from entering the home?

Answer: J-trap

The J-trap (also known as the P-trap) does exactly as advertised. This curved piece of piping holds water, preventing sewer gases from entering the home. It also functions to prevent rings and other heavy items dropped down the drain from escaping into the waste-water supply.
8. Which country's flag features a black trident centered on a yellow band, which in turn is flanked by two equally-sized dark blue bands?

Answer: Barbados

According to "The World Encyclopedia of Flags", the blue in Barbados's flag represents the sea and sky, while the yellow represents the sandy beaches. The trident harkens to the nation's past and its place in the Caribbean.
9. Which of the following schools was NOT a charter member of the Atlantic Coast Conference?

Answer: Georgia Tech

On May 8, 1953, seven schools--Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina and Wake Forest--withdrew from the Southern Conference and set up the bylaws by which the Atlantic Coast Conference would be founded. Virginia would join the conference on December 4, 1953. South Carolina resigned the conference on June 30, 1971 and would later join the Southeastern Conference. Georgia Tech joined the ACC on April 3, 1978, fourteen years after leaving the SEC. Florida State became the ninth team in the conference on July 1, 1991. Miami and Virginia Tech will begin play in the ACC in 2004, and Boston College is slated to fully integrate into the conference in 2005. (Thanks the the ACC's website, www.theacc.com, for historical information on the conference.)
10. Which city was originally slated to host the 1940 Summer Olympics?

Answer: Tokyo

The outbreak of the Sino-Japanese War in 1937 forced Tokyo to forego its opportunity to host the 1940 Olympics. The alternate site, Helsinki, was also ruled out after Russian troops invaded in 1939. And World War II forced the cancellation of the 1944 Games, scheduled for London. London would serve as Olympic host in 1948, Helsinki in 1952, Melbourne in 1956 and Tokyo in 1964.
