quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the Circus, whenever one accident happens, it is believed that ____ more will follow.

Answer: Two

For some strange reason, people used to (and some still do today) believe that accidents would always come in threes.
2. Doing what in the backstage dressing room is said to cause bad luck?

Answer: Whistling

People believed that whistling would cause an accident during the show, and, judging by the answer to number 1, there would be two more. So people thought it better to not whistle and avoid three accidents.
3. Which foot did people believe you should enter the ring with first, left or right?

Answer: Right

4. Here's a superstition for the circus audience: whenever a picture is taken of an elephant, should its trunk be up or down?

Answer: up

5. What is it that circus workers should NEVER do anywhere inside of the circus tent?

Answer: Sleep

Back when the circuses were held in tents with dirt floors, the workers believed that if they slept in the tent, the floor would collapse and they would be stuck falling forever.
6. Back on the track of question two: what should you never EAT inside of the dressing room?

Answer: Peanuts

Whoo boy! I'd hate to be caught whistling and eating peanuts in between tunes while I was in the dressing room! People believed that this would cause a double whammy! One accident (followed by two more) for whistling, and another three accidents for eating peanuts!
7. Once a performer's _____ has been set down backstage, it should never move until it was time to move to a new location?

Answer: Wardrobe trunk

If it was moved, the performer believed they would be fired soon.
8. Circus bands would play John Philip Sousa's version of the "Stars and Stripes Forever" in certain situations. What situations were these?

Answer: Emergency

When something bad was happening somewhere in the Big Top, the band would play John Philip Sousa's version as a warning to the performers that something was terribly wrong.
9. What type of feather would bring bad luck if brought under the Big Top?

Answer: Peacock Feather

If anyone brought a feather of a Peacock into the tent, terrible things were said to happen (a perfect time for Sousa's "Stars and Stripes Forever"!) I can just picture it now, a giant Peacock walking up, and eating the tent!
10. Finally! Something about good luck! If a performer wanted to be sure he/she would have good luck during a performance, he/she would keep the hair of a(n) _____'s tail in his/her pocket.

Answer: Elephant
