In 1828, eight years before Michigan achieved statehood, Patrick Fitzpatrick, a Detroit native living in what is now Windsor, Ontario, was hung by Canadian authorities for raping and murdering the daughter of a local innkeeper. The evidence against Fitzpatrick was circumstantial, but the authorities were convinced they had the right man.

It wasn't until seven years afterward that Fitzpatrick's roommate, on his deathbed, confessed to the crime. Outraged Michiganders were committed to preventing wrongful executions in the future and on March 1, 1847, Michigan constitutionally abolished the death penalty.
