Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. For some reason I always get mixed up about the meaning of 'dilated' pupils. Does it mean they are getting bigger or smaller?

Answer: bigger

Pupils can dilate for a variety of reasons, including the person being interested or stimulated by a particular object they are looking at; some types of drugs; and the darkening of a room. Interestingly, research has shown that people tend to be more attracted to photgraphs of others with dilated pupils than those that are smaller or non-dilated.
2. Here's a classic English conundrum that I used to get mixed up all the time. Which of the following statements displays the correct use of the word 'principle'?

Answer: I agree with the principle of paying tax

The alternative word that should be used in the other sentences is 'principal'. An easy way to remember this is that 'principal' has many more meanings (including the fact that your headmaster is your 'pal', or the 'main' person). Principle, on the other hand, is essentially only used to describe a fundamental law, doctrine, or tenet, and can only be used as a noun.
3. Here's a bit of a geography dilemma. Which of the following is officially a county of England?

Answer: Isle of Wight

The Isle of Wight, located a few miles off the south coast of England, is officially a county (and its largest island). The Isle of Man, on the other hand, is a self-governing British Crown Dependency located in the Irish Sea. The Isle of Man runs its own population census, which revealed in 2006 there were approximately 80,000 residents.
4. Here's one for the Aussies. Which of the following is a main difference between kangaroos and wallabies?

Answer: Adult kangaroos are much bigger on average

Kangaroos and wallabies are both marsupials from the Macropod family. They have long, flat feet and live in similar habitats across Australia. The major difference between them is that the adult kangaroo can grow up to 8 feet tall and weigh 91 kg, while the adult wallaby is much smaller (only about 2 feet and 24 kg).
5. The religious sects the Quakers and the Shakers have always confused me due to their similar names. But which one came first?

Answer: quakers

The Quakers, originally known as the Religious Society of Friends, broke away from the Church of England in the mid 17th century. The Shakers, or United Society of Believers in Christ's Second Appearing, broke away from the Quaker movement in 1747 (and in fact, the first group of Quakers called themselves the "Shaking Quakers").
6. In astronomy, when I heard that Saturn had a moon named Titan, I naturally assumed it was the largest moon in the Solar System discovered to date. Was I correct?

Answer: No

Titan is the second largest moon behind Ganymede (a moon of Jupiter). Our moon is actually fifth on the list, behind these two and another two of Jupiter's, Callisto and Io.
7. Frogs and toads are very similar animals. Which of the following statements is true?

Answer: Frogs need to live near water

Toads and frogs are very similar animals, from the same group of animals called anurans. While there are some exceptions, frogs live near water but toads have adapted to land life and are able to survive without living near water. Toads have wider bodies and dry, bumpy skin.
8. I heard a rumor recently that flammable and inflammable mean exactly the same thing. Is this true?

Answer: Yes

It's confusing but true! Inflammable was the original adjective used to describe an object that can readily be set alight; it is thought that the word flammable was introduced to avoid the situation where people took the 'in' to mean 'not'. However both are used interchangably now! The opposite of both these words in 'non-flammable'.
9. Who was the first Emperor of the Roman Empire (rising to power in 27 BC)?

Answer: Augustus

Caesar Augustus, born in 63BC, reigned for an amazing 41 years. His leadership was thought to have contributed to an era of peace known as the "Pax Romana".
10. Which one of the following sentences is grammatically correct?

Answer: It's raining cats and dogs.

This is a very straight-forward rule. The apostrophe of ownership doesn't apply to the word "its", because that word with an apostrophe is a contraction of "it is".
